So I was at the pharmacy to collect my prescription. The lady at the counter asked what my exemption is. I said maternity. Then she said , "I didn't want to assume in case you had a big dinner!" I knew she was joking but i sarcastically responded with' "Urgh, Thanks". I was a bit offended, no one has ever said that to me before. I know I'm big, but c'mon! It was a little insensitive of her. AITA?

OP posts:

It was a joke..she was being friendly..honestly no one dare say anything anymore for fear of giving offence.

Josette77 · 19/01/2024 00:52

I don't think she said anything offensive? You did just have a baby.

spackleplumb · 19/01/2024 00:52

I was confused why you'd need an exemption for a prescription since we don't charge for them here but presumably you live somewhere you need to pay for each one. I think she was probably just being lighthearted and spoke before she could stop herself. I would try not to take it to heart but if I'm honest I'd have felt the same as you back when I was pregnant. Does sound more like small talk than rudeness though.

amispeakingintongues · 19/01/2024 00:59

It wasn't a jibe at your size. It's just a jokey thing people say to make an awkward situation comical - ie. You probably have quite a noticeable undeniable pregnancy bump, yet still it's not safe for her or anyone to assume pregnancy in case that isn't the case...as that is a sure way to offend!

So when you confirmed pregnancy, which i'm sure she was certain of herself, that's her cue to make light of the painstakingly obvious fact that you are indeed pregnant.

lolalo4 · 19/01/2024 01:09

Don’t really understand why you were offended

WandaWonder · 19/01/2024 01:50

Please don't blame hormones but it was a joke

Meadowfinch · 19/01/2024 02:17

That sounds light hearted to me. Clearly no offence intended.

Basilthymerosemary · 19/01/2024 03:02

Easily offended much? It was a joke as she is correct and can't just assume

LauderSyme · 19/01/2024 03:07

Yes, you are being a little bit of an arsehole. She was making a light-hearted comment to explain her question, not being rude. Believe me it's much ruder to assume someone is pregnant when they're not!

BayCityCoaster · 19/01/2024 03:18

But you are pregnant - what would be rude, would be assuming you’re pregnant, commenting on it, and you’re not!

I mean, you can’t be mad if - while pregnant - you look pregnant?

LizzeyBenett · 19/01/2024 05:26

She was explaining why she asked the question and was trying to lighten the mood why would you choose to be rude to someone who was trying not to offend you , I think k in this situation you were the rude one not the lady in the pharmacy.

PickledScrump · 19/01/2024 07:52

You didn’t say anything that makes you an asshole, but you definitely seem very over sensitive. You’d be far more offended if you were someone not pregnant who suffers bad with bloating and she assumed you were pregnant, it’s always safer for them to ask, she was just making a joke.

You do in England

LauderSyme · 19/01/2024 09:53

@PickledScrump I called OP an arsehole because she asked at the end of her post AITA? which is from Reddit's "Am I The Asshole?", similar to AIBU?

I promise I am rarely gratuitously derogatory like that!

OP you're being a bit oversensitive, but meh. She was trying to be lighthearted and failed.

spicedlemonpie · 19/01/2024 10:33

Oh fgs it was a joke to many people get offended over silly things or try to find offence in anything get a grip lighten up.
I shaved my head bald once for my own reasons a few weeks later it grew to a number 3 i went to get the train with my sister as i went to get my ticket the man at the desk said YES SIR HOW CAN I HELP.
He knew in a second what he said before he could say anything i burst into laughing.
He apologised but we was cracking up i said no worries we dont find offence in everything.

Still laugh about it now.
My hair has grown back since then.

And the time a random woman on a bus said oh when are you due and looked at my belly I BLOAT me being me said im only 4 months she gave me her seat.
I played it off very well.
Happened a few times tbh.
Too much sadness going on in the world to be offended with silly things.
I kid you not when i bloat i look pregnant.

PickledScrump · 19/01/2024 11:48

@LauderSyme I’m not sure why you’ve tagged me. I’m aware what AITA means which is why I said that she was not one. I haven’t even read your comment 😂

DappledThings · 19/01/2024 11:54

She wasn't rude at all. Ruder to use Reddit terminology outside Reddit than the friendly comment made to you.

RuthW · 19/01/2024 12:20

You can not assume a woman is pregnant unless you can see the baby coming

LemonLight · 19/01/2024 12:37

Not really sure what was offensive about what she said. She was being friendly

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/01/2024 12:39

Don’t really see the problem. I’ve mistakenly assumed someone was pregnant before, which was pretty awful. Am very, very careful now.

Allthatglittersisntart · 19/01/2024 12:41

Yabu. I think it’s funny when people are afraid fo ask and she was obviously being friendly . But being unreasonable offended excusable due to pregnancy hormones and turmoil!

Allthatglittersisntart · 19/01/2024 12:42

Just to add, my vegan friend(in a very non vegan friendly country) who ate dates and soya protein a lot was frequently asked if she was pregnant due to massive bloating!

Oh dear, I was clearly being super defensive unnecessarily 😳 Apologies.
