Induction to Baby, how long did it take you?

Hi all. I am being induced tomorrow morning due to being a week late. This is my first baby.

I was just curious, to all the Mums out there who have been induced, how long did it take you from being induced to delivering?

OP posts:

Only induction I had was third baby, waters broken and drip started at midday, baby born with forceps at 8pm. Didn't have an epidural until they wanted to do a forceps delivery. By the time they started the epidural I couldn't sit down because his head was in the way!

I was 40+1 but I had gdm and was boarder line pre ecamplsia. First baby too. Induced using pesserie at 5pm on the Monday. Pesserie was removed 8pm Tuesday after nothing. I had the gel over night and nothing. Gel again Wednesday morning and again nothing. Wednesday evening they decided to book me in for a csection Thursday morning as i was done. I was exhausted, physically and mentally. I had my son at just before 6pm Thursday evening by csection and it was perfect.

4hrs 59 minutes 🤢 but I was already 3cms dilated and just needed my waters breaking.

USaYwHatNow · 27/08/2023 17:21

Also, forgot to add, I was 37 weeks and had pre eclampsia. With pre eclampsia generally labour tends to be a bit quicker!

ILookAtTheFloor · 27/08/2023 17:22

Don't feel like you have to agree to induction if you don't want to. You could go in for regular monitoring to reassure you and the hospital. It's normal to go to 42 weeks especially in a first pregnancy.

peonyjam · 27/08/2023 17:23

First baby and 39 weeks. 2cm when I arrived so had the balloon. 3cm by the next morning when it was removed. Then got stuck on the ward waiting for a space on labour ward for my waters to be broken for about 2 days. This was completely miserable. When I finally got there it turned out I was 5cm dilated and had been in labour without realising. My waters were broken and he arrived around 4 hours later with a minimal amount of the drip. So really it was very quick!

Lockdownmum1010 · 27/08/2023 17:23

First one was 18.5 hours from pessary going in to baby being born (was 41+ 6).

Second one was 3.5 hours from pessary to birth (39 weeks)

hulahoopqueen · 27/08/2023 17:26

First baby.
Gel went in at 12pm Saturday. Epidural in at 9pm.
I relaxed so completely that she "shot down the canal" (doctor's words) and got a bit stuck.
EMCS at 1.30am Sunday. she was born at 1.52am. We were out by 10am Monday.
All in all, (apart from the CS being quite such an emergency!) I'd do it all again!

5ish hours. Had a good sweep the day before, arrived at hosp for 11am, pessary at 12.30 which was removed by 2.30 as contractions were too intense. Baby was then born at 5.30pm.

Sunshineclouds11 · 27/08/2023 17:29

28 hours from first pessary until birth!

Good luck

YorkshireIndie · 27/08/2023 17:54

First baby three days but that included two days of them trying to convince things to happen. Day three my waters were broken and I was put on a drip. DS was born 10ish hours after my waters were broken.

DD was born 8hrs after my waters were broken and put on a drip. I was 3cm dilated which I think helped. There was talk about using a ballon to open my cervix but that was not needed in the end

Good luck! The best piece of advice I was given was that once you agree to be induced then you follow the pathway until the baby is born

am3017 · 27/08/2023 18:02

With my 1st i was induced at 4pm, contractions started at 11pm and delivered at 5:30am…I was 39+4 when I was induced.

I am a fast labourer though with my 2nd (not induced) from first contraction to delivery I was 5 hours.

Good luck!

Insheerpanic · 27/08/2023 18:06

5 days at 40+1 then had to have an emcs anyway! Hope all goes well for you x

ineedafairygodmother · 27/08/2023 18:08

First baby..... She was 10 days overdue, had the gel at 3pm, labour started at 9:30pm baby here at 2:30am so 11.5 hours from start to finish

ineedafairygodmother · 27/08/2023 18:10

Forgot to add, was home the following day by 3pm, so total of approx 25 hours in hospital

JustOneMoreBiscuit55 · 27/08/2023 18:10

Pessary inserted around midday, contractions started soon after and quickly intensified, but cervix wasn't dilating quick enough. Turns out I had hyperstimulation. Pessary removed around 10pm and given something to try and slow the contractions down but it didn't work. Cervix only got to 3cm but contractions almost constant and baby started getting distressed. Ended up with an emergency c-section and baby born just after 1am, so 13 hours from start to finish. After hearing all the stories, I was ready for the long wait so was very surprised it all happened so quickly!

HamBone · 27/08/2023 18:11

About 3 hours from being attached to the drip. I was put straight on a drip as DS was induced at 39 weeks due to DD being so big (and I had a rough time with her labor).

It bloody hurt, but the contractions were quick and there he was, yelling his head off!

Bookchildtable · 27/08/2023 18:12

37 weeks induced due to twins /plus medical complications.
5 hours from start to birth of second twin. It was a better experience than my singleton, spontaneous labour.

snoopy18 · 27/08/2023 18:14

Pessary in at 8:30pm or so. Things started pretty quickly. In the morning the pessary was removed.I was taken to delivery suite as was 6cm.Gas and air and I was in heaven 😂 Waters were broke & I had a beautiful delivery.Son arrived 2pm.Couldn’t have asked for a better labour / delivery. Good luck!

weegiemum · 27/08/2023 18:18

Induced at 36+6 with baby #3. 12 hours start to finish. Was very unfavourable at pessary but the same midwife did tell me later that your body "remembers" and just gets on. Will be different with baby #1.

Wishing you all the best in welcoming your baby xx

Same for me, @Bookchildtable DD’s birth was abit of a nightmare and I had to stay in hospital for a week afterwards as I was so weak.

I was home in 24 hours after DS’s induction!

PerspiringElizabeth · 27/08/2023 18:20

11 hours of nothing then 2cm-born in 40 mins. Not ideal as big tear (forceps) but all ended up OK.

10 days over, first baby, 1 pessary.

Good luck!

cinnamonbiscuit · 27/08/2023 18:32

First- was 40+3, induction started with pessary at 10am, was in active labour around midnight and baby was born 820am next day with forceps.

Second- was 39+2, had 36 hours of pessary and gels before cervix was anywhere near ready, waters broken by doctor after much struggling to reach them. Went on the drip at 6pm, was 6cm at 1030pm and baby came flying out at 11pm.

babyno2isdue · 27/08/2023 19:26

Induced at 38 weeks, 22nd December baby born 3am Christmas Day Grin although it ended in c-sec, I just couldn't go on any more with a failed epidural

Dyra · 27/08/2023 19:44

Two inductions. Both started at 37 weeks with gel pessaries. No contractions started, but cervix opened just enough for ARM, then drip.

First induction was started 10am Wednesday. Went to delivery suite 1am Thursday. Baby born vaginally 4pm the same day after 11.5 hours on the drip.

Second induction was started 11am Monday. Went to delivery suite 8am Friday(!). Baby born by C-section Saturday at 2am after ~14 hours (had a pause while waiting for an epidural). Baby was badly positioned (back to back, and trying to look up), causing failure to progress (only went from 2 to 5cm) and eventually distress. I don't blame the induction though. Just pure bad luck.

Best of luck for tomorrow.
