I am reaching out as a new mother seeking guidance on the best brands for baby essentials.

  1. What is the best body wash + shampoo for babies?
  2. Could you recommend a safe and gentle perfume for babies?
  3. In your experience, which type of diapers has proven to be the most reliable?
  4. Are there specific brands of wipes that you found to be effective and gentle?
  5. What diaper cream do you consider the best for preventing and soothing diaper rash?

Additionally, I would love to hear any other tips you have for preparing for a new baby.

Thank you in advance for your time and advice.

Please explain #2 a little...

catsnore · 28/01/2024 16:20

In my limited experience:

  1. Aveeno
  2. No idea what you mean. Babies smell delicious and have no need of perfume.
  3. I use eco friendly ones - Naty or Beaming Baby. Consider washable nappies.
  4. Again get biodegradable ones that wont hang around for thousands of years. Most supermarkets do them or there is a brand called Water Wipes. Also consider washable wipes like Cheeky Wipes that are actually really effective to use and much cheaper than buying disposables.
  5. Metanium cream

  1. baby dove or Johnson’s - I’m sure plenty will be on to tell u babies don’t need soap blah blah but tbh I think they do lol they can be wee stinkers !
  2. never head of baby perfume
  3. Amazon mama bear sensitive wipes are the absolute best !
  4. I’ve not used cream to prevent just change my babies often: if they get red or rashes I use sudocrem !

You say diapers so maybe aren't in the uk may get irrelevant answers?

I have a 3 month old so can share what we use.
What is the best body wash + shampoo for babies? Child's farm
• Could you recommend a safe and gentle perfume for babies? Eh??? No. Seems all kind of wrong.
• In your experience, which type of diapers has proven to be the most reliable? Pampers
• Are there specific brands of wipes that you found to be effective and gentle? Water wipes as used them with elder dd when they were the only kind like that, but there must be more similar brands now.
• What diaper cream do you consider the best for preventing and soothing diaper rash?
Metanium yellow one to soothe. Sticks to your hands.

Thank you all for your answers, this helped me a lot. I live in London, but I'm not British 😆

I've always used Johnson's then aveeno and as older they've used simple body wash
Nappies I tried a variety as all babies differ. My son was Asda little angels and Amazons mama bear at night, but my daughter was any brand. Always used any brand wipes which have been fine. I love that Amazon mama bear do them in bulk though! sudocrem no complaints

Lijay · 28/01/2024 19:52

I'm sure op means a perfume for herself that's gentle for baby. Not actually a perfume for the baby guys 😂

  1. child's farm or Johnson's

  2. I didnt wear any for months. Then just used my usual. But day to day I still don't wear it.

  3. pampers baby dry

  4. any. Go with whatevers on offer

  5. sudocrem

Imenti · 28/01/2024 20:12

If you mean perfume for yourself to wear, I just wear my normal perfume and spray it on my lower legs 🤣🤣 still get a nice waft and baby unlikely to get down there so won't smell of perfume lol.xx

scrunchmum · 28/01/2024 20:20

Washable wipes (cheeky wipes or similar) are so much more effective and cheaper than disposable wipes

Suchardchoccy · 28/01/2024 20:25

Congratulations!

Diapers = American
Nappies = British

This is what I use:

Aldi shampoo, Asda body wash and body lotion

Idk what baby perfume is

Aldi nappies are amazing

Sudocrem only if your baby has a red bum

I have also used the branded products and find them exactly the same for a fraction of the price

Suchardchoccy · 28/01/2024 20:27

Oh and Aldi wipes!

tealandteal · 28/01/2024 20:36

I used child’s farm bubble bath with both mine as there is eczema in the family. They also do shampoo. I used water wipes when they were very little and then swapped to washable/reusable wipes. Use Tesco nappies and for my youngest pampers night time nappies at night as he wet through everything else. I use sudocreme if they have nappy rash.

I assume the perfume is for you and not the baby? I kept the same but just didn’t spray in my neck.

theprincessthepea · 29/01/2024 00:14

I agree with everything above. I have a selection of the creams.

Aveeno
Ive heard Aldi nappies are great
sudocream for butt and rashes
Also I always had a cradle cap shampoo for when it crept up

The only baby perfume I saw was on social media - Dior apparently releasing a scent for babies. I want to say that is completely unnecessary and bonkers as you don’t need to think about perfume until your lo starts producing BO as a teen (and that is when I introduced perfume on clothes for my eldest!).

