Hey, is anyone taking progesterone whilst pregnant? I've had 3 miscarriages so was prescribed to take from my positive test, which was today. Just wondering if anyone has any experience - are there some effects, did it work, did it not work?

I am currently taking it, also due to RPL. It’s still early days so I can’t say what the full outcome is. Though we did see a heartbeat the other day which is more positive than my last 3 pregnancies.
Its very messy when it comes out, constantly feel like I’ve wet myself.

BudgetBuster · 28/06/2023 09:46

How far along are you now @Nemo145

Yes! 5 MCs last year all before 7 weeks. I started taking 800mg of cyclogest per day from first faint positive at 8DPO, alongside 150mg of aspirin. I stopped at 16 weeks and now 23 weeks with a baby boy. Congratulations on your positive. I ended up taking mine 'the back' way, which was a lot easier and I had spotting as it irritated my cervix taking them vaginally. wishing you all the best.

Laurabeee · 28/06/2023 11:20

I took progesterone after 3 miscarriages. Didn’t cause me any problems and now I am 29 weeks. I don’t know if it helped but it made me feel better! It was cyclogest but I can’t remember the dose. I took it 4-12 weeks because I didn’t have any bleeding. If I had bleeding it would have been until 16 weeks. I think it may make your breasts a bit sore but they might be sore anyway!

LavenderSweetPea · 28/06/2023 11:22

I'm also taking progeterone. Only 7+2 so can't say one way or the other how things are going to go. I agree with Nemo that they are messy - I have found the best thing to do is to do one once you get into bed for the night (give it more time to absorb I guess) and I try to wake up 30 minutes before I have to get up, put one straight in then give it the 30 minutes then get in the shower. This generally means I avoid the 'wet myself' feeling which is the alternative, and was making me constantly panic that I was bleeding.

I'll probably switch to using them the back way once I've had my midwife booking in appointment to check that that's going to be ok, as it is far less messy - I've heard they aren't as effective when not used vaginally but that may not be true which is why I'm choosing to wait to get their advice first.

BudgetBuster · 28/06/2023 11:59

Thanks everyone. I've just popped my prescription into the pharmacy, mine is a 12 week script so til week 16 I guess and 400mg. I am booked in for a scan at 6 weeks also! Hopefully even just taking them will put my mind at ease that I'm being proactive anyway.

I’ve been on cyclogest twice a day since week 4 - now (11+4) after 3x consecutive miscarriages . I’ve had 3x healthy scans so far with the most recent at 11+1 and It’s the longest I’ve been pregnant so far (except with my 4 year old) so hoping it works. Although a few weeks ago I could only manage doing it once at night instead of twice in the morning and evening as I’ve had a bad tummy since 5 weeks and I felt really disgusting taking it! I’m meant to stop it this Saturday at 12 weeks but I have 30+ pessaries left !

BudgetBuster · 28/06/2023 15:24

Oh congratulations @TTCxox Great to hear your progress story. I've had 3 miscarriages and one termination in all, so really hoping for a positive outcome this time. I just collected my prescription and nearly choked at the price though! 😂

TTCxox · 28/06/2023 15:33

@BudgetBuster do you have your pregnancy medical exemption certificate? You won’t need to pay for your prescriptions!

BudgetBuster · 28/06/2023 15:43

I'm not in the UK, I'm in Ireland so appointments are free but not medication.

ES1986 · 28/06/2023 16:19

I had the pessaries as part of IVF. They did their job, but I don’t miss them, and I had to pay for a private prescription too 💷

I was told to stay lying down for half an hour after I’d put them in (obviously easier at night) to help absorption. Remember to use pantyliners though 😕Oh I do not miss them!

Good luck I hope it all goes ok 💐

BudgetBuster · 28/06/2023 16:47

Yes, so I'll start tonight when I go to bed and then I'm usually lying awake for an hour in the morning anyway so I'll do it then too. Will stock up on panty liners. I don't care the mess or the price if they do their job to be honest. I guess I just wanted others opinions so I don't get anxious taking them. They look quite big, do they have a weird sensation? I'm not sure why but in my head I'm anticipating like a bath bomb inside me 😂 @ES1986

OP posts:
LavenderSweetPea · 28/06/2023 16:58

@BudgetBuster are you taking cyclogest it another brand? How big are they? 🤣 When they are in you can't feel that they are in, like a little tampon I guess. It's just when they come out is when you realise they're there.

I used the crinone gel for a bit as well in previous cycles and my gawd that was so much worse

BudgetBuster · 28/06/2023 17:00

Yes, 400mg cyclogest twice daily. Ah they're small compared to a tampon, look like little bullets. I just kind of assumed they'd be the size of a paracetamol or something 😂

Nelbert19 · 28/06/2023 17:24

I’m on cyclogest too - I use one rectally and one vaginally to cover all bases (as prescribed). Very unpleasant!

am currently 5+3 so hoping this one sticks. Have lost 4 in week 5 so have got everything desperately crossed until I hopefully see a heartbeat on the 7 week scan. I don’t think I’ll breathe until then!

LuneDArgent · 28/06/2023 17:30

I am taking Cyclogest as well since week 5 (400g twice per day). I have had 4 miscarriages, and it's the first time I take them. I'm now 11 weeks 4 days and have had 3 scans already and everything looked good for now! My MC all happened between 7 and 10 weeks so I have never been that far, and I had never seen a heartbeat before this pregnancy. I don't know for sure, but I want to think the progesterone is making the difference! I had all the testing for recurrent miscarriage and not reason was found. I hope it will work for you!!

LuneDArgent · 28/06/2023 17:33

@TTCxox it seems we have a very similar history! I'm 11+4 too 😊

TTCxox · 28/06/2023 18:17

@LuneDArgent oh yes exact same dates and number of scans! Really hope the best for all of us 🤞🏼

Nemo145 · 28/06/2023 18:35

@BudgetBuster I’m only 7+4 but I saw the heartbeat which I didn’t in my last 3 losses. My 2nd loss I saw a heartbeat at 8 weeks but lost it a week later so I’m really hoping the progesterone makes the difference as it seems to have for a number of posters on here.

BudgetBuster · 28/06/2023 19:06

Oh when's your next scan? I'm booked in at 6 weeks for a scan but all of my losses have been before 7 weeks so just trying to get through each week now.

rjs12 · 26/12/2023 22:11

Hi just jumping on this thread! How are you getting on original poster? I hope you and baby are doing well!
I’m taking progesterone after 2 miscarriages so I too am looking for positive stories 🤞🏼

Nemo145 · 27/12/2023 09:40

I’m not the original poster but I have had several miscarriages. I’m currently 33+3 after starting progesterone as soon as I got a positive test with this pregnancy.

LavenderSweetPea · 27/12/2023 16:01

@rjs12 not the OP either but I posted in the original thread at 7+2, I'm now 33w so it's worked for me! I'm actually still taking them (diagnosed short cervix so told to continue up to 34w) Honestly can't wait to be done with cyclogest!

soberfabulous · 27/12/2023 16:32

Not the OP either but I had to pop cyclogest up my bum (lovely!) throughout my pregnancy. I had a cervical stitch at 14 weeks and was at very high risk of miscarrying.

My 10 year old DD is sat beside me so it definitely helped. Best of luck!

Whataretheodds · 27/12/2023 16:40

I did. 2 x 200mg twice daily from positive test through to about 14 weeks (after a successful dating scan.

Prescribed after 2 x 1st trimester MCs. I'm currently 35w with no issues.
