Hi, I was just wondering is it ok to eat bit of chocolate in first trimester. I've had breakfast but my gosh I'm still hungry and fancy chocolate. I didn't know if it was ok or not as I've heard certain foods are a no no. Thanks in advance.

@Jeyla1230 are you taking any prenatal vitamins?

You can have chocolate, and tea and coffee but shouldn't have too much - as PP said the guidelines for how much caffeine is on the NHS page.
For chocolate, it's about avoiding spikes in blood sugar so if you can, have chocolate for pudding after a proper meal rather than as a snack by itself.

I wonder if you're craving dairy - eg plain yoghurt or cottage cheese would be a good snack to try.

That's pretty much all I ate in both of mine and have two very healthy children. The actual list of not advised foods in pregnancy is very very small. As someone else advised have a look at the nhs website.

DelurkingAJ · 26/12/2023 10:19

My ‘extra calories because I’m pregnant’ consisted of having a second chocolate bar a day. The midwife laughed.

mizu · 26/12/2023 10:35

My mother always joked that she thought DD1 would be a chocolate baby. I think I ate 3 bars a day! Remember eating a curly wurly on the way to work most days.

Also ate a lot of pineapple 🍍 so never felt bad about it. DD1 now 19 and loves chocolate too Grin

You can drink tea and coffee. You just need to limit how much caffeine you have - especially in first 12 weeks.

Mows the time to switch to decaf.

Why would squash not be ok?
It doesn't contain caffeine

Someone has already posted the link for foods to avoid. Many foods on the list can be made safe by heating/cooking. Some foods/drinks have guidelines around the maximum amounts you should have. Look at the limits over the period of a week e.g. if you have lots on one day then have less of it the rest of the week.

Thankyouthankyoujellybean · 26/12/2023 12:44

@Jeyla1230 Ask whatever questions you like. It's better often better than googling, which can lead to some bizarre information. The NHS website is definitely the best place to look.

This is not a scientific experiment by any means, but in my first pregnancy, I ate as well as you could imagine: quinoa, avocado, fruit, organic meat (and chocolate, of course) etc. With my second I ate whatever got me through the day during lockdown with a toddler, loads of junk. The only difference between my boys is that the eldest will eat anything I give him, any vegetable will be tried. The second one has a much sweeter tooth and takes a lot of encouragement to start his veg, let alone eat it.

This is probably due to what I ate during pregnancy, but it's not the end of the world. Eat as well as you can manage, but never deny yourself chocolate!

I appreciate that, I hate googling things as never trust Google as I've been told. But NHS website I'll definitely look into. I'm trying to eat more veg as I don't really eat alot if it, I eat beans with my food but trying to have more veg aswell. I don't know what I want alot of the time (except chocolate)

You really don't need to be stressing over sesh and chocolate.

It's going to be a long 9 months if that's the case.
Why wouldn't you be able to drink squash?

Thank you I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm stressing more due to having bicornuate uterus. As in thinking I need to do this completely right, but reading these comments have helped me alot.

Try to drink water before you drink squash. Sugars and sweetners are another thing you don't want to have too much of - for your health in pregnancy, and the baby's. But you don't have to give it up altogether.

neleh87 · 26/12/2023 13:22

I just followed the NHS guidelines in the link you've been given. It's very simple to follow. Don't Google! For caffeine I had one caffeinated drink a day, sometimes 2, and had decaf the rest of the time. I didn't bother counting chocolate.

If you're very early on in the pregnancy, you may find your appetite is about to change anyway. For my first trimester I could barely stomach anything expect plain chicken and vegetables. This made me feel better when later on I just wanted chocolate!
