Accidentally ate raw cooked papaya

Hi, I’m currently 24+1 weeks pregnant and I accidentally ate raw cooked papaya yesterday! I can feel my baby kicking and moving just fine but I’m really panicking because i have heard raw papaya is harmful during pregnancy. My next scan is at next Saturday. I hope everything is fine, I have had a miscarriage and an ectopic last year.

@modgepodge Mr Whippet wouldn't appeal to me either Grin

I'd never heard of the papaya thing, happily tucked into Thai raw papaya salads during pregnancy with no ill effects. And yours was cooked ... I'm sure you'll be fine.

@Beginningless i also googled and found out that unripe papayas contain a chemical/enzyme called papain which can cause contractions and lead to premature labor or birth defect.

@modgepodge i hope so, thanks for the reassurance.

Although unripe, it's probable that the enzymes were broken down during cooking. Are you feeling ok, no after effects?

Zerin123 · 09/09/2023 19:30

@Maireas i am feeling fine! just being paranoid and blaming myself for not being conscious enough.

Stay away from Dr Google. Giving yourself anxiety is more unhelpful than unripe cooked papaya.

Maireas · 09/09/2023 19:39

If you feel ok, that's good. As others have said, it does seem to be low risk. If, however, you become ill, obviously get help. However, it does sound unlikely.

You can cook papaya?! Isn’t that like cooking a melon or similar fruit?! Learn something new every day!

Yeh and apples, plums, apricots, cherries etc all contain cyanide. But you'd have to seriously go to town on your fruit consumption to experience cyanide poisoning from them.

Also, literally anybody can create a website and publish any old shit on the internet. Google doesn't fact check the results it shows you.

You need to be discerning about what you read and trust otherwise you will send yourself mad with worry for no reason.

😂

I can assure you I do not ordinarily eat dogs.

I lived in Central America for a few years and papaya was a staple. It was well known that papaya unripe was a threat to pregnancy and even used as a morning after pill kind of thing but I never heard of cooked and or ripe papaya causing pregnancy loss

In this sort of panicked situations I always try to think what would I say to a friend in this situation? I imagine you'd probably try to reassure them and say it's nothing to worry about. It's easy to panic but think about the facts, it was a small amount and you're not early on in pregnancy and you're feeling your baby moving. I'm sure everything is fine xx

I had a few Thai papaya salads whilst pregnant before reading you shouldn’t. Oops. All was fine. Don’t panic.
