Can't eat morning sickness - worried about starving

KRob12 · 15/07/2023 13:19

Hi I'm 6 weeks pregnant and have the worst morning sickness ever except its literally lasting all day and I can't get out of bed.

The thought of any food is making me sick and I'm worried I won't be able to get critical nutrients to the baby or could even end up making myself more sick if I can't eat

Is it bad to eat non-nutrious foods if that's all I can manage or will I be doing more bad than good??

Absolutely broken from it all

Hey! As someone who survived hell with spewing up to 30 weeks with my twins, my advice is eat ABSOLUTELY anything you want (that will stay down)

I survived on hagen daus ice cream and chips from the chinese and pineapple for most my twin pregnancy, and both twins came out healthy!

Hoping it passes soon!

In a crisis, any calories are better than no calories. Are you able to stomach a pregnancy vitamin?

h3ll0o · 15/07/2023 13:26

For the first semester I survived on Saag Aloo and pilau rice.

megletthesecond · 15/07/2023 13:28

If you can't eat anything (junk is fine) then you must see the GP for medication. I couldn't keep down food and only just managed tiny bits of water and was given Avomine which allowed me to eat an evening meal and breakfast.

Speak to your doctor.

If you are overweight you should be taking higher dosage of folic acid.

Eat anything you want, it's better than nothing. Get your ketones checked as you could be dehydrated.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 15/07/2023 13:30

I had HG with both pregnancies. My doctor wasn't concerned about lack of eating - just lack of fluid. If you're able to drink then please try not to worry too much.

I found coke from McDonald's helped. A lot.

If you get any worse see a doctor ASAP.

Floralnomad · 15/07/2023 13:33

I was sick multiple times daily throughout my first pregnancy and survived on bags of wotsits and the occasional jacket potato , neither of which were too bad when they revisited me later . My baby was 10lb 3 oz .

Superfoodie123 · 15/07/2023 13:37

When pregnant I was so ill. I was munching McDonald's fries everyday with a coke and mentos in between. My baby perfect no issues with her health

Inmydreams88 · 15/07/2023 15:01

I had no appetite whatsoever, there was literally no food I wanted to eat. Not eating made me sick, but eating also made me sick. So I was scared to eat, and scared to not eat. The nausea was constant.

My husband used to make me food, usually a cheese and tomato toastie or something carby and he would call me to come downstairs and I'd actually have a breakdown thinking "I can't eat this. I don't want this. I'm going to be sick." But i knew I had to eat. It was like actual torture for me to think or eat food.

Eat whatever you can, whenever you can. But don't stress. Fluids are more important though and you'll become dehydrated fast. So make sure you go to A&E if you can't keep fluids down.

What do you possibly think could go wrong with the pregnancy by eating a bit of junk food?

Your baby will leach every nutrient it can get out of your body. Don’t worry about eating healthily, just eat whatever you think you can manage. For me it was bland carbs. The only thing you have to worry about now is finding some food that stays down.

Singleandproud · 15/07/2023 15:08

I had HG and lost 25 lbs in six days I was so sick at the beginning. GP just admitted me to hospital for IV fluids and told me not to worry as our body prioritises the baby ahead of the adult.

I survived on McDonald's chips and Heinz tomato soup - we joke that's why DD is a red head.

I found eating refreshers or similar 'chalky' sweets actually made the vomit taste almost pleasant so I highly recommend them and suck on ice poles or get someone to make you healthy ice lollies from fruit juice etc.

Keep an eye on your urine output and colour and your vomit and if either changes to a worrying colour go to the Dr's.

I hope you feel better soon.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/07/2023 15:09

My babies were made out of cheesy Doritos. They are in their teens now and all fit and healthy. Eat whatever your body lets you and try not to worry. If you can’t keep fluids down see a doctor x

PaintedEgg · 15/07/2023 15:54

just eat whatever you can - and if you throw up, eat again, some of it will stay

you can also get anti-sickness tablets prescribed

make sure to stay hydrated and check for UTI as this can also make you feel sick

justaweenamechange · 15/07/2023 16:00

You eat whatever you can manage, try and find a powdered prenatal vitamin, and if it doesn't subside soon then go to the docs.

Try some electrolytes too, and an additional vitamin B6 as that is linked to severe morning sickness.

hannahwaddinghamsbiceps · 15/07/2023 16:04

My daughter had this. There are lots of medications you can have but you need to try them one at a time to see what works. Please get in touch with your GP asap to get help before you become unwell and need to be hospitalised, which is what happened to my daughter. Keep your fluids up, tiny amounts often.
Wishing you all the best

Nutrient deficiencies such as why we take folic acid

Forestdweller11 · 15/07/2023 16:54

All I could basically keep down for about 6 months was haribo and ryvita. DC is pretty flexible so presume that must be down to the haribo consumption ...

Just eat what you can. Take a supplement. Visit GP/midwife

lljkk · 15/07/2023 17:06

dehydration is the big risk, can you take almost constant little sips of water or suck on ice cubes

KRob12 · 15/07/2023 17:13

Thank you so much xx

As above OP
Eat what you want and when you can. I had horrible sickness and nausea until week 20.

Absolutely do not take 'Avomine' even if you can get it as apparently discontinued do not take it, it is a big fat no no for pregnant woman. Your child can die

Fairylight102 · 15/07/2023 17:54

I had awful nausea from weeks 6-12 of my pregnancy (now 21 weeks) and honestly just eat whatever you can stomach even if it feels like really unhealthy stuff.

Don’t hesitate to contact your GP to discuss medication. I was really scared of taking medication during pregnancy and in retrospect I let my self suffer for too long before getting help. This page is really good at explaining the options and weighing up the options https://www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/get-help/treatments/

Also something that helped me was letting go of the mentality of eating 3 meals a day. If you want to eat 6 small meals, all of which are “breakfast” food, just do it and don’t worry about whether that’s an unconventional thing to do.

Be strong, it’s awful but you will get through this.

over the counter hay fever medication, cetirizine hydrochloride, is sometimes prescribed for morning (or rather "all day") sickness. You can also buy them over the counter

granted, when i used to take them i had to time it very well so that i would not get sick immediately after 😅 but if you can keep it down for 20min it works pretty well

bertynoonoo · 15/07/2023 18:32

I was sick every day bar 2 of my pregnancy, had months off work, couldn't even go into our kitchen for some days as the smell of food made me feel so ill. I worried so much and didn't want to take anti- nausea medication as I'd had a miscarriage previously and was a bit precious about it all.
My midwife told me the baby would take all the goodness and after all that worry I had.. she is a super healthy, very tall and clever three year old now. I ate whatever I wanted to get through including really manky hot dogs (I'm veggie) and three weeks of just custard slices. And pre natal vitamins first thing in the morning when I felt less sick with whatever drink I fancied, usually something hideously sugary!
I'm still a bit ocd about what she eats to make up from it tho tbf!
