Severe nausea

I’m currently 6 weeks +4 days pregnant, I’ve been suffering with severe nausea for 1 week already, it’s just getting worse everyday. Struggling to eat which is worrying because I’m so skinny anyway so Im terrified to lose weight. I’ve been taking prochlorperazine/stemetil which I think is just stopping me from vomiting but the nausea is 24/7 and is absolutely debilitating. I’ve tried everything from ginger sweets/ biscuits/ tea, eating little and often but nothing is helping, if anything it’s making the nausea worse. I’m having to call in sick at work, I just feel like it’s never going to end. Did anyone else suffer from nausea from 5 weeks and when did it end for you?? I feel like I need a timeframe just to get me through this. I’ve been searching and people say it “peaks” at 9/10 weeks I was just really hoping it would stop much sooner.

Go back to your GP and see if you can try other medication combinations.

It’s awful though, you have my full sympathies. The only thing that made me feel slightly less bad was constantly eating carbs, but everyone is different.

Raysalexandra · 14/09/2023 16:16

ive been to my GP and they prescribed cyclizine but that gave me awful side effects, I’ve also tried metoclopramide but that caused diarrhoea so the only thing that I can take that doesn’t give me any unwanted side effects is the prochlorperazine. Yes I’m the same, even the thought of eating meat, fish, veg etc makes me gag. I can handle carbs in very small amounts but the nausea is just overwhelming. When did it end for you?

I'm so sorry, this sounds horrible. My nausea wasn't like this but in the first 10 weeks or so I didn't want anything healthy - no veg, fish, wholegrains. I lived off McDonald's fries and nuggets. Don't force yourself to eat food you don't want. Just eat whatever you fancy as soon as you fancy it.

I actually found that eating when I felt sick made me feel better, but you may be feeling too sick to do that.

Are you keeping fluids down? Make sure you keep going to your GP about this. They need to keep an eye on you if you're already very slim.

DuploTrain · 14/09/2023 16:26

It was about 12 weeks when I felt better… sorry.

A lot of people do start feeling better at 9-10 weeks though because the hormones change as the placenta starts to take over.

cptartapp · 14/09/2023 16:32

DC1 I was like that until about four months with several weeks off sick. Used to wake in the night to vomit.
DC2 not as severe but nauseous up until the end. Several weeks off sick again. Lost about a stone I think. Baby was fine.
Hideous feeling. Like being poisoned 24/7.

TheBirdintheCave · 14/09/2023 16:33

Week 19 was when it ended for me though it did improve a lot around week 15. I hope yours passes sooner.

It's funny. I'm 5 weeks today and would now give anything to feel as ill as I did with my son 😅

Slightlydustcovered · 14/09/2023 16:38

I vomited so much in the first trimester and lost so much weight I was hospitalised. I'm so sorry it's hell, keep on the meds and try carbs. Keep your fluids up if you can. Nothing to add apart from massive sympathy mine got a little better at 16 weeks but I was still sick until the births. Magically lifts when baby gets here mind which is a massive relief.

Raysalexandra · 14/09/2023 16:45

@Slightlydustcovered oh bless you that is absolutely awful. Thank god that’s over for you now. Thank you, I can’t wait until my second trimester, im counting down the days!

Raysalexandra · 14/09/2023 16:47

@TheBirdintheCave that’s the thing, if you don’t feel nauseous you worry don’t you, but when you do you just want it to go! Yes I hope it passes sooner too. Counting down the days to my second trimester! Congrats to you on your second baby!

Whataretheodds · 14/09/2023 16:49

I know not everyone's does but mine was much better after 13 weeks and now not an issue. Fingers crossed!

These things don't make it go away but they definitely help:
Fresh air
Enough sleep
Sipping cold drinks - citrus or cucumber
Carbs and salt
Others on here have sworn by green apples!

Welcometotheocbitch · 14/09/2023 16:50

So sorry you’re suffering, it’s awful and honestly one of the worst times of my life it was so hard! Mine was weeks 6-13, and eating carbs took the edge off SLIGHTLY and going too long without food definitely made it worse. No advice I’m sorry, I didn’t find the medication to ease the nausea either.

Raysalexandra · 14/09/2023 16:51

@Whataretheodds thank you so much for the advice!

@Welcometotheocbitch i honestly feel like I’m such a wimp but it really is one of the worst things I’ve had to deal with! I hate feeling/being sick at the best of times but this is just 24/7! Counting down the days to my second trimester!

