I'm 6 weeks.
Tbh I've been eating really uunhealthy since week 4 which really is annoying me as I ate so healthy the month we conceived. I'm worried how I'm affecting my baby.
Dinner is usually pizza or shop bought pies
I'm living off toast and crisps.
I've ate one veg since Friday which was mashed carrot.
I worried I'm going to end up having a miscarriage due to my diet.
Yesterday and today for example
I had toast , tin of chicken soup and a sandwhich for dinner. ( shop bought ingredients were horrendous)
Today I've earned a slice of toast with butter and 3 packets of salted crisps.
While I haven't had any morning sickness at all ( this is also another worry that maybe I'm going to miscarry cause of my diet ) I have serious food aversions.
The thought of eating greens I can't tolerate them. I feel like im going to be sick not because of pregnancy but because they suddenly taste disgusting. I can't even eat mash Potato anymore.
Does anyone have any lunch or breakfast ideas that are quick but reasonably healthy ? That I could maybe try and work with . I'm even finding chicken intolerable and chicken is my favourite meat

I think this is not that unusual, I also went off various things and was verrry carby in early pregnancy, it’s not what you imagine. How about fruit, does that feel doable? Smoothies, or fruit with yoghurt and honey maybe? But just do what you can and know this does not cause miscarriage, many women have had healthy babies having eaten rubbish, or even very little due to being so ill.

Emsxox · 21/11/2023 15:14

I had food aversions to almost everything this pregnancy mostly everything I ate til about 17 weeks was carbs! Try not to worry too much make sure you’re taking pregnancy vitamins to get the nutrients that you need. Could you stomach some fruit juice maybe?
my appetite came back for most foods and I can eat fruit and veg fine now you can make up for it when you feel better xx

PinkRoses1245 · 21/11/2023 15:17

well I ate very healthily before and first weeks, and had a miscarriage. You can’t cause it, that’s a very unhelpful thing to say.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 21/11/2023 15:40

I was almost identical with any slimy veggies being disgusting! And some times id want something then half an hour later couldn't stand the thought of eating it .

It's hard to know what you will and don't like.

I had yoghurt with berries most mornings and usually this was fine but not always. Humous or avo on your toast to get some protein and good fats in. Eggs - are any way of eating these ok? Do you like quorn or tofu if you're off meat? Beans on toast?

If you like crisps then quinoa or banana chips etc instead of potato.

You need fuel! Protein is important but please remember some ladies throw up every day and lose weight and their babies are ok.

I've also had a miscarriage despite a healthy lifestyle. Most are due to issues with the baby, nothing that is anyone's fault.

Devilsmommy · 21/11/2023 15:48

I was at my local chip shop at least once a day, sometimes more, during my whole pregnancy. I've got a healthy 14mo. Eat what you can and take pregnancy vitamins. Alot of women eat crap when pregnant and it changes nothing. Anxiety is probably worse for the baby tbh

Kris123499 · 21/11/2023 16:31

Thanks guys for your replies.
I'm going to pick up some yogurts and see if I can maybe blend them with some strawberries to make smoothies.
Can't tolerate eggs at all. I used to eat them regularly.
The smell of them now is unbearable. I can't even stand my partner cooking them.

Regarding worrying my diet causing a miscarriage, I said this because this is what's plastered over the Internet if you read about an unhealthy diet with saturated fat ect increasing your risk and its left me paranoid. Reading things like "A diet high in 'ultra-processed food' was shown to be associated with doubling of miscarriage risk."
It's not something I've just made up.
I'm sorry for your loss but I should be able to express myself and get some reassurance and advice from others if something is making me feel down and concerned in my pregnancy. I'm not trying to offend anyone

I didn't eat anything green the whole of my first pregnancy - I would get egg fried rice and chips at least twice a week and pick the peas out as the smell made me feel sick, baby was fine. Do what you need to survive!

AvengedQuince · 21/11/2023 17:21

You can avoid UPFs and still eat what you feel okay to eat of non UPFs. If you can't do green vegetables then eat the vegetables you can eat, or fruit in smoothies.

PecanPeach · 21/11/2023 17:24

I couldn't stomach anything but beige until week 13.. I figured eating beige was better than not eating at all

softfig · 21/11/2023 18:16

I suggest speaking with your midwife about this, rather than reading horror stories online OP. Not everything online is factually correct and it's obviously making you a bit anxious.
Smoothies sound like a good idea if you can tolerate them. I lived off marmite on toast in my first pregnancy.

AvengedQuince · 21/11/2023 18:25

If you can only eat beige food like bread then you could buy decent bread and so on

RiderofRohan · 22/11/2023 06:03

Can you maybe try to prepare some of the food at home? Homemade soups and pies will likely be better than shop bought.

Thankyouthankyoujellybean · 22/11/2023 06:23

Can you keep down a multivitamin? Really, don't worry about it. Pregnancy is weird and your body is doing what it needs to do (or thinks it needs to do).

