5th day of induction NHS. Losing hope

Made a previous post about this. So I came in Saturday morning to start my induction. I had 3 pessaries that failed and I'm still only 1cm pushing 2cm my cervix is favourable and they said they can break my waters artificially. I'm still on a list to get my waters broken and been waiting days. Been here since Saturday and honestly feeling so.fed up watching people come in and out constantly and I'm just stuck here. It's the worst thing ever and so deflating ! I was supposed to be induced early as baby is measuring large and reduced movements. My due date is Saturday. I've cried so many times to the midwives saying hoe soul destroying this is ! And I've never known anything like it

Has anyone else experienced this ? It's just shocking !!

I do feel for you unfortunately it is fairly common. Once your waters are broken or they put up a drip you will be deemed to be in "active labour" and the expectation is that you will be delivered within 12 hours. As soon as they do that they effectively start the clock. They won't do that unless there is capacity on labour ward/ in Theatres.

Mummyme87 · 02/08/2023 17:56

I’m sorry it’s so hard. Inductions really can be tough. The pessaries haven’t failed though, they have changed your cervix enough to break your waters which is the aim. You will be a priority it’s just safety to provide 1:1 care, which I’m sure you know. Once your waters are broken things will get going and you may need the oxytocin drip to get contractions moving, all typical of the induction process. The aim isn’t to deliver by 12hrs though as the PP stated, it’s can take 12hrs to get your cervix in to the active phase of labour but that’s also normal. You’ve got this. Try and sleep as much as you can, you will have your baby soon

SouthwestSis · 02/08/2023 18:13

There isn't enough staff, the government have wrecked the NHS, and voters have let them
I'm sorry you're having to go though this

TeaKitten · 02/08/2023 18:15

Will they let you go home while you’re waiting OP? Did you think anymore about having a c section instead?

Emmagr1 · 02/08/2023 18:24

Yes this has happened to me twice. Maternity wards are very busy and understaffed and they prioritise who's in most need. This means if you are low risk you will get parked up until they get round to you.

I suspect you are being regularly monitored and everything is ok.

They got round to me by the 5th day at 10pm in the evening, at which point they broke my waters at 2 cm's dilated. My daughter was born 7am the next morning.

Be mentally prepared for the drip, which brings on the labour. 1st pregnancy my baby was born 2.5hrs after being on the drip and 2nd baby was 4 hours ( I was larger in the 2nd pregnancy).

You and baby's heart rate will be monitored throughout.

Pink Pamplemousse · 02/08/2023 18:33

Sorry to hear you're having such a rough time of it 😖 it's such an awful waiting game.

I've just posted on another thread in the childbirth section. I went in to hospital to begin induction this morning and after examination they said I don't need the pessary and can go straight to my waters being broken- however there's a backlog of other ladies waiting for this and it could be a few days! So I've been sent home to wait until a slot comes up. 🙈

So whilst not the exact same scenario- I empathise with you and fingers crossed things will get moving for you soon. X

Hiya. I have been home today for 6 hours but have to come back to hospital as I'm being regularly monitored due to reduced movements. I really wanted a natural birth which is why I put myself on list for waters to be broken. But its just horrible waiting and i feel so uncomfortable already and getting irregular pains - also so isolating in hospital! Just hoping I get called down soon x

I had a ‘failed induction’ years ago with my first baby. Four days of pessaries, only got to 1cm dilated. I was offered c-section in day 5 and took it. Very glad I did! Have they not seen offered this to you?

buzzlightyearsgloves · 02/08/2023 18:58

Yes inductions are horrible and maternity care in the NHS is terrible too due to lack of funding and staff. It's frustrating but it won't matter once you hold your baby. Good luck!

LittleMoReturns · 02/08/2023 19:00

Sorry for typos. Also meant to say I feel your pain. I found the whole experience of induction awful - no care and poor communication from doctors. I was exhausted by day 4 and just wanted it over with!

