When did you end up going into labour if you had an emergency stitch placed?

Watching with interest xx

Mufflette · 01/12/2023 09:50

Mine wasn't an emergency but very short by the time it was put in at 22/23 weeks, taken out at 36 and gave birth at the very end of 37.

Inapickle2 · 01/12/2023 10:54

stitch put in as an emergency 22 weeks. Waters broke 27weeks. Gynae kept stitch in, went into labour 31 weeks and subsequent emergency c section.

pregnantmum36 · 01/12/2023 11:14

Thank you for your replies.

Oh wow they kept the stitch in once your waters broke? Were you put on hospital bed rest? @Inapickle2 x

@pregnantmum36 hi,yes…In and out of hospital for bedrest. My son has just turned 11 years old. So it was a while ago. They might not keep stitch in now after waters break. X

pregnantmum36 · 01/12/2023 11:21

@Inapickle2 wow that's amazing. I'm pleased to hear everything was okay x

I've just had my cervix measured and its borderline so they are putting in a stitch (hopefully soon), this is due to my son being born at 25 weeks 13 years ago.
Just wondering I'f anyone can advise on some effects, how you felt after procedure, and again any more people who can advise how long it held for.. xxx

pregnantmum36 · 06/12/2023 19:55

@Floralsandsmiles hey, the procedure went okay, completely painless as you'll have the spinal and recovery was quick. I stayed in hospital for the night as precaution but no complications. I was on moderate bed rest for about 2 weeks and then carried on as normal, except heavy lifting and pelvic rest. I'm still pregnant now at 32 weeks and had the stitch in at 20 :) waiting for baby to make their arrival but hopefully not for a good few more weeks yet.

Hi @pregnantmum36 👋thank you for replying! Was your stitch put in due to a short cervix? What length was yours if so?
Thank you for all the information! Hospital said I will stay in a day after and then will be signed off work for 4 weeks and then will be fine to continue as normal (but gently). No long walks, sex, swimming, baths etc. Xxx

pregnantmum36 · 06/12/2023 20:29

@Floralsandsmiles yes, I had about 12mm left at my 20 week scan. What length is yours? Yes that sounds about right. I was also put on progesterone, have they spoken about that too? X

Aww OK! I've been on progesterone since finding out I'm pregnant, and am now 16 weeks. They said that means that may have not worked for me. I am measuring borderline at 25mm and 23mm at my 16 weeks. My son I measured 7mm at 20 weeks and he was born at 25 weeks. Xxx

Floralsandsmiles · 09/12/2023 18:59

Hi ladies! So I had my stitch yesterday and sent home today. Can I ask if anyone had bleeding etc? I keep thinking I'm feeling cramping and it's linking to gas instead.. just worried for every tiny movement! Xxx

pregnantmum36 · 09/12/2023 20:51

@Floralsandsmiles hello :) I had slight bleeding for the first 48 hours - almost like a light period. I was really worried too in the first couple of weeks after, it's hard not to. But the stitch has a great success rate! Hope you're okay x

Aww thank you for your response. I will be honest, I was a complete basket case going in. Made a huge scene crying in theatre about the fear of epidural and then the procedure. Was so glad it was over. Now I don't want it to be for nothing, so am worrying that it didn't work. I had some spotting when wiping but only after going for a no.2 twice today (sorry for the tmi). It must have been the drugs working it's way out of my system as it wasn't because I needed to go as such. Anyway I think it's because that's more pressure than a wee maybe? No much since then then. Just terrified this won't work!
Did you do any bed rest period or back to normal bar lifting, long walks, baths etc. (Sorry I can't remember if I asked before) xxxx

pregnantmum36 · 10/12/2023 09:37

@Floralsandsmiles oh bless you, I was the same, I can completely sympathise. Mine all happened within hours I had 0 idea what was really going on, it was quite traumatic.

That's sounds all pretty normal to me. I did moderate bed rest for the first two weeks (and no work) then went back to normal just no heavy lifting, baths and pelvic rest. I have a toddler so bed rest would be impossible. My consultant did say bed rest can do more harm than good.

Max excerise I do is a 15 minutes walk. Although I can't even manage that anymore, I've got sooo much pressure haha! Counting down the week!

Aww I'm sorry that yours was so traumatic! But over the moon that its working so well for you! I hope its the same for me!
Will try to worry less and do the 2 week bed rest and then just take it easy as much I can. Just don't want to be put on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy as worried on work etc. Xxx

Hi @pregnantmum36 and @Floralsandsmiles I’ve just come across this thread now as I’m starting to think on the stitch removal. I couldn’t find any threads or real info on the cervical stitch when I had it placed back in the summer so it’s comforting to read similar stories from u both.
I’m due removal in 3 weeks and wondering the same on how long until labour afterwards. I know of one other person who had the stitch a few years ago, she pretty much went into labour when the stitch was removed and baby was born a few hrs later. I suppose I’m wondering are there other stories of it taking a few days/ weeks even? Drs have said all possibilities are likely so to prepare for each.
@pregnantmum36 i think ur prob 2/3 weeks ahead of me so u maybe already have it removed at this stage?

pregnantmum36 · 30/12/2023 18:42

@DmcinT hello, I have just turned 36 weeks and the plan was to take it out this week, however I have a c-section scheduled in now and so they are going to take it out at the same time as that.

I did ask this question however originally and my consultant replied 'it can be anything from a few hours to a few weeks from removal'. I think everybody is different! X

Hi @pregnantmum36 👋good luck with your c section and birth! 😊 xxx

Mufflette · 31/12/2023 09:09

Hi @DmcinT I found it really difficult to find any info about the stitch coming out! I had mine out at the end of 36 weeks, waters broke 1 week later and baby was born a few hours into 38 weeks. Waited a few hours with monitoring after it came out and then went home and carried on as normal for the next week.

pregnantmum36 · 31/12/2023 09:48

Late to this thread but I had my stitch out 12 days ago at 36 weeks exactly and I'm still very much pregnant! Have started to lose minimal amounts of plug since it came out but no real signs that anything is going to happen anytime soon!

Just for info I was having fortnightly cervical length scans following two previous preterm births (32 & 25 weeks) and a second trimester loss. Cerclage went in as an emergency rescue stitch at 21 weeks exactly. I'd been on progesterone from six weeks but cervix had gone from 32mm at 19 weeks to 13mm at 21 weeks, also had funnelling and when the Consultant pressed on my bump it opened further. I really, really thought I'd be amongst those who deliver quite quickly after removal. Apparently not 😂

Floralsandsmiles · 31/01/2024 19:40

Hi all, wondering how you are all getting on?
I'm currently nearly.25 weeks and had my stitch in since 16 weeks. I've had checkups every 2 weeks and stitch is holding and length is staying the same. Yay! It's 17mm post stitch, 24mm overall.
I was told today that they think and expect me to go to term, I'm over the moon (I had my 1st DC at 25 weeks).
They said that if baby is still staying put at 37 weeks they will remove stitch, my question is when did you have baby after stitch was removed? Xxx

Bananawotsit · 31/01/2024 19:51

Hi I had a planned stitch a long time ago. It was removed at 36 weeks and I went into labour at 41 weeks! Very strange! (I was expecting it to just “pop” open when stitch was removed - But apparently the pressure moves off the cervix as baby grows???). I did however go from 5cm dilation to having baby in about 20 mins so it was a fairly quick labour!
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancies! Xxxx
