Vasectomy baby

Hi guys, I'm 4 months pregnant and the father had a vasectomy 4 weeks prior to conception. Just wondering if anyone has given birth or knows of someone who had given birth under the same circumstances and if the baby came out okay? I've read a lot of things online such as 4 weeks post-casectomy severe DNA damage occurs in stored sperm that the sperm health declined after 2 weeks, so I'm worried. The 13 week scans were apparently normal but I can't find any personal experiences of how things turned out with the baby. Please let me know if you have any information from first hand experience or through someone close of how baby turned out. Thanks 💛

Yes it happened to a friend, her daughter is totally fine. I don’t think there’s any evidence accidental post vasectomy babies have a higher rate of birth defects?? - where are you reading this? check with your doctor obviously, but I’d have thought damaged sperm would generally not result in a pregnancy.

Are you sure he had one though? Because what I do know is it’s very rare indeed.

DustyLee123 · 02/08/2023 08:03

The two I know are absolutely fine, I think you need to step away from Google.

CurlewKate · 02/08/2023 08:05

OK. Just in case anyone's reading this who might need this information. You need to use other contraception for AT LEAST 8 weeks post vasectomy. Or until 2 sperm-free semen tests. HE WILL HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS.

legalseagull · 02/08/2023 08:23

We were told 4 months before it would be 'safe'

I've not heard anything about DNA problems. Doesn't make sense that that can possibly be true.

dementedpixie · 02/08/2023 08:28

We were told to use other precautions until dh had a sample clear of sperm. Needs.about 20 ejaculations to get rid of residual sperm. Not sure its true about birth defects

leismah · 02/08/2023 08:33

That sounds like total BS. You're told to use other BC until the analysis results come back clear due to the risk of pregnancy on the basis you're presumably not looking to get pregnant again, not because there is a potential risk of birth defects.

Less rare just 4 weeks after though.

Thanks for everyone's input so far, yes I knew there was a risk but he stated he had masturbated the recommended amount of times and there was probably a very slim chance of anything happening. He did send me a screenshot of the email of the surgery confirmation date, I'd call the place and ask but I know they won't give me the details because it's medical it will be confidential but I mostly believe he was honest about it as he didn't seem to want more kids. Yeah google isn't always helpful but it's been driving me nuts worrying about baby and if they're going to be okay. If the failed procedure is a result of the tubes reconnecting then I'm not worried about DNA damage of the sperm as there would be a fresh supply coming through (best case scenario, fingers crossed) but if it was a result of residual sperm stored in the vas deferens then it could be an issue from what I've read as the sperm loses motility and severe DNA damage was observed from one study, so basically just here to see who has kids from the same situation or knows anyone as I think that's the best way to ease my worries. I want to spend the remainder of my pregnancy at peace and not worried. As for where I got this information, it's from tens and tens of articles I've read over the last few weeks, I've read some contradicting information, I will ask my midwife tomorrow when I see her if she's dealt with many babies conceived after vasectomy as well.

I know it's too late now- but if you googled all the scary stuff then surely you must have noticed the 8-12 weeks and two clear test instruction?

leismah · 02/08/2023 10:09

20 ejaculations is just a guide, you were a fool for not using protection until he had the all clear. He hasn't lied to you, you've both just ignored the medical advice.

Bee3232 · 02/08/2023 10:09

Yes only now that I'm pregnant, I took his word for it at the time that it was pretty safe but hey I'm not mad (certainly was in shock for a few days though), I'm just worried about baby that's all, just want them to be okay.

OP posts:
leismah · 02/08/2023 10:10

You've got no right to be mad, it's as much on you!

leismah · 02/08/2023 10:11

Why was it a shock to be pregnant after unprotected sex?

leismah · 02/08/2023 10:13

Whatever you do, please don't go around spouting online or in person about your miracle baby saying it was conceived after the snip, that is not exactly what happened and will cause unnecessary worry to those who followed the advice and as such are in a much lower risk category.

Bee3232 · 02/08/2023 10:14

You can leave now. You are incredibly rude. I want my child I am just worried about them that's all. Now leave.

Bee3232 · 02/08/2023 10:16

Disgusting behaviour! I'm pregnant you clearly lack empathy.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 02/08/2023 10:17

If the sperm was damaged then it would not have been able to fuse with your egg as it wouldnt be able to move fast enough compared to healthy sperm. He should have submitted a sperm test for analysis before having unprotected sex. 20-30 ejaculations is just a guide.

Bee3232 · 02/08/2023 10:20

Yes I'm holding thumbs that that's the case, thank you for actually being polite and helpful as well as providing a sense of comfort unlike some of the other comments on here. I appreciate it 😊

OP posts:
CurlewKate · 02/08/2023 10:25

"He hasn't lied to you"

Yes, he has. He will have had the procedure and what he has to do next explained to him in detail. He then chose not to share this information with the OP. It also seems pretty unlikely that he managed 30 ejaculations in 3 weeks after a vasectomy. Although some people do recover quickly.......

Bleepbloopbluurp · 02/08/2023 10:28

I'd think that if a sperm cell is sufficiently healthy that it can penetrate and fertilise the egg it is unlikely to have severe damage.
I'm going to bet that those studies looked at sperm cells themselves and that there is no study showing that babies born post vasectomy have a higher rate of genetic issues as a result of DNA damage (because how would you know the cause)?

Sotired22 · 02/08/2023 10:29

What do people get out of being so rude to total strangers asking for advice / support? It’s bizarre. OP I hope everything turns out ok. I don’t know of any babies conceived after a vasectomy but I’ve never heard about there being a problem if a baby was conceived this way.

CurlewKate · 02/08/2023 10:30

And he won't have had the required sperm analysis either.

SM4713 · 02/08/2023 10:32

Have you spoken to your midwife about your concerns, so they can talk through any actual medical evidence of DNA issues?

You said the 12 week scan was normal- which is great. You could always pay for the NIPT if you wanted extra reassurance, but that only looks at T13, T18, T21 and a few others.

CurlewKate · 02/08/2023 10:33

@Sotired22 "What do people get out of being so rude to total strangers asking for advice / support?"

I'm not being rude. I don't know anything about the effect of post vasectomy sperm on any baby conceived. I do know about the process of a vasectomy and what happens next, and that by definition, the man in this scenario lied the the OP. She needs to know that. And other people reading this thread need to know not to make the same mistake that she did.

leismah · 02/08/2023 10:43

It'll be FINE she has googled some absolutely BS and yet doesn't understand how she got pregnant, she can't have it both ways! Start listening to actual medical advice!
