Has anyone been tested positive to Parvovirus / Slapped cheek during early pregnancy?

I have tested positive to parvovirus/slapped cheek. Don’t know where I got, but I must have caught it when I was 13 weeks. I will be 15 weeks tomorrow. Hospital wants to monitor me on weekly basis for next 3 months, but not much they can do until around 18 weeks in case baby develops anemia or hydrops.
did anyone go through this already? I am petrified, as had two miscarriages in 2023 :(

@Ingridika how are you getting on?

I've got a blood test tomorrow as my son has slapped cheek syndrome so might be in the same situation.

What does the monitoring involve?

Thanks so much
Jas

Hey!
how are you getting on? Did you get your results?
as for me, I am having no-weekly scans in the hospital to monitor if baby catches the virus and develops anemia.

Hi!

Still waiting for blood results 🤦‍♀️

They're not scanning you??! I'm amazed!
Hope everything carries on being ok

i did but 18+ years ago, weekly scans for 3 months to monitor baby all was absolutely fine.

Ingridika · 30/01/2024 15:33

Omg, that is long!
it was meant to say no-weekly scans… 🙈 my next one is on Monday, 5th Feb.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Glad that everything was fine. The baby did not get infected?

Hello,

How are things now for you? I'm a primary school teacher 19 weeks pregnant. Children in my class have come down with slap cheek last week. I've been tested and have no antibodies therefore at risk. Feeling ok in myself so far.

I had a miscarriage in September so I know the anxious feeling.

Rainbowbaby2324 · 06/03/2024 19:22

@Ingridika did everything end up ok? I have tested positive and I may have got it when I was 18/19 weeks. I’ve had to move my 20 week scan until next week as I could be infectious. Hope everything worked out ok!! I’m so worried.

Rainbowbaby2324 · 08/03/2024 11:27

@mms2023 did you end up with slapped cheek or were you ok?

Nearly 2 weeks since being exposed. So far I've been feeling ok and no symptoms. I have to have blood tests every 2 weeks to see if I did contract the virus as some adults never get symptoms.
My 20 weeks scan on Monday evening so get to see if baby is all okay too☺️.

Rainbowbaby2324 · 09/03/2024 07:38

Aw I’m so glad you are feeling well. I did get some cold symptoms for nearly a week after being exposed 🥲 however, feeling much better now. I have my 20 week scan on Tuesday too as it had to be postponed after getting infected. Fingers crossed everything goes okay for us both ❤️ thank you for replying xx

I am currently 14 weeks pregnant. Noticed my son had red cheeks yesterday. Today he has woken up with a rash across his stomach and back. Just spoke to my midwife and she wants me in for bloods tomorrow.

At 12 weeks I got referred to John Radcliffe due to my babies NT levels being high. It's just one thing after another at the moment. 😞

Rainbowbaby2324 · 18/03/2024 14:01

@primrose1234 hope you are doing OK and feeling fine so far. It can be so worrying and the wait can feel so long but hopefully you have been exposed to it before and are immune.

primrose1234 · 18/03/2024 14:12

My blood results came back to say I have had Parvovirus previously (not recent) so myself and the baby are immune to it. One less thing to worry about

mms2023 · 01/04/2024 09:40

@Rainbowbaby2324
@Ingridika

How have you both got on. I'm now 23 weeks+ and got a phonecall yesterday to say that it's now showing in my bloods that I have been exposed to it. Had a cold last week and odd little broken rash dots.

20 weeks scan was all good, baby is definitely moving well.

How are they monitoring you?x

Rainbowbaby2324 · 01/04/2024 11:36

Hi @mms2023 I have been getting scanned every week to check baby’s health. I go again tomorrow and I won’t be signed off from fetal medicine until I’m 30 weeks. Currently 24 weeks now. Everything has been going well so far and it is lovely getting to see them every week. Have you informed maternity that you have been exposed to it? I had to phone them after my gp gave me my results and they referred me to fetal medicine straight away.

