Accidentally ate raw cooked papaya

Hi, I’m currently 24+1 weeks pregnant and I accidentally ate raw cooked papaya yesterday! I can feel my baby kicking and moving just fine but I’m really panicking because i have heard raw papaya is harmful during pregnancy. My next scan is at next Saturday. I hope everything is fine, I have had a miscarriage and an ectopic last year.

Probably makes sense to consult a GP or call 111 for advice.

Yes, papaya in pregnancy is safe, as long as the papaya is ripe. However, papaya for a pregnant lady should be avoided if the papaya is green or semi-ripe. This is because an unripe papaya has a lot of latex. According to studies, uterine contractions might be brought on by this concentrated type of latex.

I had no idea!

Smartiepants79 · 09/09/2023 18:34

I have never heard this!
Was it ripe? I would think that you’d have to eat quite a lot of raw papaya for this to be an issue though.
Try not to worry. It does say it’s only a concern during the 1st trimester also. You’re past that.

chatenoire · 09/09/2023 18:39

Unhelpful answer, but people cook papaya?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/09/2023 18:41

I'm confused - how can it be both raw and cooked?!

Monkeytapper · 09/09/2023 18:41

What’s raw cooked papaya?, raw or cooked?

Zerin123 · 09/09/2023 18:41

Yes, it was like a stir fried mixed veg!

Do you mean ripe cooked papaya?

Zerin123 · 09/09/2023 18:43

It was unripe and stir fried.

So not raw?, I’m confused 🫤

Why are you confused? She’s explained she meant unripe but cooked.

OP I think it’s fine, it would have been a massive amount and you aren’t in the first trimester. Contact your midwife in concerned but don’t panic.

Thank you! That's really confusing me!

It was unripe and stir fried.

Oh, I see. Perhaps the cooking may have broken it down and made it more safe?

Monkeytapper · 09/09/2023 18:51

@TeaKitten I’m confused because she said raw and cooked in title and in first post and in the OP said she was worried as she had heard raw papaya is dangerous.

Beginningless · 09/09/2023 18:52

I’ve never heard of this and a bit of google suggests it’s an American idea, NHS sites do not mention it is a good to avoid. The American sites mention it say the research is scant and it’s an ‘avoid it to be on the safe side’ recommendation. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

Zerin123 · 09/09/2023 18:52

@TeaKitten thanks.

The link says pineapple has the same effect. As someone who ate 5 pineapples in a day for 3 days to try to bring on labour when overdue (without success), I’d say a small amount is safe. I suspect risks are for much, much larger quantities.

This, it can’t be raw and cooked. Does make sense.

Skodacool · 09/09/2023 19:05

‘Doesn’t’

menopausalbloat · 09/09/2023 19:05

I imagine you'll be absolutely fine.
I completely understand your anxiety though.

modgepodge · 09/09/2023 19:06

I have also never heard this!! My midwife gave me a long list of things to avoid (shark, swordfish…mr whippet) but I definitely don’t remember papaya being mentioned! I had a small amount while on holiday last week…hope I’m ok!!

Zerin123 · 09/09/2023 19:09

@Skodacool sorry for the confusion, I meant unripe and cooked.
