If you were told the baby was really large

When did you deliver and how big was he/she in reality? Especially if told over large AC?

I was told after scans at 34 & 36 weeks to expect a 10lb+ baby with dc2. They were finally born at 40+12 (by this point I was terrified) and weighed a whopping 7lbs! They just had very long legs but were incredibly scrawny looking, not like dc1 who was short but well padded (still only weighed 7lb14 though).

SockQueen · 01/12/2023 21:34

DS1 was 10lb completely unexpectedly, but born vaginally with minimal problems.

Had growth scans with DS2 as a result, then was induced with him at 39+1 as he was measuring 9lb12. And he was! Again, very normal vaginal birth.

I opted for induction rather than CS as I'd already done it once and been fine. If it was my first I might have chosen differently.

Other way with me, I had cholestasis and had to have DD at 37 weeks, they scanned the day before to check growth and estimated her at 5.5 lb, she was born the next day 7lb 6oz.

Stripyunicorn · 01/12/2023 21:36

Measuring big above 97% all the way through. Born via emcs at 37+6 weighing 9lb 13oz.

dottieautie · 01/12/2023 21:41

Was told my baby was really big. They worried he had a disability he appeared that big (I don’t understand the connection). He was born at 36.5wks EMCS as I had PE and was only just 7lb and a tiny thing. They said afterwards “oh sometimes we get it wrong” - The fear in between finding out and him being born was very real though. Mine isn’t an uncommon story

IReallyMissPrince · 01/12/2023 21:42

I was told to expect DC1 to be around 9lbs. He was 10 lbs 2 oz.

But I was also told that DC2 was ‘going to be 9lbs+’ at a late scan I needed to have for a health condition. She was 7lbs 2 oz.

sendismylife · 01/12/2023 21:44

I was told mine would be over 10lb and he was born 7lb 4oz. Still 3rd degree tear, though!

Lilithlogic · 01/12/2023 21:48

11 pound 8 ozs 3 weeks early, only went in for a scan. Big babies run in both sides of the family. My first was 8 pound 10 3 weeks early and second 10 pound 4 2 weeks early. I'm only 5 ft nothing, sons are all over 6ft

annlee3817 · 01/12/2023 21:56

DD2 I was told to expect at 9lber at 39 weeks, one of many reasons I was induced at 39 weeks. She was born at 39+5 weighing 7lbs 10.

DD1 on my due date they said she'd be 7lbs 6oz and she was that exact weight when she arrived at 40+5

How was the induction?

Did anyone who gave birth vaginally to a big baby struggle?

This is crazy - such a range of sizes! How can we decide what to do? 😭

Hi there I am a midwife working on a labour ward. I look after a lot of induced women (induction rates are very high in my hospital)..Like others said the scans are not always accurate. Also, it's not all about the size of the baby, labour outcomes also depend on the baby's position and the size and shape of the woman's pelvis . Annoyingly babies change position in labour all the time (from back-to-back to back-to-front and in the opposite direction). In my experience when a baby is too big for mum and/or the baby is an awkward position the labour will eventually stall and a CS becomes necessary. You will have a doctor appointment around 36 weeks. Providing you are comfortable with the risk of shoulder dystocia (which will be explained to you at the appointment) it might be an idea to go with the induction of labour with the low threshold for a Caesarean section written in your care plan. Induction often takes ages. However if it's quite clear that your labour is going nowhere you can simply insist you no longer wish to proceed with induction and the doctors will have to offer you a CS. I hope it helps

Had a 10 pound baby at 43 my first and unexpected as I had been told I would not be able to have children.
natural birth bit long and my pelvic floor is shot but hey it’s a miracle
tbw baby was so skinny (still is now 18 years old is ) but super long !!

SkyFullofStars1975 · 01/12/2023 22:14

Given C section at 37 weeks due to size of baby. She was 7lb 7oz, although very long. Placenta however was massive and I had a large PPH so turns out that theatre was the perfect place to be. I didn't hold any grudges put it that way!

CurlewKate · 01/12/2023 22:17

I was measuring large from quite early on. I was monitored more than if he'd measured smaller. He was born vaginally at 40+3 weighing 10lb 6.

kkneat · 01/12/2023 22:17

My first was told would be huge born on due date 9lb but had very big head was 3 hours pushing & 3rd degree tear. Next two both born at 36 & 5 days one 8lb 13 & other 8lb 12, forth born at 37 weeks 9lb 5. All of them were predicted very big so they were above average not huge though

Newyearnewarse · 01/12/2023 22:22

I was all set for a home birth and went for a check.up as movement had stopped.
Was told I was having a large baby and could choose an induction but would be very risky for.both baby and me or a c.section.
We opted for the c.section because of size and risk and I am glad I did. My baby was 12.11 !! That is not something I want to be responsible in pushing out.

RandomMess · 01/12/2023 22:23

I measured small but looked HUGE.

I am very short and pre kids was tiny.

10lb 6oz with huge placenta and "copious amounts" of fluid. Was induced at 40+17 and honestly it was fine but had no clothes to fit her as she was very very long and lean.

HappySammy · 01/12/2023 22:24

I'm 5ft2 and was told mine was big. She came a couple of weeks early and was only 8lbs. I had shoulder dystocia and it was incredibly painful. I genuinely thought I was going to die from the pain and fear. I'm never having children again but if I did, I'd schedule a C section in a heartbeat. I'd rather a slow recovery than the excruciating pain and fear of death. It's not what you want to hear but that was my experience.

Fleur405 · 01/12/2023 22:46

My DD was big for me (I’m 4’11 and about 7.5 stone) but not huge by any means. Also had shoulder dystocia which is pretty scary TBH but the medical team (there was lots of them at this point) were great and baby was fine.

Catson · 01/12/2023 22:47

I had a nearly 11lb 56cm long baby at 40+10 after a very long labour and emcs. I'd had one growth scan and they said they were expecting a 7 1/2lb baby although I was massive and I knew I was having a big baby., they didn't listen.

Not sure what to do this time, I think a emcs will be recommended but I don't know what to do. They have also spoken about growth scans, but again, I know how inaccurate the one I had was...

Runkle · 01/12/2023 22:51

AC went off the chart and scan I had the week she was born predicted she was 9lbs 6oz. Had elective c-section (for other reasons) at 39+3 and she was 9lbs 1oz. She was all limbs!

Uurrjb · 01/12/2023 22:56

A long time ago. All VBs

first:
on scans measured big because of head and thigh measurements 🤷🏻‍♀️2 weeks past due date 7.3lbs

second:
I was huge. Baby not measuring big. GD ruled out 2 wks late. Rapid weight gain in last few weeks. 10.11lbs

third:
induced on due date with spd as I couldn’t cope with going huge/late with a 4 and 2 yr old as was panicking. 7.4lbs

Jeevesnotwooster · 01/12/2023 23:02

For first sizing scan ( at 40 weeks plus 10 days) predicted 10 lbs 8oz. She was 10lbs 4oz.

Second was C section at 39 weeks and was 10lbs.

user6776 · 01/12/2023 23:03

Was told 9/10lbs, was induced at 38 weeks and he only weighed 7lb 5.

Neolara · 01/12/2023 23:08

I was told ds was going to be huge at a scan at 35 weeks. He was 8lb 10oz when he was born at just under 37 weeks. Pretty glad he turned up early! Ironically, his was the best of my 3 births. Wasn't even that painful.
