Depends on what kind of induction you're having, balloon or pessary. Don't think they will break your waters until you're dilated enough.

Disneybaby12 · 07/07/2023 19:17

I thought you would only need a pessary if you cervix was closed the midwife who do my sweep on Tuesday said I could easily break your waters if I wanted so I think that’s quite positive

IME you'll go to the induction ward, which is usually a bays of 4 beds. I always started off as an inpatient, so didn't have far to go, and had priority. They'll examine you to see if you need any cervical ripening, then talk through your options if you do, and also if you don't. At 2cm, it sounds like you don't. They'll probably offer a sweep. After that it's a waiting game for them to have capacity and to break your waters. However, once they're broken, you're on a countdown. If contractions start once your waters are broken great. If not, then it's the drip or a C-section.

I was induced at 39 weeks 18 months ago and it was with a pessary rather than a drip.

SwayingInTime · 07/07/2023 20:47

You might be able to wait at home for the waters breaking if you don’t need any cervical ripening - worth asking

SarahLHs · 07/07/2023 20:49

I was 3cm dilated when I went in for induction. Went in at 10:30am. Was checked over an hour later and confirmed that I was dilated enough to go straight to breaking the water and then just waited around for there to be a room free on the delivery suite.

Was called down at 7pm, waters broken just after 8 and baby came 2 hours later.

Good luck!

Hi Op

I was induced at 40 weeks but had 3 sweeps from 39 weeks. I also got to 2cm from the sweeps alone, just had 0 contractions which for me meant I could go straight to having my waters broken on the delivery suite and didn’t need rods, balloon or pessary. Having my waters broken was enough to trigger contractions so I also avoided the drip and baby was born 8 hours after waters were broken.

best of luck!

Disneybaby12 · 07/07/2023 21:21

@Cdoc thank you im hoping for the same when my waters have leaked with my other baby’s iv always started contracting and it was pretty fast from there fingers crossed, the way I feel tonight with back cramping I may go on my own before Sunday

@Disneybaby12 fingers crossed for you! First baby and I was so nervous about needing the drip. I did find that contractions were quite intense after waters were broken (lasted around 90 seconds with short gaps in between of 15-20 seconds) so I opted for an epidural after 4 hours. Best decision!

Keep us updated 🩷

youwerentthere · 07/07/2023 21:33

You hang around the hospital for 4 days, nothing happens and they give you an emergency section.

If you're me that is

Nell80 · 07/07/2023 22:22

I was induced at 39 weeks. As previous posters have said every situation is different.

I had gel pessaries X 2, waters then broke on their own. Went straight over to delivery suite. Got the epidural and then they started the drip. Took a few hours for the drip to bring contractions up to where they needed to be. Then was told to push. Baby was out within half an hour after that.

Best of luck - induction can isn't always an endless nightmare! Let us know how it goes x

chezpopbang · 07/07/2023 22:31

I always thought they started with the pessary but if that doesn't get things moving, break your waters and a drip. Well that's what they did with me

annlee3817 · 08/07/2023 00:30

For me they started with the pessary early hours of Wednesday morning, as I was only 1cm dilated, I went to 2cm on that and contracted for 12 hours, then they removed the pessary and it all just stopped. Unfortunately due to staff shortages I waited until the Sunday to have my waters broken, once they did that they put me straight on the drip, wasn't given an option of not having it and DD arrived five hours later, no further interventions, but not the best experience and a total contrast to DD1 who arrived speedily and calmly on the midwife led unit at 40+5.

TwoWaits · 08/07/2023 00:34

Spent a day in the hospital waiting to be taken in to break my waters but it kept getting pushed back. Eventually got them broken but I’d had a hind water leak for over 24hrs by that point. Baby was in distress. Eventually oo an emergency section

pimplebum · 08/07/2023 12:38

Nurse stuck something up my fanny
Sent me home
Started labour 12 hours later
Ask for epidural as soon as you're in admitted

Disneybaby12 · 08/07/2023 17:01

I don’t want an epidural want to be mobile

OP posts:
Cdoc · 08/07/2023 17:10

@Disneybaby12 check with your hospital, mine offer a ‘mobile epidural’ which meant I could still feel my legs and feel the contractions (just a lot less painful than they would have been without!). It did mean I couldn’t feel them stitching me up after though which was ideal!

pambeeslyhalpert2 · 08/07/2023 17:14

I was induced at 39 weeks, I was in a room on my own. Pessary first and when that didn't do anything they tried the balloon which they couldn't get in so then I had a c section. Good luck x

Disneybaby12 · 08/07/2023 17:36

@Cdoc oh that sounds good not heard of that I will be asking my options when I’m in there tomorrow iv only ever had gas and air had an epidural and drip with my first baby and he is lucky to be alive has a lot of disability down to labour and birth so that’s why i don’t want that again

OP posts:
Disneybaby12 · 08/07/2023 17:38

@pambeeslyhalpert2 thank you I had been offered a section 3 times which I have turned down I’d like to have her naturally first

Here in solidarity with you! Im due my second induction on Tuesday where ill be 39+2. I had a a really positive induction with my first born, only needed one pessary, had the pessary at 12pm and then started contracting about 12 hours later at midnight and then she was born at 4am absolutely perfect. I was 41 weeks with her though so think I was abit more ready! Im hoping I have a good experience this time with it being my second fingers crossed

Let us know how you get on! I feel crampy today and lots of tightenings hoping to go naturally but thats wishful thinking

Disneybaby12 · 08/07/2023 18:50

@Cindy974 That sounds ideal hope it goes the same for you I’ve always gone over with mine but went on my own before induction date so this is the first time my last was 9lb 11oz and got stuck so trying to avoid that I will update tomorrow on what happens 😊

I was induced at 39 weeks two months ago. I was also 2cm dilated when I had a sweep (which also seemed to do nothing). I had my waters broken at 3pm, went into labour quickly and baby was born at 6:25pm. Recorded as an hour and a half active labour and 28 mins pushing, no time for pain relief! Was intense but a fab birth and I was in the shower within half an hour of having him. A far far better experience than being induced at 37 weeks with pessary. I think baby was just ready to come and that 2cm made a difference. Hopefully you'll have the same experience. Good luck!

Disneybaby12 · 08/07/2023 20:08

@devonmum8 oh wow I’m praying for that to happen to me I do feel baby is definitely ready to come out fingers crossed it is my 4th baby aswell
