Are nursing chairs necessary?

Just wondering. They look clunky and hideous!

No. You can use any chair with some cushions to support your arms.

User65412 · 24/08/2023 11:30

Absolutely not! You just need a comfy chair and use cushions for support.

adagio · 24/08/2023 11:42

Nope, sofa or armchair, box set, bottle of water handy (ideally with a straw or sports cap as that’s easier to drink without disturbing the ‘is she asleep or still feeding’ baby - plus selection of cushions (ideally not your favourite expensive ones that match the sofa as they may get milk, sick and possibly poop on them).

It’s also lovely in the middle of the bed with lots of pillows to prop you .. boot DH out obviously so you have more space 😂

ahh happy memories 🥰

I really liked a chair I could rock in, the ikea ponang one does the job really nicely!

SnapdragonToadflax · 24/08/2023 11:50

No. Ikea Strandmon is perfect, really comfy and has arm and headrests. The stool is good for making nursing more comfy.

Caspianberg · 24/08/2023 11:53

Agree with ikea strandmon. We didn’t buy until Ds was almost 1 year, but I fed him in it before bed another 6 months and it’s a super comfortable chair for bedtime stories now.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/08/2023 11:55

Of course not. How do you think humanity survived without them?

WolfMother326 · 24/08/2023 13:25

I really wished I'd had a rocker or glider with my first, but we didn't have space in previous home, so I nursed in bed or on the couch, a feeding pillow really helped. We've now got an ikea poang chair which rocks a little and I hope to use with my 2nd in the corner of our bedroom as an extra option.

bakewellbride · 24/08/2023 13:35

Just go on fb marketplace. We got a beautiful rocking chair for £30.

Mangotango39 · 24/08/2023 14:02

I'm not getting one - I know I'll not sit in it for feeds. Bed and sofa for me x

SilverSpooooons · 24/08/2023 14:27

Not necessary at all no. But we had a lovely gliding chair with gliding footstool that was the most comfortable thing ever. We kept it for 10 years! I still miss it! If you do get one, invest and use it as a piece of furniture.

I found feeding in bed killed my back, even with tons of pillows.

I second the IKEA Strandmon. It was perfect. We had one in the nursery and I spent many, many hours feeding in it, day and night. Also a very nice armchair when you're done.

BananaSlug · 24/08/2023 15:41

Obviously not

CallingAtHoystonGreen · 24/08/2023 15:43

It just needs to be comfortable and line it with a massive warm blanket that you can wrap around you. I also found being in my bed killed my back and disturbed Dh, same when he tried that. The chair was much more comfy. I had a glider with a glider footstool too. For us we had a very poorly baby who needed much more care and that included holding them a lot more than we did our first child. You need to be comfortable, bottom line.

BlossomTheUnicorn · 24/08/2023 20:09

I had the IKEA poang and foot stool for first and will be using it for next baby too 😁 it bounces a little and I got cushions from dunelm to match babys nursery.

googledidnthelp · 24/08/2023 20:10

Nope but I loved ours and was worth every penny and then some of the £20 I paid for it or marketplace, sold it for the same.

UncleBobsUncle · 24/08/2023 20:18

It’s not necessary but it’s a nice to have. I’ve used it every day since by DD was born 3.5 years ago, currently sat on it breastfeeding my second child to sleep

yogasaurus · 24/08/2023 20:20

No, not at all.

fearfuloffluff · 24/08/2023 20:21

No. I have heavy boobs I had to hold up to feed, the arms of a chair would have got in the way.

Avoid if you get motion sick easily. I inherited a glider chair with matching gliding footstool. Sat in it once for 2 mins and wanted to barf. Bed was fine for us.

WhamBamThankU · 24/08/2023 20:31

I've got 3 kids and managed without one so I'd say go for it if you've got the money/space/want to try it

PurBal · 24/08/2023 20:34

My Victorian nursing chair is lovely. But I find it just as easy feeding cross legged on the floor.

Notimelikeyesterday · 24/08/2023 20:35

I massively regret not getting a rocking chair 😭😭😭
