Breathless early pregnancy 🤰

Does anyone experience breathless in early pregnancy? I understand it’s very common in late pregnancy. However I’m only 8+ weeks and I’ve been feeling like I need to catch my breath recently. Is this a normal thing?? 🤔🤔

Yes. I’ve had this since about 4 weeks. I was surprised too because I thought it was only later on when everything was squashed, but apparently it’s normal before then too!

Rosiiee · 05/02/2024 20:28

Are you taking progesterone by any chance? I was taking injections along with pessaries and I was struggling so much with breathlessness to the point where GP sent me to hospital! They thought I might have a blood clot in my lungs but thankfully it was all clear. They suggested I stop the progesterone and everything went back to normal once I did.

Alwaystired2023 · 05/02/2024 20:29

Yes both pregnancies breathless from day 1 (or week 3 iyswim)

If it's true, being pregnant is metabolically the same as running a marathon every day, so I assume that's why!

Kayleyanniex · 05/02/2024 20:31

@Rosiiee well I did Google progesterone and it did say it can cause it, but I just can’t help to worry it would be something worse as you don’t hear about early pregnancy can cause being breathless! Thank you for your reply

@Pumpkindoodles thank you for your reply! This make me feel abit better, everybody I have asked at work say they have never experienced being breathless this early only when being later on! I get breathless just getting out of bed, it’s quite worrying but I suppose it’s my body trying to adapt hopefully! X

@Alwaystired2023 thanks for the reply! It’s very annoying isn’t it! I have only been experiencing this for the past 2 weeks. I feel though I get even more breathless when I had a meal, it’s worrying but I hope it’s just my body changing xx

I think it's all reasonable, and between pregnancies I went back to normal (unfit but certainly not breathless from going up 3 stairs 🤣)

If you are worried OP do mention to your midwife though x

Kayleyanniex · 05/02/2024 20:39

That’s good to hear 😂 I’m still waiting to see my midwife so hopefully she will be in touch soon for my first appointment x

Yes but I was anaemic. Easily sorted. With iron tablets though

gamerchick · 05/02/2024 20:40

Get your iron levels checked.

Kayleyanniex · 05/02/2024 20:42

I have recently had blood tests and it’s clear x

It’s actually very common in very early pregnancy because of the progesterone boost! Don’t worry at all, should just pass. If you’re worrying then always good to chat with your midwife but it’s a common early symptom! Ignore the wheezer chat 🙄

Couggstar123 · 05/02/2024 20:47

Literally google ‘ shortness of breathe first trimester’ and it will explain it! 🤍

Kayleyanniex · 05/02/2024 20:52

@Couggstar123 thank you for the reassurance! I’m hoping it will pass, just feels like it never will at the moment 😂 even when I’m lying down in bed, I’m still feeling breathless, maybe it’s just worse because I’m thinking it xx

Couggstar123 · 05/02/2024 20:55

I had it with my first pregnancy from very early on but didn’t really notice it with this one. Maybe cos I felt so awful I barely moved from the sofa haha! Try and not worry but if you are stressing defo mention it to your midwife, they are good for reassurance!

ArchetypalBusyMum · 05/02/2024 20:56

Yes, very normal. I was the same from 5 weeks. I was training for a marathon so pretty fit at the time.
I went from running several miles and not being out of puff to not even being able to get to the top of the stairs without stopping to get my breath... In the space of 24 hrs! 🤣

Kayleyanniex · 05/02/2024 21:00

Thank you! Yeah I’m just waiting to see my midwife, they have told me it can be between 8-10 weeks for my first appointment. X@Couggstar123

Yes - all bloods etc came back clear. Midwife couldn’t prescribe anything so she contacted a dr on my behalf who prescribed a brown inhaler. Breathlessness was almost non existent after getting my inhaler.

Kayleyanniex · 05/02/2024 21:02

Hi, thank you this makes me feel better 😂 yeah it definitely makes you feel like a different person! I’m glad other people have been experiencing this x

Im currently in hospital with this at 9 weeks. Felt increasingly short of breath over the past week, GP sent me to the hospital as was concerned about blood clot and my heart rate is very high even at rest, and shoots up on exertion. Not sure what they are going to do about it as not seen a consultant yet but do get checked out if you’re worried.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 06/02/2024 06:59

Yes, happened to me in more than one pregnancy. I did see a doctor about it and was told it was the progesterone surge in early pregnancy.

It did go away. Probably around 3/4 months, I think. It was a while ago.it felt quite different to end of pregnancy breathlessness.

Oxalis00 · 06/02/2024 13:35

I have this, and have had since very early on, only 6 weeks or so. I teach and I can hear myself sounding out of breath when talking to a class, and quite often have to sit down to teach now. They must think I’m so unfit! I didn’t realise it was a progesterone thing, thanks PP, as I’m on the pessaries.

Kayleyanniex · 06/02/2024 21:37

Hi, sorry to hear you’re in hospital. Hopefully they will get to the bottom of it and it’s nothing serious. Yes I will definitely get it checked if it continues. Unfortunately I don’t have a very good gp practice, they don’t appear to take symptoms seriously which can be worrying @MrsMoggy

Hi! Thanks for the reply. Yes I get breathless when I’m talking. It can be quite worrying at times as you think somethings not right! I’m glad I’m not the only one experiencing this@Oxalis00
