I have a mirena coil. I have been feeling off recently, have bigger than usual boobs and have had a bit of unusual spotting. Over the weekend I started to feel nauseous and exhausted. Assumed I couldn’t be pregnant but had some tests laying around and decided to put my mind at rest.

do these look positive or just an evaporation line? These looked like this after 3 minutes.

Are these tests positive?

Obviously not a baby at the time as she was so early but caused no issues removing it

It really does. If that wasn't the case my friend wouldn't have had hers removed straight away

Okay 👍🏼

Mamato29192 · 13/11/2023 21:00

She was that early you couldn't see pregnancy on the scan. She was like 3/4 weeks pregnant when removed it so yeah says it's pretty urgent

It needs to be out. My friend got hers removed it can cause etopic

Yeah no. It really doesn’t.

If a woman is scanned and has an in utero pregnancy it will most likely be left there.

You’re giving really silly and dangerous ‘advice’ based on a random friend’s experience with zero professional knowledge on the subject.

It is not safe to remove a coil in a pregnant woman. Far, far safer to leave it in situ, especially if the woman wanted to keep the pregnancy. Even if she didn’t, I would have no business removing that coil as I am not an abortion practitioner. If the woman wanted the coil removed along with the pregnancy, the abortion clinic can do that. If she wants to continue the pregnancy, not a chance in hell would I risk her pregnancy and my own registration removing a coil that does not need to come out. The chances of falling pregnant with a coil are <1%, and of that <1%, the chances of that being an ectopic pregnancy are around 1 in 20. If the pregnancy has implanted and is already developing in the uterus, it doesn’t get sucked back into the tubes just because there’s a coil there. Also, there’s a higher risk of an ectopic pregnancy if a woman fell pregnant without a coil in.

Well they didn't want to risk it with her so. They took it seriously. Which I'm glad

@Mamato29192 well I think @WetBandits and I agree as HCPs that your friends experience was unusual and not best practice, and shouldn’t be used as an example to encourage the OP to go haring off to her GP to urgently remove her coil.

She needs an appointment to confirm or exclude a pregnancy, if pregnant a scan to check where the pregnancy is, and then a discussion as to how this will be managed depending on whether she wants to continue with the pregnancy.

@1234iso hope you get the answers you want.

update: I did an ultra sensitive test last night and it was positive again, but this mornings was negative. I have no idea what to think. I’m having a blood test to detect any HCG levels this morning so fingers crossed should know for definite soon.

I feel for anyone who has this uncertainty and is actively trying to get pregnant, it is so upsetting.
