Constipation first trimester - HELP!

Currently 9+5 and when I say I am struggling with going to toilet....the pain is REAL.
I used to eat very healthy and exercise but for past few weeks I've had no energy and been so nauseus all I've been able to stomach is plain beige carbs in various forms (bread, toast, crumpets, bagels, crackers, biscuits). All of which contain pretty much no fibre so what did I expect!?
Has anyone got any tips to get things moving? I've been trying to encorporate a smoothie in the day so I can cram some fruit in but even those are hard to stomach. Used fybogel couple of weeks ago and it made me throw up do want to stay away from that.
I feel so miserable and not myself and the added discomfort of being constipated is making me feel worse :(

Nothing much to do with fibre. Your insides slow down.

Movicol was the only thing to help me.

BabyHope1 · 13/08/2023 20:37

For me lots of water, yogurt with whole grain cereals, fruit and vegetables did the job each time I had problems. Good luck!

Earthollow · 13/08/2023 20:41

I’d suggest Movicol too. I’m struggling to stomach much at the moment so I asked in a pharmacy. They said go to a doctor and get some Movicol

Typz · 13/08/2023 20:52

Prune juice?

CR7 · 13/08/2023 20:53

I started with lactulose and moved on to movicol. It's much better x

You can buy it yourself just don't say you are pregnant.

I was refused a anal douche when pregnant.... Like ffs

Bought a carton yesterday! Had some this morning. I'm trying everything at this point 😂

Ah bless you - the struggle is real! Pregnancy constipation is THE WORST!! 😫

Currently going through it myself at 27 weeks, after trying EVERYTHING, but I've just got myself some prune juice and laxido (cheaper form of movicol) as was at my wits end, which is helping so much after only a day! Would definitely recommend, if you can stomach it at the moment with your nausea, and stay hydrated. All safe in pregnancy, but may need a health professional to sign off on the laxido.

Good luck, and hope you get some relief soon!

@mbernue I am semi sure it's safe for pregnancy

CR7 · 13/08/2023 22:07

@mbernue

Macrogols (Laxido®, Molaxole®, Movicol®) are not absorbed into the bloodstream and increase the water content of the stools, helping them to pass through the bowel. They are quite commonly used in pregnancy and there are no concerns that they can harm the baby.

You won't get it at a pharmacy as they give you nothing in pregnancy....

CR7 · 13/08/2023 22:22

@mbernue maybe not but you can get it online x

Pharmacists won't sell it to you if you say you are pregnant: it's not approved for pregnant women.
So you have to go to your gp or lie to the pharmacist.

CR7 · 13/08/2023 22:32

@mbernue very true, but I ordered it online. Was asked a series of questions, none of which was "are you pregnant".

RiderofRohan · 13/08/2023 22:55

I'd start with a bag of dried apricots or prunes. If that doesn't work then move on to laxatives

heydoubleyou · 14/08/2023 09:01

Movicol/laxido, lots of water, and then daily magnesium citrate when things are moving again works for me!

FortheBeautyoftheEarth · 14/08/2023 09:53

For me it's drinking lots of water and going for a walk. I know it's hard with the fatigue but even just a 10 mins around the block seems to help.

CR7 · 14/08/2023 09:55

I drink three litres a day and have a job where I'm on my feet. Nothing worked for me aside from movicol x

Mushroo · 14/08/2023 09:59

This was the worst part of pregnancy for me 😂. It got so bad I didn’t go for over a week and then had the worst cramps of my life and basically had to do a mini labour on the loo at 3am to get it out. (Sorry tmi, but I’m still scarred).

What helped:

  • a smoothie everyday ideally with mango
  • 2 litres of water without fail
  • a one shot ‘proper’ coffee. I figured being constipated to the point I was in pain was worse than a small amount of caffeine.
  • Try and do some light exercise. Walking around the block as suggested above does help.

It does get better!

Get a squatty potty, or stool or even just raise your feet up on bricks or large tins. You'd be amazed at this simple tip to raise your feet up- can improve things dramatically!

Glycerine suppositories. Totally safe when pregnant and very effective (stay close to your bathroom 🤣)

Clowninja · 14/08/2023 14:54

I agree with prune juice!
I experienced exactly the same. Grabbed 2x big bottles on my lunch break, it tasted vile but it definitely helped.
(Hard to explain my drink choice to my coworkers when pregnancy still secret though)

happyclam · 14/08/2023 15:08

I have been in a very similar situation over the last few months and honestly I've found one bowl of bran flakes a day solves it! If I don't have them for a few days it comes back..

And thankfully bran flakes fit in the 'bland beige' category for sickness!

Peony654 · 14/08/2023 15:11

Lactulose helped me - also try a kiwi with the skin on, bran flakes, prunes, dried apricots.
