Begging for vomiting advice

Jujulouise · 01/08/2023 08:44

12 weeks and if anything the vomiting is worse, which feels very disheartening because I thought I’d start picking up. The vomiting is so violent, projectile and often makes me wet myself. I’m thrown my back out from it and my throat is so sore.
My GP just told me to read the NHS website. I’m feeling down and worried I’ll be in bed forever!
Has anyone been through this and find things which get them through?

This sounds awful, sorry. My nausea was violent but I was only sick once or twice a week. Like you, it didn’t subside at 12 weeks either. But I was able to live with it because it usually stopped in the afternoon.

I would speak to a midwife who is likely to have some good advice and may have a better idea of what your GP should be doing than your GP. My hospital had a walk in centre for pregnant women for this kind of thing. I’m sure there will be some kind of provision outside of your usual appointments. Good luck.

Hell for 9 months. Vomited atleast 20 times a Day. GP gave me anti sickness which reduced it to about 14-15 times a day

Drank sparkling water

Took water everywhere I went

Forces Haribo the second I opened my eyes

Ginger / calomille tea

Flat lemonade

Travel sickness bands

Slept all I could

Avoided car journeys as much as possible

Cried a lot that helped

McDonald's believe it or not

Herbal rub on my temples

Warm blackcurrant

No screens or tv

Jujulouise · 01/08/2023 09:20

@quietnightmare were you working? I’ve had to take weeks off work.
9 months of it? That must have been awful. I have to tell myself it will pass or it feel too much.
thanks for the tips. Sleep is everything!

Go to a different GP!!!! Mine was wonderful and tried three different medications to ease the symptoms. I still felt horrible throughout (sorry...) but it made it bearable and I got back to work. They absolutely should not be fobbing you off, it's so annoying and ridiculous. Arghhh makes me so angry!

catsandkid · 01/08/2023 09:31

Both pregnancies I had to take time off work. It was so awful. My nausea was worse than actual vomiting but it was totally debilitating.

I ate only beige food (when I could even eat). Bagels with nothing on helped me.

Sparkling water to drink. Ginger tablets. Anti sickness bands. Never going to long without food even if I really didn't want to eat.

Also used this travel sickness watch thing that basically buzzes on the wrist constantly and is designed to interrupt messages to brain. I had it on full wack for weeks. Think it was called Emetem or something like that. I do think it helped a bit to take the edge of slightly.

My sickness was still horrendous at 12wk. Mostly gone by 20wk though. 16wks was a turning point.

fluffytail · 01/08/2023 09:32

The advice from your gp doesn't sound right to me. I was throwing up until 22 weeks, but only a few times a day and no where near as bad as you. Both my midwife and gp offered various medications to try and help. I'm surprised that you haven't been offered anything. Go to a different GP!

muddlingthrou · 01/08/2023 09:33

Your GP sounds useless! I was nauseous with frequent vomiting weeks 6-16. When my sickness didn't get any better at 12 weeks I went to my GP and was prescribed cyclizine, which made a big difference. Good luck x

Jujulouise · 01/08/2023 09:34

@catsandkid thank you I’m going to check out this watch thing you mentioned- gotta try it all! Glad it did get better at 20 weeks, I’ve got my fingers crossed for that!

Go back to the gp and ask for ondansetron. It made the days bearable for me. Also don't go too long without eating something

Jujulouise · 01/08/2023 09:37

@muddlingthrou i rang again just now and got prescribed cyclizine so fingers crossed for that!

@Severalreasons thank you! Good to know some things to do work for some people

I was just about to say ask for cyclizine, it's the only thing that worked for me and let me get back to some kind of normal although I was still constantly nauseous. I hope it works for you the sickness was the worst part of pregnancy for me

Yea I was working in a public facing role until about 8 weeks and I was having to make an excuse and run off mis sentence to throw up and my boss said that's it's not fair on me and moved me to an admin role for the remainder of my pregnancy and I worked from home. I was very lucky that even though I was struggling looking at the screen my boss said I can work my houses at any times throughout the day from 7am to whatever time so I had a break from the screen.

Your right in telling yourself it will pass it's the only way

I always threw up in a bowl while on the toilet as had the same issue as you

It's not forever but it's hell while it's happening but you WILL make it through

Maybe try soups and rice and pasta just foods that don't cause too much irritation to your throat on the way back up

caringcarer · 01/08/2023 10:03

Peppermint tea and ginger biscuit before you get out of bed. Lemonade to drink during the day.

Molehillminnie · 01/08/2023 10:04

Granny Smith or cooking apples. I had a Chinese midwife at my booking in appointment and that was her top tip, unofficially. Something about the sharpness of the flavor really did help.

Jujulouise · 01/08/2023 10:05

@quietnightmare cant believe I didn’t think of being sick in a bowl while on the loo- such an obvious thing but that’ll be a game changer thank you!

@Molehillminnie thanks! Funnily enough apples are one of the few things I can stomach!

I always recommend Granny Smith apples on threads about pregnancy sickness. They really helped me! I'd have one constantly on hand that I'd be nibbling on.

Glad you've got the cyclizine now OP, be aware it can really knock you out at first but I did get used to that.
And if it doesn't work, don't be afraid to go back and ask for something else. There are alternatives they can give you.

Absolute game changer and the apples as others have said.

My husband just reminded me about popcorn helped

muddlingthrou · 01/08/2023 13:53

I went through a big kiwi phase. Something about the sharpness and the juiciness was just about bearable. And salt and vinegar chip sticks! Wow, this is bringing back memories now.

Inmydreams88 · 01/08/2023 14:41

Are you keeping enough food and fluid down? If not you need to go back to the GP for anti sickness medication.

You may need to go to a&e for fluids if you’re not keeping much down. I got myself into a right state, dehydrated, dizzy, lost a stone and was completely exhausted. I couldn’t even get out of bed most days. I was off work 2 months.

I had sickness from 6 weeks. I’m nearly 18 weeks now and it’s been much better the past 2 weeks.

Inmydreams88 · 01/08/2023 14:43

Just seen you’ve been given Cyclizine: hopefully it works for you. Didn’t work for me but keep going back to doctors if they don’t work as they can give you lots of different ones till they find one they works for you. Ondanestron was the only one that worked for me.

babyboyHarrison · 01/08/2023 15:00

Might be a good idea to buy some ketones sticks. Just to keep an eye, if they go very high call the doctors again.

babyboyHarrison · 01/08/2023 15:02

Ice lollies were nice too. I think I lived off tinned peaches. I wasn't in a good state and you know it is bad when you need to factor in what the food you are eating is like when you throw it all back up again. Weetabix Envy NOT good.
