I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
//sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
//cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@gg9320 good luck ! I take mine at night too and it knocks me out!
Hope you start feeling ok soon!x

Superscientist · 31/07/2024 06:48

@gg9320 it might be worth playing with when you take it. I take my medication at 8.45 and by morning I have slept most of it off. If I take it half an hour later I wake up a bit groggy

AppleTree16 · 31/07/2024 08:07

@Superscientist the pregnancy sickness website is really good https://pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/get-help/treatments/
I went through basically all the treatment options via my GP and the only thing that’s worked for me is odansetron. I don’t tolerate the cyclizine / promethezine drugs at all.
move never been able to get Xonvea. It has to be prescribed by a consultant where I am and the Gp never got a reply.

Thanks I'm going to get an appointment for tomorrow. I was up in the night with my daughter and came over all dizzy and one of my legs went from underneath so I fell over and now my foot is in agony and I can't put much weight on it. I think the dizziness was because I haven't been able to keep much food down.

I'll go through the list and see what is suitable with my other meds. I know I can't get some antiemetics otc due to my mood stabiliser but hopefully the GP will be pragmatic. I'm 9 weeks so not sure I can get odanestron yet.

SunshineMummy2 · 31/07/2024 11:07

It's such a drag feeling this way. Drowsy off anti sickness meds and been tired from the pregnancy. I just want this stage to be over. I miss being able to do things with minimal effort. I'm feeling a bit miserable today and just had an update with my GP. He's giving me another prescription for the xonvea.

AppleTree16 · 31/07/2024 13:12

@Superscientist i started taking it at 10 weeks. There is a very slight increase in cleft palate risk but when I looked up the study personally, the risk is negligible. It was either that or be admitted to hospital, so I chose the drugs. My 20 week scan confirmed all okay with baby 🙏🏻

Saim86 · 31/07/2024 23:23

Apparently I can’t get xonvea our local maternity services don’t prescribe it I’m at my wits end none of the meds work they was working till about 7.5 weeks since then I’m constantly nauseous I’m now just reading stories of other mums who have had hg and when it stopped as I feel my only hope is to ride it through I’m now 9.2 weeks and I can only hope at week 12 it will gradually start to fade and be gone by the 14 weeks

Foxtrotbeta · 01/08/2024 08:41

Hi everyone, did anyone else feel like their medication stopped working as effectively? I'm 31 weeks now and I've had awful nausea again the last 3 days (probably made worse by heat and lack of sleep). I'm not vomitting again but the nausea is as bad as it's ever been. I've been on ondansatron now since about 14 weeks. I am seeing the consultant next week and wonder if its worth revisiting trying xonvea, which my GP wasn't able to give me.

SunshineMummy2 · 01/08/2024 09:42

I didn't realize some parts of the UK don't offer xonvea. I'm hoping to not be on this forever and ideally want to be off it around 14 weeks.

in my last pregnancy (on cyclizine & metaclopramide) I had a few random relapses of relentless sickness (I mean constant for hours and hours) but was able to go back on the same drugs once I received day patient IV treatment - it always coincided with not taking it easy or not eating regularly enough. The drugs always seemed to work again after those blips. It was like breakthrough sickness. Appreciate this may not be everyone’s experience though!

In my first pregnancy i had awful nausea and sickness in the third trimester from weeks 26-36 weeks. I probably was worse than the first trimester possibly due to it being in the summer and warmer. It might be less that the anti emetic has stopped working and more than the sickness is now beyond what the meds can manage.

Superscientist · 01/08/2024 10:20

I waited for a call from the GP about other antiemetics.
I've been to minor injuries with my foot. He wasn't that concerned about my foot probably just soft tissue but suggested seeing gp if the nausea and vomiting are triggering dizziness

Foxtrotbeta · 05/08/2024 14:08

Hi everyone, how soon after your baby arrived did nausea go away?

I'm 32 weeks now, still very nauseous. Missed one dose of medication yesterday afternoon and started vomitting again from 2am to 8am where I managed to keep a tablet down long enough for it to work.

