I thought I was going through peri menopause or menopause but I'm 11 days late and I feel pregnant. Very sore breasts. Absolutely knackered. Feel sick.

I have 2 kids who are nearly secondary school age. Im scared about :

Peoples reactions - family, work
Work
My age
Miscarrying

Basically everything. Husband has gone to get a test. I can't say anything to anyone so I'm putting it here hoping for reassurance and support. Brew

Matildahoney · 21/01/2024 18:27

Congratulations OP. I've just had my first at 41. We're not quite a month in, but so far we're all doing ok.
It puts you at higher risk for Downs Syndrome, the NHS test will automatically put you at high risk (which they don't tell you so can come as a shock!) because of your are, so worth paying (if you can afford it) for the nipt straight out to save the stress, higher risk of gestational diabetes & also growth scans at 34 & 38 weeks, but other than that my pregnancy was straightforward.
Hope all goes well for you

FrancisSeaton · 21/01/2024 18:28

Tiredpregnantlady · 21/01/2024 18:50

Congratulations!! I'm a few years older than you - 46 (with a teenager) and 6 months pregnant! All scans fine/healthy so far and a fairly normal pregnancy. I've had 2 'negative/off'reactions....both from people I'm not particularly close to. I was a little annoyed/upset at the time but now I don't give a stuff what they think and I can't believe they were actually rude enough to comment to my face. Everyone else (whose opinion I do care about) has been delighted/excited. Enjoy your pregnancy and good luck x

ElleLeopine · 21/01/2024 18:54

I fell pregnant with my second around my 40th birthday. There is an 11 year age gap between my two, they are now 14 and 25, and the best of friends. You will be absolutely fine!

Many congratulations!

OhForGoodnessSake1 · 21/01/2024 18:55

Exactly the same age as my mother when she discovered she was expecting me despite thinking the 7 and 8 yos were enough :). My best friend was another "late accident" with siblings 9 and 11 years older: we both seem to have done OK despite the higher risks of Downs, etc. Good luck :)

EKGEMS · 21/01/2024 18:58

Wonderful news! Congrats for the future and may you have good health and peace

40andprettybored · 21/01/2024 19:05

Thank you all. It's nice being able to share it when I can't share it anywhere else. People are going to be flabbergasted - I can't imagine my mum and dad's faces!

Aw this is a lovely post to read, congratulations!!

gernsitu · 21/01/2024 19:12

Congratulations OP.

Not to cause anxiety but obviously miscarriages and genetic issues are a higher risk at this age - I got pg at 41 and had to have a TFMR at 14 weeks after an NIPT. Never had a miscarriage but plenty of friends have around this age. I did get pg again at 41 and had a healthy baby aged 42 (all fine except the gestational diabetes, which was also a higher risk due to age, despite having normal bmi).

greasypolemonkeyman · 21/01/2024 19:13

What a lovely update ❤️

Usernamen · 21/01/2024 19:16

41 is not that old at all! Virtually every woman I work with who is a mother had her baby very late 30s or early 40s.

Also, there’s been a recent spate of celebrity births to older mums (Victoria Coren Mitchell, Tana Ramsay, Emma Kenny, Hilary Swank, Laura Linney, Janet Jackson, Halle Berry, Kelly Preston) so pregnancy into late 40s, early 50s is becoming more normalised.

Anyway, congratulations!

12gum · 21/01/2024 19:17

Congratulations!!

iloveburmese3 · 21/01/2024 19:20

So exciting! And inspiring - I am 41 this year and wondering about having a 3rd baby... my oldest is 2.5 and youngest is 9 months... I am so happy I waited to have kids as any younger I would have felt I was missing out on careers... fun nights out... travelling... but now I'm happy with early nights and cosy weekends playing with toys and reading books (when not being bullied for cartoons!!!) congratulations xxxx

Moier · 21/01/2024 19:21