Dazedandconfused170 · 02/08/2023 19:37

I had a similar experience
1st baby, couple of days overdue and fed up of being pregnant. Mentioned to MW I thought the baby was moving less, I wasn’t concerned and assumed it’s because they hardly have any room in there now, but every MW apt they make a big deal of the movements
they sent me to hospital for a scan and all was fine but the dr came in and said cause you’re overdue we can induce you, you’ll have the baby in the next couple of days

being a first time mum that sounded great as I was ready to have the baby and didn’t feel confident to go against a drs suggestion

i was in hospital for 6 days, 5 of them just waiting for a free bed!
had 1 pessary that helped me dilate 3/4 cm can’t remember and then there was no further movement from there so had to wait 5 days for a bed
wished I could have gone back home as everything was fine any time I was monitored

Seemed really stupid I was taking up a bed and that I couldn’t be in the comfort of my own home

elliejjtiny · 02/08/2023 19:43

I'm so sorry, it's awful but it happens a lot. I spent a lot of time on the antenatal/induction ward in my last 3 pregnancies and I saw a lot of women in the 5th day of pessary induction. Really hope your little one is born soon.

LD233 · 02/08/2023 21:54

Thanks everyone it is ridiculous just wasn't expecting to be in here this long. I don't know how much longer I'll be in here either !

Hiya no good news. Still no bed today 6th day on the ward today and c section list is just as long to wait for. They are very apologetic but my mental state is so bad right now and seeing people constantly come in and out whilst I'm still here waiting is soul destroying x

elliejjtiny · 03/08/2023 15:02

You poor thing. Are you allowed to go off the ward for a walk? I found while I was waiting for a bed on Labour ward a walk, even if it was just round the hospital corridors, to the shop or cafe made me feel less "trapped". Although when I was waiting 48 hours for my c-section I was gowned up most of the time and only allowed to leave the bed to go to the loo. That was torture and no tablets or Wi-Fi in those days so I couldn't even sit and binge watch a good box set.

Luhou · 03/08/2023 16:07

I've been there, and it was covid so we couldn't leave the hospital either!

Just try take you mind off it as much as possible with some crap tv or something.

Your baby will be here before you know it.

toobif · 03/08/2023 16:08

Ask for a c section

LaRevolution · 03/08/2023 16:12

I feel for you - it's so hard. I was in a similar position with my first and ended up with an emergency section after a few days, which I was very grateful for.

With my second, I went in for a scheduled section early on the day, then had to wait whilst various emergencies came and went - I was so tired and thirsty and frustrated, and that was only after about 7hrs of waiting!! (Hormones...😂)

Thinking of you OP, and hoping you get some good news soon.

LD233 · 03/08/2023 18:05

C section is a longer waiting list apparently. 😫

OP posts:
Mummyme87 · 03/08/2023 18:18

C section would be classed as maternal request so way down the list. Still need a 1:1 midwife but also a surgeon and theatre. Your time will come, and you will have a dedicated room and midwife. Do some colostrum harvesting and put it in their milk fridge.

Luhou · 03/08/2023 18:44

Honestly if it was me. I'd be opting for a section. I speak as somebody who has been in your position and I don't mean to scare you but having your water broken does bring on contractions thick and fast, there's no gradual build up. I ended up with an epidural and a forcep delivery amongst other complications with baby due to waters being broken.

Yeah I'm allowed to go out and stuff and had a few hours where I've been able to.go home but have to come back so spending most the time here. Its so mentally exhausting I've never known anything like it. 6th day on here now and still no progress and no bed due ti how busy it is. So fed up c

Is there another hospital that you can go to? See what time their waiting list is etc?
I've been following and honestly this situation you're in is beyond a joke.
I'm aware the NHS is on its knees but I have no words for this at all.
I am so sorry you're going through this, it shouldn't be like this.
I know they have to prioritise but yeah this is not acceptable

I asked this today they checked and advised the other hospitals are also packed. As they said they can look to see if there's a delivery suite available in another hospital and a midwife to give 1-1 care. No luck today 😔😔😔 it really is awful I'm struggling immensely
