I know some of you will probably laugh at this but please refrain from being nasty.
I'm newly pregnant. Only found out a few days ago . My gp has said yesterday I'm almost 5 weeks. This morning I had some sickness and my appetite has been really off past week. I havent ate the greatest. I was craving something salty and was really hungry so ate half a tub of pringles. My friend had came over ( she already knows I'm pregnant as it was her who gave me the tests) she said to me that eating crisps can cause development problems with my baby or cause a miscarriage. I ended up googling it and found all these websites saying that eating crisps does cause development issues . Now I've been extremely stressed. I also ate the other half on Saturday along with a pizza while out for our anniversary. I did however have a healthy dinner Sunday with veg. Yesterday wasnt great. Couldn't eat all day and when I did I ate a pukka pie
It says I shouldn't be eating crisps at all. Now I'm paranoid because I've already had 2 previous miscarriages . Does anyone think there's any truth to this or is it scaremongering. Its taken so long to get pregnant again I'm so concerned

Wtf! This can't be true!

peebles32 · 14/11/2023 18:28

OP. I have had five children and eaten loads throughout my pregnancies of everything. Five healthy children. You will be fine!

lljkk · 14/11/2023 18:28

do ya' think?

On off chance OP is legit, you do know the Internet is full of random nonsense, yes?

Chancingtheirarm · 14/11/2023 18:28

Please don’t worry. I ate lots of crisps and there has been no effect on my pregnancies.
You won’t have done any harm at all, I promise.

Althenameshavegone · 14/11/2023 18:28

They’re a terrible friend, so they know you’ve had miscarriages before? crisps are fine!

Dacadactyl · 14/11/2023 18:29

Well I've never heard of crisps causing issues.

I smoked and drank for first few months of being pregnant with DD (didn't know I was pregnant) She's 16 now and clever/well adjusted and I would be surprised if crisps and pukka pies are more dangerous than fags and booze.

RoseRows · 14/11/2023 18:29

Crisps are fine, your friend is a moron.

ditalini · 14/11/2023 18:30

You're fine, your friend is not your friend.

Lilibert456 · 14/11/2023 18:31

Don't be daft. Of course you haven't but your diet sounds pretty unhealthy if you eat this sort of thing all.the time.

SirChenjins · 14/11/2023 18:31

Ditch the friend and replace her with more crisps. OP - you’re fine to eat them.

Can you link to some of these sites and I’ll dissect the crap for you?

Hummusanddipdip · 14/11/2023 18:31

That can't be true, I lived off ready salted crisps for the first trimester and into the second. I couldn't stomach anything else. And ds is a string and healthy 4 year old now.

There is so much out there to worry you, please stick to the NHS website (or your countries equivalent if you're not UK) because that's the safest info place.

Also, congratulations!

SeethroughDress · 14/11/2023 18:32

OP, you need to learn to distinguish between internet nonsense and credible sources,, NICE guidelines etc.

For what it’s worth, practically the only thing I ate for nine months (horrible nausea) was barbecue-flavour Hula Hoops.

AwkwardPaws27 · 14/11/2023 18:33

That's bollocks OP. Please don't be scared by crap advice!

I'd really advise sticking to the NHS website (as someone who was overthinking & stressing after several losses, I set myself a rule to only follow food advice from there as there is so much bullshit "advice" floating around the internet).

Crisps are fine. Try and get some healthy stuff too, take your folic acid, but don't stress too much.

KJ00 · 14/11/2023 18:33

Thanks guys. I know when I think about it sounds completely daft. People have terrible diets and drink alcohol, drugs ect and babies are fine.
When I was told this and then I found websites that seemed to back this up it send me a little overboard and just put this ideas in my head that I haven't been able to stop thinking about. I probably am being a little over sensitive to the fact I've had prior miscarriages

Please link to these websites and we'll have a look.

Switchasaurous · 14/11/2023 18:34

Eat. The. Crisps.

Meeting · 14/11/2023 18:34

Only half a tube? I ate the whole thing more than once.

SiobhanSharpe · 14/11/2023 18:35

You had something to eat after having a poor appetite, sounds great to me. Your body told you what it needed. Your friend is daft.

momtoboys · 14/11/2023 18:35

If I ever fell down into that fear rabbit hole when I was pregnant, I would remind myself that my mothers generation drank alcohol and smoked their entire pregnancies and we are just fine. Don't be so hard on yourself.

Luckydog7 · 14/11/2023 18:35

I lived off Chinese food and crunchy nut cornflakes for both mine. Both are fine.

Everything gets inflated in importance at this time I would try to find ways to keep your anxiety in check, meditation, long bathes etc.

But I could make a Wordpress website that claims literally anything. The internet is full of flat earthers, conspiracy theorists, incels, all-purpose nutters. I would look very carefully at the source of anything found online.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/11/2023 18:36

When pregnant with DS1 I craved spinach and Wotsits. I ate loads of both. DS1 is now 27 and not at all affected

It's a good idea to eat a healthy, balanced diet but the odd bag of crisps or Pringles is not going to do any harm

ScrummyDiva2 · 14/11/2023 18:36

Horrible all day sickness with both my pregnancies. Could only stomach carbs so lived off crisps, potatoes in every form, toast, pizza! Two very healthy children! You'll always find confirmation of any crazy notion on the internet- only look on NHS sites for pregnancy advice!

ditalini · 14/11/2023 18:36

There was a Daily Mail article about evil crisps 10 years ago which came off the back of the acrylamide food scare. It dredged up a whole load of stuff (as is the way of the "everything causes/cures cancer" Mail.

Funnily enough, in the intervening 10 years we're no further forward in the battle against the crisp scourge because it doesn't exist.

mummyh2016 · 14/11/2023 18:36

Sorry but your friend sounds like a fucking idiot.
