iirc, I used to get a triangular tummy when I sneezed or coughed when preg with DS, as the muscles, suc as they were, tighteed, I am sure you'll be fine.

MamaG · 14/03/2008 17:45

Oh God mine did this when I was pg with DS. Went back to normal afterward birth though.

When are you due Franny?

FrannyandZooey · 14/03/2008 17:48

LOL at 'ds drawing round my hand'

MamaG, July 4th

Pruni did you just EAT an exceptionally large toblerone?

OP posts:
BearMama · 14/03/2008 17:55

Mine does the same, at least it shows you have stomach muscles.

franke · 14/03/2008 18:01

Oh, I have this at the mo. I'm really snotty and it's driving me insane. I also get that toblerone look when I turn over in bed or try to get up.

MrsTittleMouse · 14/03/2008 18:14

I had that whenever I tried to sit up. DH thought that it was hilarious that we could actually see my stomach muscles parting company. I do wonder if they ever made it back again, but no point in wondering now that I'm pregnant again...

hollyhobbie · 14/03/2008 18:26

Hi all.
It's called Diastasis recti: here.

I had it when pregnant, but only know the real name for it because DS was born with it. His belly still does the 'Toblerone' thing (great description!) and he's nearly a year old.

FrannyandZooey · 14/03/2008 18:47

hold on
in that link they describe it as a defect and a disorder

how else is my uterus meant to grow to the size of a house - my stomach muscles NEED to get out of the way

it's normal surely? I was just worried about straining something by excessive nose blowing

callmeovercautious · 14/03/2008 18:51

God I had forgotten about that This happened to me, getting out of the bath was a strange experience

I think if it happens all the time it is a disorder, when PG it is a natural thing.

BroccoliSpears · 14/03/2008 18:55

Aha! I know this one.

It means your stomach muscles have separated. It wouldn't be your first choice, but it's not that bad. I had it first time and again now. It was a bit scary after having dd when the midwife put her WHOLE FIST between the muscles to demonstrate... uhh... actually, maybe she was just being mean.

DO NOT TRY TO RECTIFY THIS WITH SIT-UPS!!!
I mean, you probably wouldn't while pregnant anyway, but afterwards, don't do sit-ups. Sit-ups make it worse and harder to rectify.

My physio explained the best exercise to fix it thusly: You are wearing a bikini and walk from the changing rooms into a crowded swimming pool. Everyone turns to look at you. What you are doing with your tummy muscles - that's what you need to do, but not really tight all the way in, just mediumly. You can do this while preg and afterwards.

FrannyandZooey · 14/03/2008 18:56

but it's really NORMAL
isn't it?
how do you have a baby WITHOUT your stomach muscles separating?

OP posts:
MamaG · 14/03/2008 19:49

yes

It is normal IMO

callmeovercautious · 14/03/2008 20:19

In my extensive experience as the Mother to 1 DD it is normal.

Lots of things cause it. DP got a bit freaked out one night a few days before I was due when we were (ahem) trying to induce Labour

hollyhobbie · 14/03/2008 20:26

oh, it's surely normal when you're pregnant. My midwife said that it mainly happens if your stomach muscles are either weak or really strong, like ballet dancers would be more likely to get it.

I think it's more of a "defect and a disorder" when applied to newborns, DS's doctor told me that in some babies it's so bad that the muscles don't hold the intestines in, in which case they would have to have an operation. DS just has the toblerone thing, as I said, so he's fine, though he does have 'Bauchwanddefekt' written in his health book (we live in Germany- doesn't it sound scary written in German?)

Mouselady · 14/03/2008 20:33

Oh dear I have the most awful Bauchwanddefekt. I first noticed it when I sat up in the bath in August 1994 whilst seven months pregnant. It's never gone away despite another pregnancy, a few stone of weight loss - and I don't even like Toblerone.

FrannyandZooey · 14/03/2008 20:37

Bauchwanddefekt sounds TERRIBLE
no I do see in little children etc it is a problem
and I know for some women it doesn't go back of its own accord after pg

OP posts:
hollyhobbie · 14/03/2008 20:49

It's funny though, it's only after I got a name for it from DS's doctor and put it into Google and got lots of "you were pregnant now your tummy is a mess" type websites, that I realised that's what I had had (still have) while PG.