Pip1402 · 14/09/2023 16:58

Oh god it's awful isn't it. I agree with pp that having an empty stomach makes it so much worse so do try to eat little and often if you can, even if you just nibble a cracker every 5 minutes. I also found that regularly sipping water with lots of ice in helped. You could ask your GP about Phenergan as another medication to try. It makes me very sleepy so I'd take it in the evening. You're not a wimp, it's truly horrible.

0021andabit · 14/09/2023 16:58

So sorry you’re going through this. I had horrible sickness in all 3 of my pregnancies.

Youve had good advice from others but just to
add, resting as much as you possibly can - never stand when you could be sitting down, never sit when you could be lying down. I found lying down listening to podcasts/ audiobooks restful & distracting. Screens made me worse.

Those travel sickness bands helped a bit too.

I’d say it got better around 12-13wks. I know it feels like forever but it will pass

SnapdragonToadflax · 14/09/2023 16:58

It's horrible, I really feel for you. For me it started at about six weeks, got significantly better around 14, and was gone by 20... although it did come back towards the end, but nowhere near as bad. I spent weeks 9 and 10 in bed as it was the only place that didn't make me gag.

Salt was the only thing that helped me, so I constantly sucked crisps. Not at all healthy, but I had so many food aversions I just figured eating something was fine. I couldn't face anything green until well into my second trimester. I was completely off sugar so biscuits would have made me vom.

Definitely see if there's any other drugs you can try. Travel wristbands might help. Get plenty of sleep, mine was always worse by the end of the working week. It's awful feeling ill basically all the time, but know it does end. I'm not doing it again though...

Pip1402 · 14/09/2023 16:59

Oh yes, agreed with @0021andabit tiredness makes it much worse too, I'd forgotten that! The Phenergan can be helpful in getting a good night's sleep. Rest and sleep as much as you possibly can.

Welcometothehumanrace · 14/09/2023 17:10

It's absolutely brutal you have my full sympathy. I was completely unprepared in my first pregnancy, I never knew how bad it could be. I had it 6-20 weeks. I am pregnant again now and taking the same medication as you but still been incredibly ill. At week 16 now and starting to improve ever so slightly, so probably looking at 20 weeks again by time it goes.
Others offer good advice. Salty things, Ice cold water, at least one good nap a day. Anything fried or heavy is a no-go for me.
It doesn't help it's minimised a lot by being called "morning sickness" or someone telling you to eat a cracker before you get out of bed and you'll be fine. So sorry op, it's rough but will start to improve eventually!

Raysalexandra · 14/09/2023 17:32

@Pip1402 thank you! It makes me feel so much better than so many other women can relate and understand how I feel. I’ll definitely keep trying to avoid having an empty stomach. How many weeks did you suffer?

OP posts:
Raysalexandra · 14/09/2023 17:35

@Welcometothehumanrace oh my, I can’t believe you had it all the way up to 20 weeks, you poor thing. This is my first pregnancy, you’re right, I’m so unprepared too. I never knew you could feel this bad. People always told me you just vomit in the morning and you’re fine…. That’s not the case at all, the nausea it 24/7! I try to eat a ginger biscuit or rich tea before I get out of bed but it makes me gag. I’ve tried gaviscon too. I can only just handle carbs. I’m so happy for you that you’re starting to improve slightly by 16 weeks, fingers crossed it won’t last until 20 like your previous pregnancy. Thank you for your advice.

OP posts:
Raysalexandra · 14/09/2023 17:37

@SnapdragonToadflax thank you so much for your advice. I’m so sorry you went through this. I’m the same, all I can eat is small amounts of carbs. I agree, I will never be able to go through this again! I might take a look at the travel wristbands!

OP posts:
Raysalexandra · 14/09/2023 17:39

@0021andabit thank you so so much for your advice! I’m so sorry you suffered this through 3 pregnancies!

OP posts:
LindorDoubleChoc · 14/09/2023 18:31

I did find some relief from the travel wristbands. They have a little ball on the inside which puts pressure on a point on the inside of your wrist which is supposed to help with nausea. Keeping hydrated is more important than food at this point so small sips of water as often as you can.

Raysalexandra · 14/09/2023 19:04

@LindorDoubleChoc thank you! I have just ordered some travel wristbands so fingers crossed they help. I’ll definitely try stay hydrated :)
