When did you deliver and how big was he/she in reality? Especially if told over large AC?

I always remember my nana telling me about when my mum was born her first baby, now this was in 1914 , in those days apparently you made your baby cloths (think they use to call it your baby’s layette) any way my nana was a great seamstress and had made a lovely layette for a new born baby. But my Nana had married into a family of publicans that given her a bottle sweetheart stout to drink every day so when my mum was born she weighed 13Ibs . My Nana said it was like giving birth to a baby elephant, and then she had to start making another bloody layette as nothing fitted , apparently you would never take a baby out with out a bonnet and my mums head was so big.

This all happened at home in the east end of London so no hospital or pain killers just a midwife , I think they were made of stronger stuff in those days. Any way I only had baby’s of 7 and 7half Ibs . But it always made me smile as my mum was a very small petite woman and the thought of her being so big at birth was just so funny. I don’t think my Nana ever forgave her as she would often bring it up Well Ruth you might be slim now but it was like giving birth to elephant when I had you.

First was on track to be born large, waters went early and if you went by conception she was actually born at 36 weeks at 8lb 4. (37 weeks by nhs dates from 12 weeks scan mind). Second was induced at 38 weeks (due to size) and born at 38 weeks 1 day and she was 9lb 3. I am very tall, very wide hipped and my body would have probably been ok with a larger baby but I caved as it was close to Christmas and we’d all assumed she’d have been early.

jadey1991 · 01/12/2023 23:15

My ds, who is 22 months old, was a big baby and weighed 9lbs6oz. I was told at my 36-week growth scan he would be about 6lbs12oz. So he was a big baby. He was suppose to be my last as I had an extremely horrible delivery.
Fast forward 30.11.23 I just had my baby girl by c section weighing 8lbs1oz and she looks so tiny

Chanhedforthis · 01/12/2023 23:17

I was measuring 43 weeks at my 37 week growth scan. She was 8lb 1 oz.

Seriously79 · 01/12/2023 23:19

DS is now 15.

I was told he was going to be big and he was 10lbs. By my dates he was bang on time, but according to my scans he was a week early.

DD 4, I was told she was going to be big, but was 8lbs 1oz

elliejjtiny · 01/12/2023 23:24

They told me ds3 would be 10lb at least, lots of doom and gloom. I said he would be just under 9lb and 53cm long as that's just the size I tend to grow them. He was 8lb 12oz and 53cm long. I had 2 other babies born after that. They were prem and smaller but I had them weighed and measured on their due dates and they were both just under 9lb and 53cm long too. Really weird. With my 4th I had polyhydramnios so I was measuring huge. When my waters broke they measured my fundal height and I'd lost 13 cm. And my waters kept in gushing until my c-section 2 days later. The surgeon cheerfully told me that I still had loads more water than average in there when they got ds4 out.

Sodie · 01/12/2023 23:31

Induced three weeks early with my youngest because I had too much water and baby was measuring large. I ended up with an emergency csection because my waters went, my heart fate was over 150 and they couldn't reach his head to clip. He was 10lb7. My other children were all easy drug free births with no tearing but were average sized.

YoongiMarryMe · 01/12/2023 23:38

I was told my DS was going to be a big baby and that they couldn’t give an estimate of his birth weight as their charts didn’t go up that high. 😨😆
He was born at 38 weeks and was 10lb 8oz. Thank God I didn’t go overdue!

Gymmum82 · 01/12/2023 23:41

Dc 2 was measuring big. Had growth scans from 28 weeks. Predicted over 10lb.
They wanted to induce early and I declined. She was born naturally at 41 weeks weighing 10lb 3. Vaginal delivery and no problems

Grimmz · 01/12/2023 23:45

Are there any radiographers on who can help explain why growth scans are inaccurate?

ComfyBoobs · 01/12/2023 23:49

Legs off the chart on the scans, and a massive bump, but fine at 8lbs 1 at 9 days past his due date. Enormous head though (not predicted).

Meanwhile DS2 showed as below the 5th centrale, had to have regular scans from 34 weeks - and then was 7lbs 7 at a week before his due date.

Definitely much more art than science.

peachgreen · 01/12/2023 23:54

DD was 10lb 13oz and the longest baby they’d ever delivered at that hospital. Her head was 99th centile. She was well and truly stuck in my pelvis – even with a section it took forceps and 8 of them to haul her out and she was bruised and battered like a tiny boxer. One of us would have died without a section, I’m have no doubt – even as it was, I almost did (haemorrhage). I have no regrets about the section whatsoever and would do it again happily.

She’s 5 now and a very average 50th centile for weight and 75th for height! She was just a long, loooong baby.

FrangipaniBlue · 01/12/2023 23:59

I was told DS was already measuring 8lbs at 34 weeks so expect a 10lb+ baby

I went into labour and he was born at 39+2 weighing only 7lb!!

He was very long though and now at age 15 he is already 6 foot tall!!!

swingtowin · 02/12/2023 00:52

I went to almost 42 weeks with my first and was never told he would be big until his head appeared and the midwife said he was rather large- he was 10lbs 5.5oz

DrJump · 02/12/2023 01:04

DS1 was predicted to be large. I had a few sweeps and went into labour at 40+10. He was born after about 8 hours of active labour. I went in and was 9ish CM had gas and air. He was born with minimal pushing. He was 10 pounds 2.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 02/12/2023 01:18

1st baby born 41+4 10lb 11. Wad measuring big all along, estimated 10lb at 40 weeks, So they were pretty accurate. The second was breech so was going to be ELSC, but waters broke at home, so had an emergency one instead at 38+3 I think, 10lb 6. Again, the measurements were accurate. No GD either time

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 02/12/2023 02:51

Earlier in the evening, I was told he would be 8lbs and his head measurement was off the chart. He was 10lb 11 oz.

annlee3817 · 02/12/2023 03:15

@BiscuitLover3678 induction to be honest wasn't the best experience, staff shortages, five days in limbo, but when I got onto labour ward and they broke my waters 5 hours from start to finish, it was intense and completely unlike blmy first which was on the midwife led birthing unit. if I had my time again though I'd refuse induction and opt for c section, however I know people who have had positive experiences

WavingCatsandDogs · 02/12/2023 03:39

No warning of large babies here and they were both 9lb.

rickyrickygrimes · 02/12/2023 06:09

I’m surprised at so many sections here: I’m assuming most of these babies were born in the UK which I perceive as being less risk averse / more towards natural birth than say France, where things tend to be quite medicalised.

both mine measured big, both were over 10lb at birth, both pretty much on their due date. No one suggested either induction or c-section to me at any point. both were born naturally-ish in the end. dS1 was a shoulder dystopia - the modest told me it was nothing to do with his size and more to do with his position and the shape of my public arch. DS2 was a really slow birth, ended up being induced 48 hrs after my water had broken, but pushed him out in the end.

ds1 was born in NZ and DS2 born in France. And yes they are both very tall! DS1 over 6 foot by his 15th birthday, DS2 not far behind at 13 🤷‍♀️

PumpkinSpiceSeason · 02/12/2023 10:22

DS was normal size weight but for a while we were told he was tracking 90th (and more) percentile for head size and I was very scared. That was normal too. It's all a best estimate.

Ariela · 02/12/2023 11:55
