Ask for gender at a 16 week NHS scan?

shortbreadcandle · 24/11/2023 13:40

Hi everyone!
My first 12 week scan with the NHS is actually going to take place when I'm 16 weeks (delayed self-referral)
I know the gender scan is the 20 week scan. But I was wondering if I could request to find out the gender at 16 weeks and if they are allowed to tell me?

thank you

I don’t think they’ll tell
you.

Cheeesus · 24/11/2023 13:46

I did and they got it wrong. I think it’s too early to tell.

FawnFrenchieMum · 24/11/2023 13:48

There is no such thing as a gender scan on the NHS.

You have medical scans during which time they may tell you the gender if easily seen and they have time.

Thank you all for your replies! xx

I went for what I thought was my 12 week scan. Turned out I was actually 16 weeks! Anyway, the sonographer said he could see the sex and did I want to know. We did. He told us he could clearly see it was a boy and he was correct.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/11/2023 13:49

You mean a scan which confirms the sex of your baby, not its gender.

No no, I meant a scan that will tell me what my child will identify as.

Are you actually serious?

Scans can only confirm the biological sex

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/11/2023 13:56

@shortbreadcandle I assumed your response to me was sarcastic but now I'm really confused

I had my gender scan at 15 weeks, you can tell but you've got to know your stuff.

OP, I'll be surprised if they tell you tbh.

ringmybe11 · 24/11/2023 13:57

I had an extra scan at around 16 weeks and I asked if they could tell me- she thought it was a boy which was confirmed at the 20 week scan. If they think it's a boy at that stage then it probably is but it could be too hard to tell from the position the baby is lying or how clear the scan is.

Dancingamaryllis · 24/11/2023 13:57

Both of mine were clearly boys at 16 weeks scan, it was very easy to see!

Dear Godess

Alloveragain3 · 24/11/2023 14:01

I had an NHS scan at 16 weeks after a small bleed.
The ultrasonographer was lovely and, at the end, asked if I wanted her to take a peek.
She warned it might not be accurate but said she was fairly sure it was a girl. She was right!

shortbreadcandle · 24/11/2023 14:02

Thank you everyone. Hope they will be able to tell, if not I'll only have to wait a few weeks hopefully.

I heard of people finding out early-ish through private scans but then again I don't know how accurate they are.

Well, hopefully

How will they possibly know what your child wants to identify as ? They can tell you the sex .

It was just a joke. I said hopefully they will be able to tell me what my child will identify as, as in I hope my child identifies as the same sex they are born with.

That's what I had at 15 weeks, the same guy done my gender scans - paid privately. He was always spot on and was correct with both my little ones.

Good luck, keep us update!

You can ask but they might say no. They sort of told me when I was only 12 weeks. I was pretty sure it was a boy because I’d had a sneak peek test done which said boy. I told the sonographer this and she said it did look like a boy to her as well (my baby is a boy so she was correct). So they can see something that early but it’s probably easy to get it wrong.