I'm just focussing now that it's only 7 weeks to go... I have a cesarean planned for 39 weeks. Is the relief instant? Will I feel better straight away? I'm counting the days!

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 05/08/2024 14:23

@Foxtrotbeta as soon as I birthed the placenta it was like a switch! That's all I'm focusing on this time round again - I felt incredible after birth because I no longer felt sick / was being sick!

For me, baby born by c section at 5pm, slept the night, by morning the drugs had worn off and I was tucking in to a full English breakfast. Never felt better in my life!

Baby came a month early of his own accord too. Have my fingers crossed for the same this time- already have a plan of what I want to eat first!

Superscientist · 07/08/2024 16:52

@Foxtrotbeta My sister had hyperemesis in a pregnancy that ended in a termination for medical reasons and by the time she got home from the clinic the sickness had started to subside and she ate her first meal in weeks that evening.

gg9320 · 14/08/2024 09:25

Hope everyone’s managing ok. I’ve been trying new medications as I couldn’t tolerate Xonvea and metaclopramide plus cyclizine wasn’t enough. I tried prochlorperazine 5mg then 10mg but it had no effect, now trying ondansetron. I don’t think the 4mg is having any impact. Gonna try 8mg. I still feel awful with nausea but I’m not throwing up much (1-2 sessions a day) - where did people go from here? I think I’m at the end of the options and next is to get signed off from work as I’ve been hanging on by doing to the minimum as WFH. Feeling worried as I’m only 7 weeks and still getting worse day by day

AppleTree16 · 14/08/2024 11:45

@gg9320 odansetron was the gold standard for me. Stopped the vomiting but I still get bad nausea especially when it’s hot or I do too much. I’ve been signed off work since start of second trimester.

gg9320 · 14/08/2024 12:09

thanks @AppleTree16. Hope you get some relief from the nausea soon x
Gonna try the 8mg ondansetron! I think I need to stop being martyr to work and just ask to get signed off😅

SecretSloth99 · 14/08/2024 20:24

My sickness has come back in the last week or so…now 27+2 and starting to feel very down again. Going back to ask for Xonvea again and hope that it helps once more! I’m so so over feeling sick 90% of the time, and not being able to eat a proper meal in the evenings.

Reading others reassurances that it’s like a switch when baby is born is so helpful, because right now it feels like I will never feel well again!

I know having a newborn will be difficult, with lack of sleep and recovery post-delivery but I can’t help but feel it will be so much better than constantly feeling sick and in pain!

I'm feeling you, I'm 30 weeks now and the feeling sick all the time has returned! At least we are nearly there 🤞 I never came off my medication so its getting through it🙃

Foxtrotbeta · 15/08/2024 20:58

@SecretSloth99 I feel the same, don't care about the sleep deprivation just desperate not to feel nauseous anymore! I'm 33 weeks and not been well since I was 6 weeks. Such a long time!

@gg9320 Ondansetron has also worked best for me to stop the vomitting. Unfortunately the nausea has been constant, I had a brief patch about 26 weeks where I felt ok during the day and just worse in the evening but other than that it's been 24/7 nausea for the last 7 months.

gg9320 · 16/08/2024 16:10

Thank you @Foxtrotbeta i’ve been signed off for 2 weeks in the first instance. Bless you, it’s miserable. I remember it getting better and being able to reduce my medication last time as pregnancy progressed but it not going away. I felt amazing after birth though because suddenly I was nausea free and could eat anything I wanted!

Foxtrotbeta · 19/08/2024 17:14

Nausea is still bad at 34 weeks and I've been trying to get Xonvea. My GP said it has to be the hospital and the hospital have told me they won't prescribe in late pregnancy? They offered me Metoclopramide but I tried that in second trimester and it didn't work. Looks like I'll just have to stick with Ondansetron. I feel like they're gate keeping xonvea, I'm guessing it's expensive!
