Empty sac at 5 weeks?

Mamalog · 13/10/2023 15:07

I went for a scan the other day due to suspected eptopic. I was 5 weeks exactly (confirmed with ovulation so I am 10000% certain on dates.) The pregnancy is in the right place however only the gestational sac was visible, no yolk sac.
The gestational sac was measuring 7.5mm, which I’ve looked online and is about right for 5 weeks. However some websites say the yolk sac should be visible by 5 weeks, but others say that yolk sac is not visible until nearer to 5.5 weeks… like 5+2 onwards. I have another scan in 10 days.

just wondered if anyone had experienced this and gone on to have another scan and seen baby and heartbeat etc.

Or if there’s any sonographers or someone here who knows what should be seen at 5w0d!! 🙏🏼

Hello 5 weeks is very early, when I had a scan at 5+1 there was just a sac and what they thought could be the start of the fetal pole. I had another at 5+6 and they saw a heartbeat.
I had many early scans because I had bleeding and epu were checking that out - I had a hematoma that causes the bleeding.
I am 15+4 weeks now. Try not to worry 5 weeks is very early to see anything!

Mummyofone2021 · 13/10/2023 16:51

Hi, I had an early scan today too 😊 I had constant pain down one side and EPU wanted to scan me to rule out an ectopic (I had a chemical pregnancy a couple of months ago ). I’m 5 weeks and 4 days today and all they could see was the gestational sac, nothing else. I was quite relieved that it’s all in the right place but still anxious as I’ve got to go back again next Friday to see if the yolk sac has appeared. Hope everything goes well with you 😊

Mamalog · 13/10/2023 19:24

@LittleDoveLove thank you for your reassurance and congratulations 🥳

@Mummyofone2021 I hope your scan goes well, please update with how it goes! Mine is the following Monday after yours and I’m really nervous too! Praying everything will be ok for us 🙏🏼

@Mamalog of course I will, just a long old wait for us both for next Friday and Monday 🙄. Sending lots of hope and love in the mean time 😊

Mamalog · 13/10/2023 20:45

@Mummyofone2021 I’ve done a lot of research this evening and seen loads of posts from people who were in our position with an empty sac and then they went back a couple of weeks later and saw a healthy baby with strong heartbeat so I’m feeling more hopeful now ❤️
🤞🏼 for us!

Hi everyone, I’m in a similar position. From my last period I’m 6 weeks pregnant. However I ovulate late (day 19 of a 27/28 day cycle). I went for an early scan today as I had a tiny bit of bleeding and they could only see an empty sac. They’re testing my bloods again on Saturday to make sure my levels are increasing. But does anyone know about the whole late ovulation thing? As from last period it’s 6 weeks but it’s only really been just over 3 weeks since conception. So I’m hoping I’m actually only technically 5 weeks because I ovulate just under a week after the average person. Ugh!

Samanabanana · 19/10/2023 14:03

Scan at 5 weeks showed sac but no yolk or fetal pole. Scan at 7 weeks showed fetal pole and heartbeat. Sounds absolutely normal to me, fingers crossed for you!

Potentialmadcatlady · 19/10/2023 14:07

My empty sac/blighted ovum is sitting playing games on his ps4 beside me….
I asked how long I could wait before doing anything medically and they said a week.. a week later they found his heartbeat…

Avocado098 · 19/10/2023 14:09

@Samanabanana thank you so much! That rly puts my mind at ease. I’ve been going mad thinking about it. Fingers xd xx

Mamalog · 19/10/2023 18:17

Thank you @Samanabanana and @Potentialmadcatlady that’s amazing to hear, I’m hoping that’s the case for me! My scan is on Monday so just counting down the days now 🤞🏼

@Mamalog Just an update for you, I had my scan today my gestational sac had grown and I have something inside the sac. Unfortunately there seems to be some abnormalities with it so I’ve got to go back for another scan next Monday for a definitive result on whether the pregnancy is viable or not. It’s blind sided me a bit as I’ve had terrible sickness and nausea so I was starting to think that it would all be okay.

I hope your scan goes well on Monday and you have good news on yours

xx

Mamalog · 20/10/2023 18:37

I’m really sorry to hear about this, I’m praying so hard for you that everything is ok on your next scan ❤️

Hi I’m in exact same position as you with the cycle and 6 weeks pregnant. I’ve had positive tests for the last 2 weeks but today the tests are showing as negative on CB digital or v v v faint positive on an internet cheapie. How did you get seen by EPU?? I rang them today but said I had to have GP referral. Couldn’t get a GP appointment and feeling such despair.

Mamalog · 23/10/2023 13:13

Just an update incase anyone comes across this thread with the same issues in the future. Went for a scan today and saw baby with a strong heartbeat 💓 so relieved and happy 🥰

@Mamalog that’s great news! Congratulations. I bet you’re so happy.

can I ask how many weeks you are now?

my hcg levels are rising as expected and have another scan on Thursday, I’ll be 6 wks 3 days so hopefully can see more than an empty sac!

Mamalog · 23/10/2023 13:40

@Avocado098 thank you! I am 6 weeks and 5 days exactly today. From my last menstrual period I should be further on but I knew that I ovulated late (confirmed with ovulation testing) so I knew I’d measure behind!

im sure at your scan at 6+3 you will be able to see baby and heartbeat too I have everything crossed for you 😊

@Mamalog so so happy for you!! Hope you can relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy! 💕

Avocado098 · 23/10/2023 17:40

@Mamalog thank you so much. I’m in exactly the same boat with the late ovulation. I think we’ll only be a few days apart. Thank you!! Congratulations again xx

Nicolad92 · 15/03/2024 10:13

Hi everyone,

i know this is an older post wondering if anyone can help.
I went for a scan to rule out and ectopic pregnancy internal scan showed gestational sac but nothing inside nurse advised this is normal and have no concerns baby in right place epu were realpy reasuring but am back in 2 weeks to see growth and further put my mind at ease. Woke up yesterday morning to some light spotting not enough to mark a towel or anything however lasted all day and went away night time. Woke up this morning and its like a pinkish colour all of this is only when wiping. Spoke to epu who advised they could not tell me if i am going to misscarry as its hard to tell at this stage and that at times its normal. Also just to keep an eye out if it gets heavier or not. I have pcos and period jan previous period was in September so i am totally in shock this has happened however very very happy. I just wanted to know if anyone simular in my situation and everything was ok? Scan in 12 days so keeping all my fingers crossed.

thanks
💖

Avocado098 · 15/03/2024 14:14

@Nicolad92 hi Nicola, this happened to me as well, I had bleeding on and off for a few weeks when I first found out, sometimes pinkish, sometimes brown & once had a small clot (so thought the worst) however everything was absolutely fine. I also had an empty sac to begin with but when we went back a couple of weeks later there was a fetal pole and yolk sac. I know it’s happened to my friend too and sometimes we are being scanned too early. I was also told that bleeding in early pregnancy is common just not really spoken about. I hope you’re ok, please keep us updated xx sending positive vibes your way! X

TheShellBeach · 15/03/2024 14:17

@Nicolad92
The exact same thing happened to me and all was well!
She's grown up now lol.

TheShellBeach · 22/03/2024 21:22

How are things, OP?

Mamalog · 05/04/2024 08:22