I find raw veg (carrots, cauliflower, peppers, lettuce, celery) much more appealing than anything cooked. Nuts?

SnapdragonToadflax · 22/11/2023 06:28

Is this on tiktok? This is the second thread we've had saying this in a week.

I also lived on beige, had aversions to basically everything healthy. Couldn't face anything green at all. It lessened as I got into the middle and end of the pregnancy, and baby was fine.

DemelzaRobins · 22/11/2023 07:26

The internet says some batshit things about pregnancy unfortunately. Try not to worry about diet too much - just eat what you can.

During early pregnancy your baby is getting nutrients from the yolk sac. In later pregnancy they'll sap your reserves of nutrients.

Some of my friends lost weight during pregnancy and grew their babies on toast, chips and crisps. All their babies were born in excellent health and remain so.

MummyJ36 · 22/11/2023 07:32

Go easy on yourself, you’re in the trenches stage of pregnancy! Once the morning sickness eases you can get back to eating more healthily if that’s what you’d like to do. homemade smoothies are probably the easiest way to get fruit&veg into your diet. I know an adult man who hates veg and this was the way he got it into his system 🤣 Also try not to stress, there is far too much “advice” these days about what you should and shouldn’t eat during pregnancy. If pizza is what you want then eat some pizza! Feeling happy and relaxed is far more important than enjoying some carbs!

ABCXYZ17 · 22/11/2023 07:38

My diet during pregnancy was terrible, I could only tolerate beige carbs. My child is now 7, is healthy, bright and doing well. Eat what you can, make healthier choices if you can but don’t worry. Try to avoid UPF too much and too much sugar but honestly some days just getting food down is an achievement.

Nynm23 · 22/11/2023 08:01

In my first couple of weeks my go to was a mc Donald’s breakfast. I told the midwives this, as like you I was concerned by the lack of variety in diet. Their response was as long as you are eating, that’s more important and eat better when you can.

I’m 18 weeks and some days all I can face are carbs, but on the days I’m feeling ok I try to prioritise fruit and veg.

how about some oats - they’re carbs and have some fibre in them? Homemade soups over store bought? Or if you can’t face cooking, some good quality store bought like M&S fresh soups? Pasta with a sauce with some veg blended in?

I can completely empathise with how you are feeling, just do what you can and try not to stress 💚

Liveafr · 22/11/2023 09:06

Congratulations on your pregnancy. It's perfectly normal to be worried about miscarriage, but according to the internet anything you eat or breathe will cause all sorts of terrible pregnancy outcomes. Many websites will bank on women's anxiety about pregnancy and write all sorts of clickbait articles. I would suggest sticking to reputable sources like the NHS. Most miscarriages occur because the embryo is genetically abnormal and cannot develop into a healthy baby, it happens because there is something genetically wrong with the egg or sperm, something that is determined weeks or months before conception. Of course it's still better to eat healthy, but remember that most pregnant women have some sort of food aversion in the first trimester and still have healthy babies. Here's an idea of comfort food that you could cook:

Lentil Mushroom Stew Over Mashed Potatoes

An unhealthy diet does not and cannot cause a miscarriage. As far as I'm aware, there are no accepted studies that even suggest this.

Early miscarriages are usually due to chromosomal issues with the fetus and have nothing to do with what you ate.

First trimester eating habits are rarely healthy for most women. The food aversion and nausea mean we have eat what we can to keep our bodies going, some women can barely eat anything at all, some can only stomach unhealthy food and some can only eat bland food.

At your gestation, the yolk sac gives your baby the nutrition it needs. When you get further along, healthier eating, or at least a mire balanced diet, will be more encouraged but at this stage, just eat what you can when you can.

My first trimester wasn't the most fun and I was pretty unhealthy throughout. Only thing that helped my nausea was full sugar tango and salt and vinegar walkers crisps, so that was my main diet 😅 baby girl is fine and I'm healthier now.

Just take your folic acid and vit D (or prenatal if you're using something like pregnacare) if you can keep it down and try not to worry about your eating habits too much.

DuploTrain · 22/11/2023 09:48

Don’t worry, just eat whatever you can stomach. And when your food aversions settle down you can go back to eating more healthily.

The baby will get all the vitamins and goodness it needs from the reserves you’ve built up before you were pregnant.

Kris123499 · 22/11/2023 12:45

Thank you for all your reassurances. I'm going to look into smoothies and maybe try and opt for a veg soup.
Yes I've been taking my prenatal and my dha capsules. Thankfully I'm not eating sweet stuff.ive steered clear of that as I'm pre diabetic.
Diet hasn't improved much in past few days. Still toast and crisps for breakfast lol but hopefully I can start adding in some of your suggestions
I feel alot more relieved knowing its normal and lots of you have had poor diets with no adverse effects.
I did manage to eat some beans for dinner last night.
Festive Sandwiches with cranberry sauce this time of year seem to be going down well so I might try adding some spinach leaves or something extra into those so at least there's a hint of goodness