Hope you are OK. I was so worried when I got my results but everything is going well so far and hopefully that will be the same for you.

GBoxall · 27/05/2024 20:59

I caught parvovirus at 10 weeks teaching in Nursery - I completely feel for you all because there just doesn’t seem to be any quick answers & the waiting does feel horrible. I’ve been scanned weekly by the Fetal Medicine team since turning 16 weeks (the team caring for us waited 5-6 weeks after exposure as they said anaemia would be unlikely to develop before this point). I am 20 weeks this Thursday & they expect to continue monitoring until mid-June (for 12 weeks following the positive blood test). I really hope you are all ok- it is a stressful time. X

Hi all 😊
Really anxious. I’m 4weeks and 5 days pregnant and work in healthcare. A colleague was diagnosed with slapped cheek just over a week ago so my GP advised a blood test to check whether I had been infected - I knew I was susceptible. I had a call yesterday to say the result is positive for Parovirus B19 and I’ve been told that someone from fetal medicine will contact me. I’m so scared. I’m 41 and this is our miracle baby. I’ve already had 2 miscarriage in less than a year and we were about to start IVF with egg donation when I found out I was pregnant. Has anyone out there been in a similar situation ie. positive for parvovirus B19 at around 4 weeks pregnant. I’d love to know how it was managed and if everything turned out ok. So scared! Don’t know where to turn. 😟

Mimes83 · 31/05/2024 13:47

Thanks so much for your messages - makes me feel better just knowing that I’m not the only one going through this. I’m so pleased that your pregnancies are progressing well so far. Very reassuring. Keeping everything crossed for us all 😊

YourFastPinkHelper · 05/07/2024 14:19

Hi everyone I'm currently 20week +5days and have to go for a scan as I was exposed to parvo virus/slap cheek so it's to check for baby having anemia I'm so frightened I had a scan Wednesday because of concerns bit everything was absolutely fine but now I have this worry 😟 😰

GBoxall · 06/07/2024 08:33

Slapped cheek seems to be particularly prevalent this year. I believe if you’re past 20 weeks & catch it, the risk of baby developing anemia & subsequent hydrops is much, much lower than catching it before 20 weeks.

I caught it at 10 weeks- was scanned weekly from 16-22 weeks (all was okay thankfully) & have scans booked for 32, 36 and 39 weeks to ensure everything is okay. I’m currently 25 weeks.

I really do feel for you as it is such a stressful time, but the consultant did say that around 70% of adults have immunity from having slapped cheek as a child. Have you had a blood test to check for it? It takes around 2 or so weeks to come back, but that will be able to tell you whether you currently have it, have had it recently or had it a long time ago. Once you have that information, the midwife/hospital will be able to make a plan moving forward, so it may be worth contacting your midwife/doctors to explain your exposure to it. I really do feel for you, because it isn’t a nice position to be in ♥️

YourFastPinkHelper · 06/07/2024 10:15

I had it before 20weeks the midwife knew but only did a test Thursday and I got the results Friday in which I have to go for a scan on Wednesday to check the blood flow from baby's brain,is that to check for anemia in baby? I'm frightened x

Hi how did you get on,I'm worried sick I have to have a scan on Wednesday to check baby as I had slapped cheek xx

GBoxall · 06/07/2024 13:31

@YourFastPinkHelper

Bless you, I do really feel for you, it’s a stressful time.

Yeah you’re right. For me, they checked the blood flow in the baby’s brain, I think it’s the MCA blood flow they measure & they then check around baby’s organs for any excess fluid which can be indicative of anemia. They did this weekly for 12 weeks following the positive blood test as they said anaemia can take a little while to develop (if at all).

I know it’s a really stressful time, but please know that the consultant told me that the majority of pregnant women won’t even know that they have slapped check because symptoms can be so mild in adults, so the percentage of expectant mums passing it to their babies is likely to be a lot less than medical journals quote.

I really am thinking of you- try and take one day at a time x
