Are these tests positive?

I have a mirena coil. I have been feeling off recently, have bigger than usual boobs and have had a bit of unusual spotting. Over the weekend I started to feel nauseous and exhausted. Assumed I couldn’t be pregnant but had some tests laying around and decided to put my mind at rest.

do these look positive or just an evaporation line? These looked like this after 3 minutes.

To me they look positive. I would make a digital test to double check.

SallyWD · 13/11/2023 10:43

Look positive to me. I hope this isn't a disaster for you OP

April088 · 13/11/2023 10:52

Far safer to leave an IUS in during a pregnancy (if OP wants to continue with the pregnancy) as removal is likely to induce miscarriage. I wouldn’t be happy to remove it if OP presented to my clinic.

OP is this an okay surprise or an ‘oh shit’ surprise?

Jessforless · 13/11/2023 11:14

Looks positive to me too OP but agree with PP I would get a digital.

1234iso · 13/11/2023 12:09

It’s a very unexpected situation but definitely not an “oh shit”. I’m just so confused as to how it could happen!

Get a digital one just to make sure.

helpmum2003 · 13/11/2023 12:37

OP you need to see a Dr or nurse ASAP. There is a higher chance of ectopic pregnancy with a coil in so a scan is required. If you continue the pregnancy whether to remove the coil or not will depend on relative locations of coil and pregnancy. In general the miscarriage risk is lower with the coil out but your risk of miscarriage will be higher than other pregnancies.

Yes absolutely. I have an appointment with a nurse tomorrow about something different but I am going to mention it. I’m worried if it’s positive I might be really early and maybe they won’t be able to see anything on a scan?

@1234iso Might be a bit early tomorrow, but they could schedule you for another scan in a week or two, just to check location.

Hope it all works out!

Guessing they weren’t accurate…

It really depends. Whats the sensitivity of the red dye tests?
The digital ones are only 25mUl. And this is NOT your FMU, if youve just done that digital.
This early on, you really need to use first morning urine.
I would restest tomorrow morning with your FMU.

I didn’t even know that was a thing, oops! Pack for red dye says 10 mUl, does that mean it’s more sensitive?

It does, yes! So based on that, I would say your hCG is probably somewhere in between 10 and 25.
But the lack of concentration in your urine during the day might also be skewing the tests.
Based on that kind of hCG, Id say you are very early on, just over 3 weeks.
Definitely mention it to the nurse you are seeing tomorrow. A blood test would be more conclusive, if shell do it for it

Thank you so much for the advice. Will try get my hands on some more ultra sensitive tests and speak to the nurse tomorrow. Hope they’ll do a blood test!

Good luck! If you really are pregnant (and based on the red dye tests, it seems oyu are), considering you IUD, it is better to be followed from early on!

Best of luck tomorrow! Keep us updated, please!

Leigh111 · 13/11/2023 18:49

They look positive to me. Definitely mention it to the nurse, though they may need you to see a GP to be referred to EPAU. Good luck OP

I do this for a living - do you? It doesn’t need to be out, it can safely stay put if the woman wishes to continue with the pregnancy. If you remove a coil then you risk dislodging a developing pregnancy. Literally nobody I work with would remove a pregnant woman’s coil as we are not licensed to perform abortions (which we may induce if we removed it)

A coil can raise the risk of an ectopic pregnancy if the woman falls pregnant with a coil in situ, but it won’t suddenly make a pregnancy that is already developing in the uterus go back into the fallopian tube. OP does, however, need a scan to confirm location of the pregnancy.

It really does. If that wasn't the case my friend wouldn't have had hers removed straight away

And baby was completely fine.
