Thrush and pregnant

So, I had some dryness down below as per previous posts and last night I wiped and saw I had stretchy discharge with a bit of pink in it. Called triage who said sounded like thrush as it can be further up and that I could treat it at home. I didn’t get any more discharge but can feel a little dry down there still. I did actually look last night and so did husband and there is yeast in my vagina as it’s gone white.

Midwife said that pessary are the best option as they treat infection whereas the cream can just keep bringing it back. I’m so uncomfortable about inserting the pessary in case I do it wrong and I don’t want to harm my baby (third trimester). I’m also confused as to which one I buy? Is it the one attached.

Please help, I’m stressed and worried, are there any other alternatives?

Hey! I'm in my third trimester too. I had thrush a couple weeks back and contacted doctor who prescribed me a weeks worth of pessaries to do every night. Apparently it's harder to get rid of thrush when pregnant that's why she prescribed a weeks worth. It's really easy and painless to insert you can't really do it wrong.

Hope that helps x

Do not buy, you get it free from sexual health clinic or doctor if you already got your exemption certificate. I had constant thrush with my both previous pregnancies. It would literally come back after 2-3 weeks from inserting pessary, it was really bad and strong, big green lumps and itchy. So better get it free as it's not cheap stuff. It didn't affect baby or my pregnancy, repeated pessary is the only way, this thrush is hormonally induced and in my case disapeared when I have birth.

What mg? I don’t know which is the right one.

I was given normal hard white pessaries that you insert overnight, so it has time to dissolve and do its job.

Moni81 · 24/08/2023 10:06

I think there is only one standard 500mg cenasten pessary, I got it in combi with cream but honestly cream ended up in bin as it's useless.

From123 · 24/08/2023 11:22

My midwife said to get the combined one but I’ll leave off the cream see how the pessary does then use cream if I need to.. still nervous of putting it to far up but I’ve just noticed a cottage cheese kind of discharge so needs sorting.

I had a 500mg pessary prescribed from the doctor, along with cream. She said it was a much stronger pessary so only 1 needed. It wasn’t the soft gel one.
She did tell me not to insert as far as usual, but to be honest I can’t remember how far she said.
I’m 35+3 now, this would have been about 5 weeks ago I think.

Moni81 · 24/08/2023 13:30

This cottage cheese like stuff can get worse if not treated in pregnancy. Mine turned yellow, greenish and pieces were humongous, could literally take it out with spoon 😬 not to mention discomfort. That was during my 2 pregnancies years ago, now about to give birth third time in my 40s and no thrush at all, I guess body changes.

From123 · 24/08/2023 16:26

Yup, mine looked yellow today.

not a lot of it but enough…

The normal 500mg pessary is waht you need and safe in pregnancy, just don't use the applicator and insert it like you would a non applicator tampon, just before bed.

From123 · 24/08/2023 17:33

I’ve never used a tampon, I’ve always used a pad which is why I’m concerned of putting it to far in!

Try to check it first with finger and really you can't put it too far up, into the cervix, it's rather large pessary. I went through 10 of them or more in each pregnancy and I would say there is more of an issue with it slipping down. That's why you do it before going to bed, also there is leaflet instruction in what position to insert pessary.

You wont put it in too far you would need incredibly long fingers to do that. Just put it in the entrance then use your index finger to push it in as far as you can. Honestly you will be fine and it wont cause baby any issues even if by some amazing fluke you managed to get it trough your cervix.

From123 · 24/08/2023 20:04

Also, do I need to shower before hand or can I insert as is as I showered this morning. This is all so confusing..

I don't think there is shower requirement to insert pessary, follow your usual routine 👍

Houseelf90 · 24/08/2023 20:40

@From123 I was only told to put it in just as I was going to bed, and the doctor recommended wearing underwear and I think a pad. I still managed to find some dry crumbs of the pessary in my bed in the morning, god knows how it escaped 🤣🙈

H44123 · 24/08/2023 20:58

I had a baby a few months ago and had thrush which I had no clue about until I had a stretch and sweep. Midwife told me to just get normal canestan but insert tablet with fingers not applicator. Just be aware chemist etc are not allowed to prescribe to pregnant women without a prescription. I had to ring the doctors and get a prescription several times to get the canestan. In the end I went to a smaller pharmacy with a male serving who had no clue and gave it to me. I had to take about 3/4 pessaries as it wouldn’t clear. I didn’t have normal thrush symptoms eg itching burning etc, I just kept getting told at my 3 stretch and sweeps i still had it!

@Houseelf90 @H44123 @Moni81 @NEMSparkle @courtney251

i struggled putting it up there where it’s so dry at the moment, partner said it looks like I’ve got in top and bottom of my vagina which is fantastic I managed to push it in slightly more when I stood up but I noticed the gel had already started dissolving.. I hope this works, I don’t wanna do another of these, I do have the cream aswell but was going to leave that off for a few days, considering trying natural yoghurt on a pad

@From123 I hope you get some relief from it 🤞🏼

YearoftheRabbit23 · 25/08/2023 05:46

I was plagued by thrush when pregnant. Had to use 500mg pessaries a few times. Top tip, before insertion coat it in lubricant, much easier! Also insert it before bedtime so it's less likely to work it's way out due to gravity.

If you get the 5 day course each pill is a lesser dose, I think 100mg spread over five days.

From123 · 25/08/2023 20:06

@H44123 @Houseelf90 @Moni81 @NEMSparkle @YearoftheRabbit23 @courtney251 update, sore down below seemed to stay in overnight but did have some in my wee overnight. It’s sore today, when is it meant to start working?

OP posts:
NEMSparkle · 25/08/2023 20:21

You may need more than 1 dose use the cream tonight and then see if you can get the hard pessary tomorrow to try, that might be more effective and easier to insert than the soft pessary.

From123 · 25/08/2023 20:25

I’ve just looked online it says symptoms should start to dissapear in two days, I’ll see this weekend, I’m not overly keen on putting this like that up me! I did it because the midwife said it should treat the infection. The cream I have is external, my thrush is hidden on the inside.. tempted to get some yoghurt.

OP posts:
NEMSparkle · 25/08/2023 20:28

It may be that the soft pessary just didn't go in enough. No harm in trying yoghurt might relive the symptoms for you tonight.

Moni81 · 25/08/2023 20:33

For me it did feel a bit sore, dried up next morning, I guess that's how it works. Give it couple of days and see if there is improvement in thrush symptoms.
