I know some of you will probably laugh at this but please refrain from being nasty.
I'm newly pregnant. Only found out a few days ago . My gp has said yesterday I'm almost 5 weeks. This morning I had some sickness and my appetite has been really off past week. I havent ate the greatest. I was craving something salty and was really hungry so ate half a tub of pringles. My friend had came over ( she already knows I'm pregnant as it was her who gave me the tests) she said to me that eating crisps can cause development problems with my baby or cause a miscarriage. I ended up googling it and found all these websites saying that eating crisps does cause development issues . Now I've been extremely stressed. I also ate the other half on Saturday along with a pizza while out for our anniversary. I did however have a healthy dinner Sunday with veg. Yesterday wasnt great. Couldn't eat all day and when I did I ate a pukka pie
It says I shouldn't be eating crisps at all. Now I'm paranoid because I've already had 2 previous miscarriages . Does anyone think there's any truth to this or is it scaremongering. Its taken so long to get pregnant again I'm so concerned

Don’t worry OP, half a tub of Pringles never hurt anyone. Take it easy on yourself, you’re doing fine.

sassyduck · 14/11/2023 19:01

Your friend is an idiot. Crisps are fine. Try not to worry too much!

Libertass · 14/11/2023 19:02

Firstly, congratulations on you pregnancy.

Secondly, do have a serious problem here, OP. But it’s not the bloody Pringles.

Your ‘friend’ is either a total moron, a nasty malicious bitch, or both. Dump her now before she tries to sabotage your happiness again.

Neither of those websites you've linked are anywhere near reputable sources, stick to the NHS website for your health info for the next nine months or you'll drive yourself (dry roasted) nuts.

Exactly. One of them is a dimwit lifestyle supplement of an Indian newspaper, the other looks like some kind of weight loss site. Neither links to any proper sources.

Allmarbleslost · 14/11/2023 19:03

You really haven't harmed your baby op. I had dreadful nausea for the first 14/15 weeks with both pregnancies and essentially lived off ready salted crisps and crackers. Please don't worry.

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/11/2023 19:06

Your friend is an idiot. Don't spend any more time even thinking about what she says. I was so sick throughout my whole pregnancy I ate whatever I could keep down including crisps and biscuits and had a healthy baby of 7lb 14oz.

Torganer · 14/11/2023 19:06

I ate lots of Pringles, and apart from my baby being born with a twirly moustache, they are otherwise fine!

Jokes aside, crisps are fine. If you’re still concerned and want crisps, get kettle chips or the like. They are just potatoes, oil, and salt.

I ate a rare (practically raw) burger, didn’t notice until I was 3/4 through it. I also drank so much before I knew I was pregnant as was on holiday and we had decided to ‘relax’ about trying as I’d had multiple miscarriages and had been trying again for nearly a year.

I practically lived on sushi for the whole of my viable pregnancy as that was the only thing I could stomach, vegetables were a massive turn off (I usually love them!). Also salty crackers, and pretty much anything beige but with lots of garlic and chilli. The baby is now 2 and completely fine with a healthy appetite.

I know it’s hard, I didn’t fully relax until about 35wks because of the previous miscarriages (didn’t tell anyone until I was 20wks!). That was short lived as I then had issues with reduced movements (baby was fine, just couldn’t feel them sometimes and I could see they were moving when I was hooked up).

Then when the baby is born, there are a whole new set of worries! So, when you can, try and relax and it enjoy it as much as you can. Good luck!!

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 14/11/2023 19:07

Yeah, sorry, if you eat crisps your baby will come out looking like a potato.
Oh no, wait, that's what all babies look like.

CaramelMac · 14/11/2023 19:10

The only thing I could stomach for my entire pregnancy was crisps and 0% alcohol beer, my baby was just fine and is now excelling at school, so it didn’t do us any harm.

therealcookiemonster · 14/11/2023 19:13

@KJ00 it is normal to feel a bit extra worried given your medical history but crisps in moderation are fine. have a look at the NHS website for good solid advice. apart from avoiding drugs, alcohol, smoking, raw seafood or meat and certain cheeses you are pretty much ok to eat everything. tbh in the first trimester whatever you can eat is a bonus if your nausea is bad. congratulations and hope it all goes well x

LakeTiticaca · 14/11/2023 19:15

You only ate HALF the tube?
Get the rest down your neck ASAP!!

