Omeprazole not really helping heartburn

So fed up. I'm 18 weeks and had heartburn/indigestion from 6 weeks on the dot. For me it isn't chest pain or anything but acid in my throat and constantly feeling food is coming back up my throat after I've eaten. I'm on 40mg omeprazole a day AND rennies and it helps with the acid but not the feeling of food coming back up and general feeling of yuck. It's driving me demented. I had it in my last pregnancy but not til the third trimester and it was treatable with Gaviscon. Everyone else says omeprazole sorted them right out, it hasn't me.

I survived on milkshake when I was pregnant!

I mean this doesn't exacerbate it but it doesn't help iyswim

I had dreadful morning sickness first trimester, I'm sure the vomiting made it worse

I can’t eat bananas- they give me awful indigestion - just in case you’ve been eating extra bananas. And sometimes pregnancy makes you unable to eat something that caused no problem before.

Jacobs cream crackers with milk used to mop some up

I'm an omeprazole veteran. What I found recently when I bought some nexium over the counter is that it works better for me. You could try one nexium in the evening and 20mg of omeprazole in the morning .Also Maalox beside the bed I have a dose when I go to bed. Maalox is very old fashioned but jeepers it works in minutes.

This is one thing I haven't tried! Thank you!

Don't try pepto bismol! It's not suitable for pregnant women.

I've been chugging gaviscon

Honestly at this point I would stick a nail through my tongue if I thought it would help

Sorry, I didn't read your OP properly. I'm not sure you should take it if you are pregnant.

Poppyislost · 03/03/2024 14:07

I'll ask my GP about alternatives.

I drank gasvicon out of the bottle, plus omprazole.

Plain Yogurt in the evening helped too

cabbageking · 03/03/2024 14:22

I can't handle milk, or fatty food like cheese, crackers, biscuits, spicy food or processed food even with omeprazole. For me the fat content of food over the day has a big effect. Have you reviewed your diet and also spoken to the doctor.

Yes to diet, certain things definitely make it worse

Yes to the doctor, who wasn't remotely interested...just part of pregnancy! Which in my case I expect is true as it came on right on 6 weeks on the dot along with all my other pregnancy symptoms.

I was prescribed ranitidine - worked the best for me,

catwithflowers · 03/03/2024 14:56

I think ranitidine has been withdrawn from sale (possible links with cancer?)

catwithflowers · 03/03/2024 14:58

Ranitidine is not currently available in the UK or globally. It has been discontinued as a precaution because it may contain a small amount of an impurity that has been linked to an increased risk of cancer in animals. It's not yet known whether it will be available again in future.

From the NHS website

Sleep propped up with a wedge pillow or some books under the end of your mattress

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 03/03/2024 15:13

I used magnesium trisilicate for heartburn when I was pregnant many moons ago. It was very cheap and quite effective. Not sure of it's still recommended.

Already do this, it doesn't really help tbh. I think I'm past that point!
