AIBU to expect maternity trousers to stay up more than 5 seconds?

moominsmummy · 28/02/2008 19:39

Surely there must be some trousers or jeans out there that actually stay up?

Mine all fall down - under the bump are totally hopeless, over the bump last a little longer but not much

I have a very pronounced low-carrying bump so don't know if this is the problem but am considering resorting to kaftans or dungerees (bleurgghh!!)

any recommendations??

Actually the on the bump ones are OK. I have fabulous linen trousers from H&M that have stretchy panel but it doesn't come right up over the bump and they stay up great. I keep longing for the weather to brighten up just a little as I don't think linen trousers (albeit black ones) are a great look in Feb!

And last preg there got to a point where I went for it and wore dungarees. Quite liberating!

I am on pg no.3 and still haven't found a solution. I walk round all day with the bottom of my jeans getting soaked in puddles, constantly hitching them up, and if I am carrying dd and can't hitch them up I look ike some kind of freak trying to do a really bad impression of the baggy trousers style with the crotch half way down my thighs.

And my pants are usually falling down too!

Can't wait to burn all my be out of maternity clothes!

Oh, don't get me started! Last preg I ended up with H&M over-bump jeans clipped to my bra with snap-clips cut off security passes. It amused the midwife!

They went through at the knee second time around and so I bought some from M&S - rubbish!

Now I have a pretty good pair from Jojo Maman Bebe. No clips required! They do need hoisting every now and again though!

jammi - which bit do you fasten the belt around? my bump is so low that there's no room underneath without strapping my thighs together!

tasssisss - am coming round to the idea of the dungarees - any idea where i can get some from?

Ooh I share in this problem! My Next jeans came without a belt or belt hoops and with just the little panel thingies on the side. I am forever pulling them up - so annoying! Work trousers I also have probs with - they have the button/elastic things on the side and are awful. You have to pull them really tight to stay up and you end up with a horrible scrunched up effect which digs into you!

moominsmummy- I am the same- I have a low bump, big hips and slightly overweight so there's no way I can do low rise or under the bump anything without exposing my bum and loads of unsightly flesh!! I know where you're coming from re: strapping thighs together too!

Mum2b2babyroo- I hate the button/elastic things too. They dig into you all day and STILL don't stop your trousers from falling down! I end up with big red button imprints on either side of my hips.

As if pregnancy wasn't uncomfortable enough!

Share you frustrations! Bought 2 pairs off ebay from seraphine but they don't stay up at all, even with bump band. I have a pair of cords from Formes which do stay up (on the bump) and I've just bought a pair of JoJo maman jeans off ebay which I'm hoping will stay up (I've found JoJo to be good generally). For work I've a pair of over the bump black trousers from Funmum.com which are great

Ugh!!! OMG - I hate maternity jeans! When I was in the first trimester I thought they were the best things since sliced bread but since I am now in the 3rd and have a very low and quite large bump nothing, i mean not even my knickers, stay up!!!

Worst thing is walking up stairs and flashing my crack to all and sundry, i literally have to hold onto my belt loops (no belt possible because when I sit down it cuts in really painfully) as i mount the stairs - so unsightly.

I am going stir crazy! I have jeans of every type, over, under, on the bump, some with elastic and buttons from M&Ps and still no joy.

Am going to the Baby show at Excel on Saturday and am going to spend the day scouring for a solution. My friend did say that you can buy "bump braces"!! I am going to look for some online now and if i find any will attach a link!

Huge sighs of sympathy to you all xx

mum2scrap - let us all know if you find any magic solution

we could always just tape our trousers to our bellies - but given the number of times we pregnant types have to go for a wee the cost could be prohibitive

Braces must be the solution Mum2scrap- what a fab idea. Would wear them under my top so I don't look like a clown though

Fave maternity wear is a stretchy black jersey dress from Mothercare. Just on the knee. Sooo comfy and easy to wear casual over jeans, to work with nice shoes and thick tights, or somewhere posh with heeled boots and glam accessories. Sadly I only get to do the first one and my bump/boobs are normally covered in my lunch or ds's sticky finger prints

£12.99 from BitsnStuff and they come in black or nude!!
Just ordered some from this site:
www.bitsnstuff.co.uk/acatalog/Gifts_for_New_Mums_and_New_Dads.html

  • you need to scroll down to "belly ups" and pay through pay pal but already got an email from the company to confirm the order. They are based in Kent.

If this link doesn't work then try searching google for "belly ups" am sincerely hoping that this is the end of our agony!!

I have the same problem so I just get long tops to avoid revealing knickers and/or bum! I also hate the trousers dragging on the floor when they are falling down as they get wet/I might trip when carrying DS so I have stuck 2 fingers up to fashion and have the trousers tucked into my socks

The only ones I have which stay put are stretchy jersey overbump trousers from Next, which I have 2 pairs of and currently live in. I'd love to find some jeans which will do the same but no luck so far. Overbump is definitely all that works for me - scary though they look on the hanger!!

oh and I had the maternity braces from Bits'n'Stuff too. They do do the job wonderfully well for a few weeks but kine quickly ran out of strength in the clippy bit - I think it was using them to clip thick-ish jeans that overstretched them so just be warned, be wary of what you clip them onto. Am not getting more as my skin is too sensitive to have any metal or slightly irritating bits at the moment, but they do work.

Bummer systemsaddict - wish I had seen your post before I had bought them - went rushing in and bought them as soon as I saw them. Most of my heans aren't that thick so hopefully they will be ok.

I have some non maternity trousers that I wear under the bump with a belly band on top, it works fantastically and the bands were £9.99 for one black one white in H&M.

Oh they won't be a waste of money Mum2Scrap, mine were great when they were working well and gave me a few extra weeks in some well-loved trousers! Would get more if it wasn't for sensitive skin

its so annoying isn't it! i don't much hips and found most pg trousers slipped. was given some great one from asda where the top bit was slightly elsticated and they were the best. And i had a couple of great skirts from top shop. Was so sick of all my clothes that i gave them away a couple of months after ds was born. Now 7.5 weeks pregnant and already expanding - perhaps I was a bit rash!

Ladies,

The UK is crap for maternity clothes. Although, the shops are slowly improving, they still don't know how to make wearable clothes, for pregnant women.

Now if any of you have relatives in the US, you will be able to get excellent trousers from there. They look good and they stay UP!!!

Good luck x

I totally sympathise. Had forgotten how annoying this is from last time around. Now 16 weeks and really need to get out of normal jeans pronto. Spent the morning in town trying on jeans of all kinds and NONE of them were right - either panel in wrong place or need constant hoisting or just plain not comfy. So depressing - I live in my jeans normally. Last time I resorted to a long denim skirt with an over-bump panel - not the same issues with skirts falling down as trousers - and in the last few weeks, borrowed maternity dungarees. Gulp. Luckily no photographic evidence exists - I was thinking I looked like Felicity Kendal in The Good Life. This was not the case. I looked more like Mr Tumble off CBeebies. One of my friends has informed me that if I wear the dungarees this time round she will not speak to me.

Think yourselves lucky, if you think the UK is crap for maternity clothes you should live here.

My mat jeans get pulled up so often that I have made holes in the waistband, and I'm only 26 weeks.
