My boss in work said that you choose the kind of pregnancy you want

This was in relation to a conversation about morning sickness. I am really struggling at the minute with all day nausea and vomiting 4-5 times a day.

I just think silly me for choosing this sickly looking like death surviving on jacobs cream crackers pregnancy when I could have chosen the glowy mother nature eating kale type pregnancy.

Obviously the last paragraph is a joke... I want to vomit on her, see how she feels then. She's had 3 children too! You'd think would be a bit more understanding!

What kind of pregnancy did you choose?

Grrrr this makes me angry! I assumed your boss was a man at first, so shocked she’s had three kids.

im nearly 27 weeks and it’s been horrific for me, from 7 weeks to 16 was throwing up daily and couldn’t keep any food down. And I’m still being sick now, not as often but still sick!! Didn’t keep my breakfast down this morning!!

before being pregnant I just thought you don’t feel any different, maybe just a bit bigger but omg it’s literally the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

the sickness, the breathlessness, the hotness constantly sweating and my boobs and tummy are so hot as they’re stretching and I can’t get comfy! Then the struggling to get up off the sofa, not being able to sleep because I’m so uncomfy and hot! So hot all the time! And I’ve still got quite a bit of growing to do.

fortunately my boss (who’s a man) is very understanding and said pregnancy affects everyone differently, since May I’ve had about 6 weeks off work in total and he’s been great about it.

I feel so angry for you that your boss made that comment! Pregnancy is so so so hard, I’ve genuinely been so knocked by it, just didn’t expect it to be this hard. I wish I could choose for an easy pregnancy like your boss seems to think I can.

Ummm... My mum was on bed rest from 28 weeks... She "chose" that did she?

As it was my pregnancy was awful - couldn't even stand up at the end (couldn't even shower with a chair dragged into the shower, it was that bad).

I had to bed rest for about the last month, which I thought was good compared to my mumma

Blue2020 · 13/10/2023 21:11

I wasn’t a fan of the sickness and tiredness in the first trimester, or the preeclampsia in the third trimester. The second trimester was actually pleasant and nice though, feeling movements.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 13/10/2023 21:11

Sounds like one of those gormless hunbots who believe in "manifesting". Does she do MLM on the side?

Donein2023 · 13/10/2023 21:12

I chose hyperemesis and depression, chucked in post natal ptsd for the craic too!

in seriousness, pregnancy sickness support genuinely saved my life so reach out to them, loads of helpful advice about medication to manage the sickness and your rights at work too.

CrystalDay · 13/10/2023 21:14

Oh I totally chose to get severe nausea and vomiting the whole way through and not being able to walk without feeling like I was being stabbed in the crotch.

It was so amazing. If I ever have any more I think I'll choose it again. Who wants a nice ailment free pregnancy?

lollydu · 13/10/2023 21:14

I chose an easy breezy first pregnancy but then the second time around I decided I'd like a change so guess I chose to be sick as a dog and get gestational diabetes. Your boss is an idiot!

itsmyp4rty · 13/10/2023 21:15

What a CF.

fourlambbhunas · 13/10/2023 21:18

I chose the 'every single food item under the sun repulses me, and I will vomit if I so much as have a sip of water' pregnancy. It just seemed like a good choice 👍🏼

It's certainly quite a popular one...

CatkinToadflax · 13/10/2023 21:19

I chose to have an incompetent cervix, a stitch that didn’t work and my baby born at 24 weeks with multiple complex disabilities as a result.

And then for my second pregnancy I chose two stitches that worked and a baby born at 38 weeks with no issues at all.

What an utter twat your boss is, OP. Sending hugs x

Tell her you've read that you can also choose the death you want. Some people just do it badly.

ladygindiva · 13/10/2023 21:50

I don't believe in violence but that so warrants a punch. So I chose hyperemisis in my first pregnancy, and I chose a twin pregnancy and severe pelvic pain that left me bedridden the second time. Silly me.

LeavesOnTrees · 13/10/2023 21:58

I went for the several months of nausea option. Thought it sounded fun.

Was hoping to start a new trend with varicose veins, but that didn't really work out.

londonmummy1966 · 13/10/2023 22:01

Email her a summary of the meeting "for the record" and quote her on this. THen watch for the frantic back peddalling

What kind of pregnancy did you choose?

I chose to get really fat (because there were concerns about my baby’s weight - which I also chose - and I did everything in my power to make sure they were born healthy).

Naturally, I also chose my birth experience which was a nearly 4 day long induction followed by an emergency C-section.

She is one of the worst kinds of woman.

Minnie68 · 13/10/2023 22:06

Did anyone choose piles btw? I was tempted…

Starlightstarbright2 · 13/10/2023 22:09

Myneighboursarewankers · 13/10/2023 18:54

I chose 3 pregnancies worth of hypremisis 🤷‍♀️ vomiting 40 times a day for 6 months per pregnancy just sounded like a dream 🙃

I chose this kind of pregnancy too..

I tried for nearly 4 years for my Ds … I can’t believe I didn’t plan a sickness free pregnancy 🙄

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 13/10/2023 22:11

I chose all day sickness too OP. Valid choice there.

I think the highlight of that particular facet of pregnancy was having to pantomime that I was 'just pregnant' and not seriously ill, to a non English speaking colleague who came round a corner to find me on hands and knees in the middle of a lawn throwing up, before I'd actually told work I was pregnant. So that was nice for everyone involved.

This. Like that Noel Edmonds shit about how sickness is because you have the wrong attitude.

What field of work are you in? Does she know anything at all about biology?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 13/10/2023 22:13

Does she also say my personal favourite

'you're / she's pregnant, not ill!'

in an exasperated tone at every opportunity?

MumApril1990 · 13/10/2023 22:14

I chose to have HG, then I chose a 30 hr labour and episiotomy

positive37 · 13/10/2023 22:14

Oh right yes I chose to have an incompetent cervix.

Moron!

Nomoreafterthisone · 13/10/2023 22:20

It seems sickness is a popular choice. My first pregnancy didn't get me enough attention as it wasn't dramatic enough so had to ramp it up this time.

Some of these replies are making me laugh and some are making me realise how hard-core pregnancy is as are the women who go through it!
