Cervical ectropian - help reassure me through a long night wait

Hello kind people of Mumsnet. I am 12 weeks with my first. Had some minor spotting on and off. Today I mentioned the spotting at an appointment for something else and GP did a vaginal exam. She confirmed I had a small cervical ectropian that was lightly bleeding and that my cervix was high and closed. So far, so reassured. I was low level worried most of the day. Fast forward to tonight and I had a - sorry for TMI - rather explosive poop and then a fair amount of blood with some small clots when I wiped. I have rung the triage and they said EPU will call me tomorrow morning and probably get me in for a scan. I guess if I had a question it would be - how much blood can an ectropian cause? The amount I had was less than a teaspoon, but it was bright with little dark clots. It's stopped now - just little streaks as I wipe. I was meant to be having my 12 week scan today but my husband is away for work so we delayed it to next week. I know there's nothing I can do at this point but I am alone and scared so reaching out to internet strangers seemed like something to do.

Hello, I had this at 17 weeks with pregnancy 1. There was bright red spots when wiping, but a lot of blood when I then went in to be examined and they said it was cervical erosion. I ended up staying in overnight. After that it didn't happen again and baby is fine. I didn't have it at all in pregnancy 2.
Sending wishes your way as I know it can be very scary.

itsmschanandlerbong · 29/01/2024 22:52

I had one, diagnosed at 11 weeks following some spotting and a flood, and bled again at 14 weeks and touch wood nothing since. I am now 21 weeks and can feel baby kicking away. I know it's really difficult but try not to panic, my bet is it's caused by the extropian.

Orlahoping · 29/01/2024 22:55

Thank you both so much for the reassurance. Trying to remain hopeful. I don't have any pain or anything so just willing that I have a scan tomorrow that confirms baby is ok. The volume of blood is small, but a lot more than I have had in the pregnancy so far.

I had a cervical ectropion at around 30 weeks. I remember being very scared at the time. There was talk of various injections that I might need if it happened again and baby was born prematurely.
It never did happen again and I was actually a week overdue. I had a good birth experience, apart from screeching at my DH for yawning whilst I was in labour!
I know the stage it happened to me at is different to yours, but I just wanted you to know that it can be okay. Best of luck to you x

Orlahoping · 29/01/2024 23:05

Thank you. Laughing at the thought of my DH yawning while I am in labour now!

I had one diagnosed before pregnancy but bled throughout the first six weeks - small bleeds. Had to wait for the heartbeat but all was ok. I remember thinking I would lose her, but all was OK and 15 years later she’s a mini version of me with attitude to boot.

Good luck OP. Always seek medical advice and looking at the replies it seems lots of us have been in a similar boat and all ok.

What counts as a small bleed? I just had a small flood enough to cover maybe 4 inches on a pad. Urgh this is terrifying.

I have cervical ectropian, in my first pregnancy I bled after intercourse, and it was enough to seriously freak me out, chances are that the doctor today having a look at it probably irritated it and caused the bleed. I was advised by the consultant to abstain from sex until 20 weeks, and then that continued but due to other issues not related. In my second pregnancy I was already aware of it, so had less of an issue.

Just waiting for EPU to call now. Not sure how long that will take or if they will get me in today. Bleeding has slowed from last night. Just holding out hope that cervical ectropion can cause this volume of blood. Sorry for TMI - worst first from last night and then this morning. Still no pain.

Well EPU won't see me till Thursday so I have booked a scan for this afternoon. Fingers crossed 🤞

Good luck, op. It may be that the vaginal exam has irritated things.

scrunchmum · 30/01/2024 09:25

I had more blood than that, after my examination.
If they already checked and cervix was closed then it should just be from the erosion. Hand hold, and hoping the scan is ok for you Flowers

Thank you so much. I just have no feel for what a "normal" level of bleeding is, so this helps. Obviously no bleeding would be the preference! I will update here after the scan

@Orlahoping I had numerous ones where I’d wipe and it was pink or blood in the knickers not enough to fill a pad but there. This was lots of times. On and off. I had it a bit later in the pregnancy at about 4 months so went home from work to rest in bed that day. Just make sure you speak to your midwife / medical team. I was living abroad at the time and hadn’t got the same support as the UK. Thinking of you OP I know how worrying it can be. We are here for you.

Ironingpile · 30/01/2024 09:48

@Orlahoping Just seen your update on the scan. Good luck OP.

Likemyjealouseel · 30/01/2024 09:50

I had an etropicon and bled for 10 weeks from 10 w pregnant. The amount of blood and the size of the clots was insane — much bigger than the size of the fetus at that point. But the baby was fine (and is now 5).
I had a huge bleed with it postpartum and after lochia too, so be prepared for that! But since then nothing.

Likemyjealouseel · 30/01/2024 09:51

(I had much much more bleeding than in your photos)

I had a big bleed that went on for about 5 days at 6/7 weeks. Already knew I had an ectropion from pre-pregnancy but was still absolutely terrifying at the time. It was a lot of fresh red blood initially that became brown blood for the last 2ish days. No sign of blood in the uterus on 2 scans (one while actively bleeding) so it was decided it must be the ectropion and I'm currently feeding 2 week old DD.

Hope your scan goes well 🤞

sleepymouseles · 30/01/2024 11:41

Fingers are crossed for you.

I had a cervical erosion with both my pregnancies; but with my first I also had a subchronic haemotoma too. I am unsure on that spelling sorry.

But I basically had a small pocket of blood that would release now and again; it was so so scary!

Both pregnancies I had blood and the anxiety was very intense.

Good luck for this afternoon.

Unfortunately it was not good news. Baby stopped growing at 9 weeks. Wasn't expecting it at all.

So sorry to hear that, not much I can say but sending hugs Flowers

paulhollywoodshairgel · 30/01/2024 18:17

Hi I had a Massive one. I had it cauterised at 20 weeks. It all went fine and DD is now 13. I remember the cons saying 'I will be this far from the baby (made a hand gesture) in anatomical terms that's about 3 miles!'

Thank you. On the plus (ish?) side I now know that this bleed was different to the other cervical ectropion bleeds for a reason! It sucks though
