Can I have 1 glass of Prosecco at 4 weeks pregnant?

Just that really…just found out that I’m pregnant and I’m invited to my best friends wedding on Sunday when I will be 4 weeks + 3 days. I’m not planning on drinking during my pregnancy but I’m in two minds if one glass of Prosecco to cheer the couple would be ok, considering that it’s so early days.

To be honest I wouldn’t as it’s so early.

jb23newmum · 08/09/2023 19:19

Some people don’t know they are pregnant that early on and drink and then go on to have healthy babies

juicelooseabootthishoose · 08/09/2023 19:20

Its a very personal decision. Clearly drinking to excess in pregnancy is a bad idea. Personally i don't believe you have to abstain entirely. I think a glass for this purpose is absolutely fine. Or the odd small glass with a meal.

But some people will come on and say the opposite. Its your pregnancy and you do what feels right for you and your baby.

Damnedidont · 08/09/2023 19:21

There is no way of knowing for sure. For some people one glass is enough to cause fetal alcohol syndrome. Others seem to drink their heads off and get away with it. According to the lecture I attended given by a specialist there is no safe amount. But find a reputable source and do some research

Arniesleftleg · 08/09/2023 19:22

I was drinking gin and tonic at 4 weeks. I didn’t realise I was pregnant. It never did me any harm. I’m sure a small glass of Prosecco is fine but each to their own. Bear in mind women used to drink pints of Guinness years ago and many of them had strong hardy babies.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 08/09/2023 19:22

Yes its fine to have 1.

But you'll get tonnes of people on here saying yabu.

mambojambodothetango · 08/09/2023 19:23

I would. But just one.

houselikeashed · 08/09/2023 19:25

If it helps, I did not know I was pregnant until 9 weeks. Tests kept showing negative which was weird. I went to two parties and got quite drunk at each. 😱
DC turned out perfectly fine.

But I would't recommend doing that obviously!
Personally, I'd have a few sips at the toasts, but that's all.

JC89 · 08/09/2023 19:27

I would ask if there's a non-alcoholic option, there has been at all the weddings I've been to.

My reasoning is that lots of pregnancies sadly end in miscarriage (for all sorts of reasons, and for no reason). If that happened to me and I had had a drink, I would always wonder if that had caused it (even though I know there could be many other reasons) - and miscarriage is bad enough without added guilt!

Google National FASD.org.uk
Or go with the limited experience of random mumsnetters. The choice is yours

That first line can’t be true surely? Sounds like a load of rubbish. One glass of anything would not be enough to cause FAS. FAS is caused by someone drinking heavily and to excess throughout their pregnancy.

OP I wouldn’t do it but I’m not a big drinker. I wouldn’t judge you for it though and I certainly don’t think it would do any harm at this stage. The placenta isn’t even formed yet! My sister had a single glass of Prosecco on her birthday when she was 7 weeks pregnant and all was fine.

as a PP has said if anything goes wrong which it could as it’s so early would you think back to the alcohol? I don’t think it would be related but it’s all about how you would deal with it.

Berlinlover · 08/09/2023 19:37

I wouldn’t.

fairyfluf · 08/09/2023 19:38

It's your choice. No one else can tell you it will be ok or it will be not ok. Read the research. Decide yourself.

Whataretheodds · 08/09/2023 19:38

I'd be less inclined to drink in 1st trimester.

Lots of women drink at 4 weeks because they don't know they're pregnant.

Only you can decide whether you'll worry about it or not.

Not drinking really isn't a big deal. If you must, can you have half a glass? You might find you don't actually want it.

This. I drank until 20 weeks not knowing I was pregnant. Big healthy baby. I k ow it's not the same for everyone. But if I'd of known I wouldn't have drank apart from 1 every now and then

Montydin · 08/09/2023 19:42

I wouldn’t, it’s more harmful in the first trimester than the later stages. I’m sure plenty of people have drunk and things have turned out fine, but they might not do, and if drinking was a factor in the miscarriage they would never know that anyway. I think if you go on to miscarry there’s a danger of blaming yourself.

There will surely be a non alcoholic option?

Theres no evidence that very light drinking causes FASD

However equally it has been determined there is no safe limit of alcohol consumption for the unborn. Therefore people make statements like that above despite the lack of evidence in research.

Its natural that if anything were wrong, particularly a miscarriage, the guilt would be immense even though logically and rationally it wouldnt be anyones fault and so OP you need to just think about how you feel about it all

fancyfrogs · 08/09/2023 19:44

I'd probably have a couple of sips or carry one around at a drinks reception or whatever if it's the issue of not wanting to tell people or cause suspicion. Its a personal choice I suppose. I drank a few when I was around that stage with DS, because I didn't know. He is fine, but as soon as I found out I was pregnant I didn't do it again. It's a risk you need to weigh up yourself

StressedToDeathhhh · 08/09/2023 19:45

I wouldnt at 4 weeks, I had a small glass a few times from about 34 weeks with my younger two, midwife said it was fine at that stage. But early on I wouldn't even drink tea

jellytable · 08/09/2023 19:46

Baby doesn't have a placenta connected to your blood supply at the moment. One glass is fine. Toast to your future abstinence!

Justfoundoutthat · 08/09/2023 19:49

Thanks all. Yes, thinking about it, probably better if I don’t. My initial thought was that many people wouldn’t even know that they’re pregnant at 4 weeks. But that’s irrelevant because I do know and if something does go wrong, I’d blame myself.

I wouldn’t because I’m so anxious about everything!
but my mom did with my sister (cravings for champagne) and she’s the tallest, healthiest,, smartest, straights A’s all life, top uni degrees, most creative, musical, athletic, best behaved, most successful etc etc 😂
she was healthy with me and I’m rubbish at everything 😂

FatandRoundBouncingontheGround · 08/09/2023 19:52

It would be fine. Baby is still using yolk sac and not attached to your blood supply.
But of course up to you.

fancyfrogs · 08/09/2023 19:57

Forgot to add to my post - congratulations 😊

coolkatt · 08/09/2023 19:57

don't do it, if god forbid anything bad happens u will blame yourself wondering.
