Can I have 1 glass of Prosecco at 4 weeks pregnant?

Just that really…just found out that I’m pregnant and I’m invited to my best friends wedding on Sunday when I will be 4 weeks + 3 days. I’m not planning on drinking during my pregnancy but I’m in two minds if one glass of Prosecco to cheer the couple would be ok, considering that it’s so early days.

I had a glass of wine at 6 weeks

Montydin · 08/09/2023 19:58

Also have you had Prosecco since you’ve been pregnant? I thought I would miss wine but a whiff of it makes me want to throw up!

No placenta yet so won't be sharing a blood flow yet and will be getting everything from the yolk. One will be fine.

Baby doesn't have a placenta connected to your blood supply at the moment. One glass is fine. Toast to your future abstinence!

This is what I was going to say once I'd read the thread. It's fine.

Lighttodark · 08/09/2023 20:38

I have read that alcohol can still pass through to baby before placenta attaches.

Personally I chose not to drink during my pregnancies. Stopping drinking wasn't a problem for me when it was for the benefit of my children.

I enjoyed a drink agsin after my children were born but not while I was pregnant with them.

Cas112 · 08/09/2023 21:02

Is there really a need just for one? I don't get it

saffronsoup · 09/09/2023 10:58

There is a lot of research that disagrees with the opinions on here that alcohol is fine during the first few weeks.

I am not sure why anyone would want to risk causing brain damage to their fetus. If you don't want the baby, abort it. Don't take risks that you know could cause permanent damage. The first 3 months of pregnancy are the riskiest for alcohol consumption and fetal development.

Alcohol use in first 3-4 weeks of pregnancy may lead to permanent brain changes in offspring

Drinking alcohol in the first 3-4 weeks of pregnancy - a time when many women are unaware they are pregnant - may alter gene functioning in the brains of offspring, research shows.

There is no way of knowing for sure. For some people one glass is enough to cause fetal alcohol syndrome. Others seem to drink their heads off and get away with it. According to the lecture I attended given by a specialist there is no safe amount. But find a reputable source and do some research

One glass of wine in pregnancy does not cause FAS. Don't scaremonger.

Scalessayeek · 09/09/2023 11:12

I had two occasions I had a glass of Prosecco whilst further along (3rd trimester). At 4 weeks, the baby is feeding from the yolk sack, not a placenta so I would think this would have less affect.

You’ll find tonnes of people that didn’t realise they were pregnant who had a few drinks in the early days with no issues.

It doesn’t come risk free but it is your choice to make.

Emsxox · 09/09/2023 11:26

I was bridesmaid for my sister in law when I was 5 weeks pregnant and hadn’t told anyone I just pretended I was drinking so I had fizzy j20 in wine glasses and I had ‘bucks fizz’ while getting ready which I just put orange juice alone in my glass
personally I wouldn’t risk it as it’s quite early on but it’s all personal preference xx

MariePaperRoses · 09/09/2023 11:26

Just have a soft drink.

titchy · 09/09/2023 11:30

At four weeks the foetus will still be using the yolk as it's nutrient source. The placenta won't take over till week 8 at which point anything you eat/drink will be passed on.

PerfectPairOfPlums · 09/09/2023 11:31

I drank heavily on My wedding day and start of my honeymoon when I didn't know I was pregnant (about 4-5 weeks) Baby was fine but I wouldn't do it if I knew.

saffronsoup · 09/09/2023 11:36

Those of you who think fetal development can not be impacted by alcohol until the placenta is fully functional need to do some research.

The outcomes are not all major, could be mild attentional, behavioural, and learning difficulties later in life. Many people do not connect their kids issues later on with their alcohol consumption in pregnancy.

Alcohol in the early weeks is far from risk free.

PackBacker · 09/09/2023 11:37

I wouldn’t and didn’t, I’d have a lemonade in a Prosecco glass.

She never said she didn't want the baby or that she was considering an abortion, don't be such a dick.

I had a cider at 5 weeks as I thought my periods had arrived hence thought it was safe to drink. Found out few days later I was actually pregnant. If you don't want to drink whole glass you can always take a sip. Smile

pizzaHeart · 09/09/2023 11:43

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
I think it depends on your outlook : would you sit and overthink every tiny thing later and blame yourself and this glass of Prosecco? Or would you live your life normally?

By the way I’m weird overthinking type myself so I didn’t drink during pregnancy at all.

Ollifer · 09/09/2023 11:47

I'm pretty sure it'd be fine. But for the sake of one glass of fizz when you're this early I just wouldn't bother, not worth the risk really is it? Plenty of time to make up for it after the baby arrives and you can have a glass whenever you want.

Tailfeather · 09/09/2023 11:49

I used yo nurse a drink as my pregnancy was high risk, so I didn't want to tell anyone, or I'd have a lemonade and pretend it was G&T or I drove so I could blame it on that. A few sips isn't going to cause any harm.

Where did you get that from?

Florenceatemycake · 09/09/2023 11:55

This thread made me dig out my copy of Expecting Better by Emily Oster. It's a really good, evidence based pregnancy advice book and the chapter on alcohol is extremely illuminating.

Rather than asking on MN, where people can be quite extreme and sanctimonious, I'd have a read of this.

porridgeisbae · 09/09/2023 11:56

I risked a drink once a week when pregnant, but both my pregnancies ended in early miscarriages. So in your position I wouldn't risk it. You'll get used to it x

She never said she didn't want the baby or that she was considering an abortion, don't be such a dick.

If someone is knowingly and intentionally taking risks that can lead to miscarraige, premature birth, stillbirth and permanent disability - then they clearly are ambivalent at best about the pregnancy.