Aquamarine1029 · 29/01/2024 00:22

Perfume for a baby? Don't be ridiculous. Totally unnecessary and potentially harmful.

Thankyouthankyoujellybean · 29/01/2024 04:15

@tealandteal ok, that makes sense, I thought it was for the baby for some reason 😂

I blame my pregnancy brain...

GreatGateauxsby · 29/01/2024 04:31
  1. Child's farm initially but I didn't love it...we switched to QA body wash (it's ph balanced and less drying)
  1. Any perfume you like as long as you aren't going crazy. One spritz in your hair Vs 3/4 on yourself is enough. None for baby 😅
3.Pampers are good but £££ we use pampers and Aldi nappies which are also are great
  1. Sudocreme and a tube of metanium (heavy duty and used only for extreme rashes -ie when they have diarrhea or are teething)
olderthanyouthink · 29/01/2024 05:13

Water/aveeno
None, why would you?
Cloth nappies, all the disposables leaked poo
Cloth wipes and water
Rarely got nappy rash but sudocreme mostly sorted it but yellow metanium is well loved by many too.

MariaVT65 · 29/01/2024 05:34

-Child’s farm baby wsh and shampoo. If they have a cold, Asda little angels vapour bath is also nice.

-I’m hoping you mean perfume for you, but honestly I just stopped wearing it.

-We use pampers when they are young, but tbh ae’ve found as the baby grows, some brands fit better than others so you need to change brands sometimes. We also used Aldi for a while then the size 5s leaked. Our nursery uses Asda. We still always use Pampers at night.

-Most wipes are fine tbh. Though i don’t like water wipes and mama bear because they are actually too wet for my liking and it’s good to leave the baby’s skin dry

-Sudocrem! But only put cream on if they baby is sore.

Caspianberg · 29/01/2024 05:54

Weleda brand for shampoo,
/wash , and nappy cream.

washable nappies - tots bots

washable wipes - cheeky wipes

I think all disposable wipes are awful. The only time Ds ever got a nappy wash was when we travelled and use disposable wipes and some disposable nappies. Luckily we took a few washable nappies also so just stopped all disposable after about 5 days, and bought some flannels in supermarket as hadn’t taken cheeky wipes. Rash disappeared within a day of ditching disposable again

Ladyj84 · 29/01/2024 06:37

In our experience 4 children 3 are toddlers the Tesco Fred&Flo range have worked for them all. The baby wash is lovely, there nappies were the first to not leak for us. For nappy rash sudo crem worked the best and quickest. Cow&gate milk caused bad stomach problems with our tins so we went to SMA and had no problems after.

sexnotgenders · 29/01/2024 06:47

Just on the perfume, I'd probably recommend you stop wearing any at least for the first few months. Your baby knows your smell, and will get enormous comfort from it, so you wouldn't want anything that masks that. I always found I smell much stronger in the months immediately after I've given birth, not a bad smell, just a stronger natural scent, and that's natures way of boosting your bond with your baby.

On your other questions, I only ever use water for the first few months. Babies don't get dirty and they smell amazing, so I don't think products are necessary. After that, Aveeno is very gentle. Nappies are very individual to baby, so I'd try a few brands when baby is here. On wipes, whenever I'm at home for a nappy change, I always use plain water on a cotton pad - it's much more gentle on their little bums.

Suchardchoccy · 29/01/2024 09:34

Yes I agree with other pps, maybe just don't wear perfume for a while.

I also think that the first week or two of life you don't need to bath them and certainly don't need to use products on them. They may be born with some vernix still on their skin and that's very moisturising for them.

Also like a previous pp said, cradle cap shampoo if you need it! I've had to use it for both my DDs (2 and 1) and I'm now pregnant with my third

cbbo · 29/01/2024 13:39

Supermarket (Tesco/sainsburys) brand nappies are great. Pampers cost a bloody fortune!!!

Caspianberg · 29/01/2024 15:35

@scrunchmum - yes I saw! Have our in the loft in immaculate condition still. They can still be ordered new or secondhand on random websites also. Easyfits were my favourite
