Post c section pain

I had my section at 11:30, it’s 8pm now and I’m in too much pain to lift myself up for them to change my sheets. I’m feeling really deflated that I’m meant to be able to move more. How did others find their first 12 hours?

Hmm there should be more meds at this stage. They should be giving you painkillers? Are the midwives helping?

Notmeagainn · 07/02/2024 20:17

I was rotating paracetamol and ibuprofen for the first couple of days. I didn’t stand up until the next morning either.

I wouldn’t worry to much try and stand up if you can though you will feel amazing! Enjoy that little baby too xxx

Bemyclementine · 07/02/2024 20:17

I was unable to move at all due to the spinal not wearing off for about 12 hours. I had mine at around 12noon and didn't get up til the next morning.

That said, you need to try and roll over rather than sit up, if you can. Ask fir pain relief.

londonmum1984 · 07/02/2024 20:19

You should be getting at least dihydrocodeine as standard, and you may be able to get oramorph.

I had c section 6 months ago - you need to keep buzzing and keep asking. The big thing with c section is to get ahead of the pain and take the painkillers on a tight schedule.

Also, ask for peppermint tea for the wind pain. It's bloody awful.

Hope you feel better soon, don't worry about asking for more.

34weekmess · 07/02/2024 20:20

Have they not given you/offered you any Oramorph ?

Hiddenvoice · 07/02/2024 20:22

Please don’t worry about moving more, so everything at a pace you feel comfortable with as to not cause yourself too much pain.
Keep buzzing for pain relief! I buzzed everytime I needed help feeding my baby as I needed support to sit up. Midwives were more than happy to help as they knew I’d have my dh helping at home.

UpUpUpU · 07/02/2024 20:24

You have just had major surgery so cut yourself some slack. Ask for stronger pain medication and don’t worry about asking the midwives for help

anotherdayanotherpathlesstravelled · 07/02/2024 20:29

I was up and on my feet as soon as the catheter was out but that's because my twins were very poorly on NICU and if I wanted to see them I had to get up so I think my momma bear adrenaline kicked in. I rotated paracetamol and ibruprofen that's it. This was my second c section and i would say getting up quicker helped me recover quicker than the first time when I didn't really move an awful much x

Missingmyusername · 07/02/2024 20:29

Hell on earth! A 1,000 sit ups rolled into one! There was no pain relief offered, I begged for some and was given Oramorph. But after having one dose I didn’t want another as it made me feel sick and dizzy and did nothing for the pain.

Paracetamol was pointless (for me) despite taking it regularly.

Keep buzzing and ask for some pain relief, I’d least try some, could work for you. The best thing was a hot water bottle, but I couldn’t have it until I was home.

The pain will subside after a few days, hang in there.

InTheRainOnATrain · 07/02/2024 20:30

What pain relief are you on? I had a rotation of dihydrocodeine and ibuprofen so was up and about pretty easily, plus oramorph at bedtime.

PoppingTomorrow · 07/02/2024 20:35

Yes ask for more pain relief. 12 hours is nothing. I felt considerably better after 24 hours, and again after 48, etc

ZEWatson · 07/02/2024 20:52

I had zero pain for over 24 hours. My spinal wore off after 6 hours and I was walking around. 24 hrs later I asked the Dr's if it's normal to have zero pain, they said it was probably because of the morphine injection given at time of delivery. I had mild pain for the following 6 days. And back to normal after about 14 days.
Hope you have a speedy recovery, accept all the meds

DinnaeFashYersel · 07/02/2024 20:55

I was in a lot of pain after both of my sections and needed morphine for days and codeine for weeks. You need to ask for more pain meds if you are in pain.

Not everyone bounces back as quickly as some on this thread so please don't feel pressure to be ok if you are not.

relentlessissue · 07/02/2024 20:58

I had oramorph for 4 days for both my sections. It is what it is

relentlessissue · 07/02/2024 20:59

I then had tramadol at home for about 4/6 weeks

tempnameforadvice · 07/02/2024 21:11

I had oramorph in hospital for 24 hours then was discharged with paracetamol.

That was it.

Ask for pain relief!!!

Yes this! I’m usually the first one to say I recovered quickly but that’s only because I was on the really good painkillers, taken on a precise schedule so I always stayed ahead of the pain (if that makes sense).

OP if you need stronger pain relief insist on getting it. Do you have partner with you that can advocate for you if you feeling like you’re not being listen or are too exhausted to make a fuss (understandable under the circumstances)? Yes you shouldn’t feel pressured to be fully back on it only 12 hours after major surgery but equally it’s not ok to be left in pain.

SnapdragonToadflax · 07/02/2024 21:31

Have you been staying on top of the pain? You need to take your paracetamol and ibuprofen on a strict schedule - write the hours you take them on the box. (Get someone to work out out for you, my brain could not have done that just after having a baby.) That way even if you sleep through a dose, you know which is next and you can judge whether to take one a bit late or hold out to the next.

I had oramorph for about four days after, and needed it. Had op at 9.30am and was walking by mid-afternoon, but it really fucking hurt and I barely moved until the next day. Everyone is different though, and if you feel you need more time that's fine. You do need to buzz and keep buzzing, don't be polite.

Copasetic · 07/02/2024 21:35

I found the first few days in hospital ridiculously hard. The nurses never had time to help, I couldn't move, my baby kept bringing mucus up all over himself/herself (both c-sections). Once I got home it got a whole lot better. You just need to get through the first few days, take any pain killers you can, sleep when you can, take any help. My youngest is 13 and my eldest 29. It all goes too quick!

redxlondon · 07/02/2024 21:47

Sorry if it wasn’t clear - they’re saying I’ve maxed out pain relief. I’ve had a 12 hour slow release morphine, di-something, paracetamol and neurofen. It was quite an intense section as they had trouble getting my double uterus back in, and he was a big breach baby. It just seems odd /
wrong to still be in pain.

Sosocold · 07/02/2024 21:49

100% take it easy and ask for more pain relief. I was on oramorph for a few days and codeine for several weeks. This is major surgery. Congratulations on baby xx

Jesus. I was at the wrong hospital. I was given ONE on day 2 after I got cross. I was in agony because I’d had to walk back and forth to NICU that day. They wouldn’t give me any on day 3! I’m allergic to opiates so had to manage the rest on paracetamol and ibuprofen.

ZEWatson · 07/02/2024 21:56

I was only offered paracetamol and ibuprofen and didn't go home with anything! Crazy. Thankfully I had minimal pain, but wouldn't have minded something a little stronger

BurbageBrook · 07/02/2024 22:08

I was still on Oramorph at this point and hadn't had my catheter out. You need to be on more painkillers, you've just been sliced into!

Chanhedforthis · 07/02/2024 22:11

Be kind to yourself op you've just had major surgery.

Relax and keep asking for pain relief so they don't forget.