KJ00 · 14/11/2023 19:21

Thankyou very much guys
Yes part of me knew it was nonsense but then part of me also wondered .
I know my past history with pregnancy has created anxiety in me somewhat.
I'm not going to listen to any more nonsense and just focus on trying to eat healthy if I can and enjoy some junk if I'm not. I guess at the end of the day eating junk food is still going to be healthier than not eating anything at all.
I used to eat healthy everyday but for the past week I've had a very low appetite and struggled to eat healthy at all Had a healthy roast with plenty of veg on Sunday and it didn't sit well with me at all. Its so hard when it's the one time you know you should be eating healthy but your body won't let you. Crisps, chicken soup and pies seem to be the only thing right now that dosent make me want to vomit

24 satsumas, me!! 🤣🤣

Wheeeeee · 14/11/2023 19:28

I'm usually an incredibly healthy eater, loads of veg etc but I'm currently in my first trimester and living off mini cheddars, potato waffles, chicken noodles and pints and pints of milk. I managed a satsuma yesterday and was so proud of myself 😅 last pregnancy was the same and DS is just fine, so I'm gonna ride it out.

Desolatewardrobe · 14/11/2023 19:28

I ate a bag of Quavers every day around 9.30am to stop myself throwing up. I remember before anyone knew I was pregnant pulling out a pack in a fairly important meeting and just having to chomp away while getting some very odd looks.

Twimum23 · 15/11/2023 05:09

@KJ00 pringles was my go to when I was pregnant specially the green and bbq one also babies liked theses sour cream and chive mini cracker things as when I ate Them the babies kicked like crazy

Giggorata · 15/11/2023 06:20

Decades ago when pregnant with DS2, a bunch of us took food vans round the festivals and we ended up with a room full of boxes of crisps at the end of the season… the only time in my life that I got fed up with eating crisps, we ate them morning noon and night.
DS2 is a healthy and extremely bright nerd of nearly 50 years.

Congrats on your pregnancy and eat what you can stomach or what your body tells you it needs. (Some women eat coal.)

Haha I can identify with this... I'm a teacher and in both my first trimesters I had to have a fruit pastille in my mouth at all times not to be sick, I'd be talking to my students with a sweet in the side of my cheek...I work in a boys' school and they were all too polite/bemused to comment. I've previously taught with a hot water bottle clutched to me for period pain and again, they never commented, probably thought "women stuff" and didn't go there lol.

Edited to add: I just found out at the dentist yesterday I'm showing early signs of tooth decay for the first time in my life! No surprise really!

SirChenjins · 15/11/2023 08:49

I developed an obsession with chippy chips with pickled onions with DC1, and it was danish pastries with DC2 - must have been craving carbs for some reason. Both turned out just fine!

Bells3032 · 15/11/2023 11:08

What a load of nonsense. honestly you search the internet long enough it will tell you breathing will harm your baby. it's total rubbish. if it was dangerous the NHS website would advise against it. and even those on the nhs website a small amount is unlikely to cause any issue it's a question about risks.

And at 5 weeks the baby is getting all it's nutrients from the yolk, it's not actually getting anything from you yet.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 15/11/2023 18:42

I ate so many Wotsits with DS1 that DH joked he would come out bright orange. He was born with ginger hair. That was due to genetics, not Wotsits. My sister was scrupulous about what she ate in pregnancy and also had a red haired baby.

GLC789 · 15/11/2023 22:56

I've pretty much lived off crisps and currently 16 weeks pregnant with no issues

My widwife was completely un-bothered by my crisp diet revelation when I told her how I was yesterday. So safe to assume, crisps are fine.

Be kinder to yourself op, and chow down On those salty little heavenly potato flatties xxx
