SPD help

I'm definitely convinced this is spd but does it happen this quickly.

I went out to do some errands yesterday and got back had my usual pains. Managed to get to sleep okay but woke up to pain in the front of my pelvis now. Its worse to get out of bed and a pain to turn over. My left said is worse than right but has started in the right side as well.

I've had to call in sick to work and feel so guilty but the thought of walking to and from work and standing for hours feels me with dread and know I need to think of my health now and look after myself.

How many weeks are you? Is it your first pg?

Runnerduck34 · 24/07/2023 13:16

Only a midwife or GP will tell you.
I had SPD for one of my preganacies its very painful. Excrutiating to go up and downstairs ,to bend and pick anything up from floor, load washing machine etc.
I slept with pillows between my thighs.
Had a support maternity belt which helped a bit .
Physio wouldnt touch me as I was pregnant , just issued support belt.
Go to doctors/ midwife asap and dont feel guilty about phoning in sick.
I hope it passes soon and isnt SPD.

I had this with both my pregnancies. For me it was like a lightening bolt that went straight up between my legs (particularly when I turned over in bed) that was the give away. It spread into my hip joints too (worse on the right). I got a support belt and found a physio to treat me. The effects of physio lasted only for a day or so but it was worth it! I did end up on crutches too which helped although not ideal when trying to look after a toddler.

I've been to the doctors and they think it's that. Getting referred to physio. Hope I don't have to wait too long. Thank you x

I had it towards the end of my first pg and then earlier in my second, by the third pg I was on crutches by 20 weeks but it was twins, the pain on turning over in bed sounds very familiar, keep your knees together, and when you get into and out of the car. I'd recommend seeing a maternity physio so you can get properly diagnosed and have some advice about what you can do to help it, if that's what it is

I have this awful grinding clicking in my left side which has now in my right side from walking. It's affecting my lower back/hips and legs. And now in the front. I just feel like i shouldn't be twisting about it as I've read some have it so much worse but what I'm feeling isn't normal or right. X

The doctor is getting my midwife to refer me. As she said it'll be quicker. Thank you for your response x

Yes I had this too with both pregnancies. It's excruciating isn't it? Sorry to hear you're going through it. Definitely push for a womens health physio if you can, that made a big difference for me in my two pregnancies.

In the meantime, a support belt for daytime and a good pregnancy pillow for between your legs in the night should help. I also found a lot of good spd exercises on YouTube which were the same as my physio recommended.

MoltenLasagne · 24/07/2023 13:55

I've just checked and the exercises I did thatr helped the most were glute bridges, clams (look this up on youtube) and pillow squeezes between the knees. Didn't stop the pain but eased it and stopped it progressing.

Three pregnancies and it reared its ugly head earlier each time. Second pregnancy I found physio gave me a new lease of life but the pain crept back in and I would need to go again. Third pregnancy I kept up my pregnancy Pilates and pilates teacher showed me a pelvic symmetry sequence and I went from agony to symptom free. I couldn’t believe it. Barely used belt on third pregnancy even though I had a toddler to chase around after and bigger baby.
One physio I spoke to said many women are being given outdated advice regarding managing pelvic pain during pregnancy.

applepancakes · 24/07/2023 14:08

I've had this with each of my three pregnancies: ended up on crutches fairly early one with the second, seem to have managed it better with the third by planning in a "rest" day after days I knew were going to be hard, swimming/exercise and paying for a specialist women's physio who worked wonders.

It's a really nasty condition and I feel for you, but managed properly it can be OK and should go away at the end of the pregnancy. Don't be afraid to ask the GP for stronger painkillers that are safe in pregnancy too, for the days when it's really bad.

Good luck

I'll look in to pilates. Its hard work when you have to look after a toddler. Thank you for your message and sorry you went through it. Glad your third pregnancy was better. I'm in a very physical demanding job on my feet for hours and walk to and from work so it's not helping. I hate the grinding and the clicking in my pelvis. X

Mine hasn't got to the point of needing crutches. God I feel pathetic whinging about it when some have it a lot worse. Glad it goes away. I will and thank you x

Do not feel pathetic at all - SPD is a horrible pain and made worse because, for me at least, it felt like I was damaging myself when moving because of the grinding feeling. Very scary and you can't even take proper pain killers! With my second I gave birth and instantly felt much better just because of the lack of weight on my pelvis.

Thank you. I'll try not to. Thinking of taken the full 7 days off work to rest. I know its sucks to only be able to have paracetamol. Doesn't touch it. Yesterday I laid on my back for my partner to do leg exercise thingies to see how bad it was and he commented my left side is so loose to my right and did notice a bit in my right but It has only just started on my right side. Its the walking thats crippling me x
