Polyhydramnios

Hi,

Long story short I got diagnosed with having polyhydramnios at around 28 weeks, I’ve been having scans to check the fluid and he’s also measuring on the 95th centile. I had a scan today at 35 weeks and he’s still on the 95th centile and my largest pool of amniotic fluid is 15.2cm the specialist said the fluid is large for his estimated fetal weight and she can’t rule anything out at birth even though from all the scans he looks normal.

I’m really worrying myself that something is wrong, has anyone had a similar experience where they’ve been told this and baby has been okay at birth? I’ve also had an MRI sand amniocentesis during pregnancy for another reason and they all came back ‘normal’.

Anyone able to help oP?

GoodVibesHere · 17/09/2023 17:17

I had polyhydramnios with both DC. With my second I was told baby was measuring very large, high percentile. However, DC was born a very normal weight and nowhere near 95th percentile. I had a section, in the theatre they did run some tests on my DC immediately at birth but both were 100% healthy.

Oh and when the Drs broke my waters for me the amount of fluid was insane! It went everywhere, all over the bed and floor and they needed a mop and bucket!! I literally felt myself deflate.

spoonfuladay · 17/09/2023 17:28

I've got a big baby and slightly high fluid.. I'm an older mum as well.

Did your belly look big?

Pennyroses · 17/09/2023 18:38

I had polyhydromnios with my first ds, wasn't even picked up on until they broke my waters and I literally flooded the room! It was a LOT of water and my belly deflated so much I panicked where the baby had gone 😂 he was born on 91st centile at 9lbs 2oz, he was completely healthy. The only problem was it completely ruined my belly, lots of stretch marks and saggy skin afterwards. I should have known, whilst pregnant the skin on my belly was literally shiny it was so over stretched by all the water. I didn't develop it until about 36 weeks, I was a normal size and then just literally grew huge in the last few weeks!

Oh right is this why my stomach is so sore?!

GoodVibesHere · 17/09/2023 19:34

Yes my belly was absolutely huge. I mean ridiculously huge. I am small-framed with a small waist, so the skin had an awful lot of stretching to do! Sadly I was left with ruined skin - basically I now have excess crinkly saggy skin which I've had to accept. I am slim and look fine with clothes on, awful when naked and will never ever wear a bikini. I came to accept that though, as I had two beautiful wonderful children.

I found breathing difficult in the last few weeks of pregnancy as my lungs were squished with the pressure of the fluid, I slept sitting up because if I laid down breathing was difficult. Looking back, it was a fairly difficult pregnancy both times carrying all that excess fluid and was exhausting and uncomfortable.

spoonfuladay · 17/09/2023 19:51

When did they diagnose it @GoodVibesHere ?

Pennyroses · 17/09/2023 20:27

Yeh my bump was very sore and almost red and shiny!

I'm just the same. I'm only 5'2 and a size 6 but my belly is so ruined! I've always wondered if there's others out there like me, most my friends etc just seem to have normal stomachs again afterwards! Mines just a crinkly wrinkly mess 😭

It is rather gutting! Without the baggy, crinkly excess skin I would have a flat stomach! It took me years to realise that it was because of the massive amount of stretching my poor skin went through. I've seen plenty of women on the beach with 'normal' skin (even though they had children) so I realise now that it's not 'normal' to end up like this after having kids.

Pre-kids I had a naturally flat stomach. I'm not carrying any excess weight on me, just crinkly excess belly skin. No fat on me. It is really bad and I've never let anyone see it, I am ashamed of it in a way, I hate it but have had to accept it. I would never let my DC see it as I'm sure it would put them off ever having kids. I have never come across an image of post-child skin like mine, never seen it on anyone.

I’ve had it twice, both times severely and was being monitored twice a week. Consultant told me it was the most significant poly she’d ever seen which did a lot to calm my nerves (!!).

First time I had an small sized baby (a twin) and poly, which apparently is more worrying than a big baby and high fluid. I had an mri, 3 fetal heart scans and twice weekly checks. DS is 3.5 and totally healthy.

Second time I had a huge baby and high fluid. Again had super frequent scans but also had gestational diabetes which kinda explained the big baby/ fluid. DS has just turned 1 and is also healthy.

I genuinely thought baby would have a terrible problem the first time. In your shoes, after an amnio and scans not showing an issue, I would feel reassured. Have you been tested for gestational diabetes?

Yep no GD.

Twins and GD can cause it.

"I genuinely thought baby would have a terrible problem the first time. In your shoes, after an amnio and scans not showing an issue, I would feel reassured. Have you been tested for gestational diabetes?"

What do you mean by amino? I had a NIPT.

Lovely234 · 17/09/2023 21:48

I had it with my second son, found at 20 week scan and carried through to the end. No cause was found, and he was perfect at birth, so just one of those things. It was so nerve wracking though

Massivescreen · 17/09/2023 21:50

I was diagnosed with this at very late stages (35 weeks? 38 weeks? Can’t quite remember) with my third child and they also said they thought I had diabetes but too late to do anything, he was measuring huge, talked to me about risk of shoulder distoscia, did I want a c-section etc. I was scared shitless! In the end the birth was absolutely fine, and the baby wasn’t too big at all. I want to say 8lb 10 but I can’t quite remember! Good luck OP.

elliejjtiny · 17/09/2023 21:59

I had this with my 4th. Was measuring 52cm at 34 weeks and then 39cm a week later after my waters broke. I carried on gushing fluid for the next 2 days until I had a c-section and there was still loads of fluid. Dc4 was 7lb 2oz and was born with a cleft lip and palate which meant he wasn't swallowing enough of the amniotic fluid.

Are you the OP? If so, you said you had an amnio in your first post….

Did they not pick this up on the scans or a private 3D scan?

How is your Little bub now?

spoonfuladay · 17/09/2023 22:22

@anicecuppateaa no I searched for the condition and had similar to what OP posted. Didn't want to start a new thread, I'm not OP.

anicecuppateaa · 17/09/2023 22:47

Oh @spoonfuladay amnio is where they stick a big needle in and test amniotic fluid. It gives you a certain yes/ no for many genetic conditions, unlike a nipt which gives a high/ low probability but isn’t definite.

Fwiw I had a nipt too as the amnio apparently would have been a risk for the other twin. My consultant saw no structural issues on the scans so suggested a nipt. If she had seen potential issues I would have had the amnio.

Hope everything works out ok for you.

spoonfuladay · 17/09/2023 23:10

@anicecuppateaa did they test for anything else in addition to downs, Edward and the other condition?

LWestYorks · 18/09/2023 07:37

Hi ladies! Me who started the thread! I’m 37 weeks today, I had my last scan last week at 36 weeks and my largest pool we’re down to 12.9 (still large I know) so I’m booked in for a section on the 6th.

I have suffered with terrible anxiety throughout this pregnancy, I just want to see him now. Thank you for all the reassurance though on this thread :-)
