Hi everyone,
im 40 and will be 41 when I have the baby (I’m only 6 or 7 weeks so it’s very early days still)
it’s nice to hear from other people who are in their 40s …
can I ask if you had many symptoms in the early weeks? I haven’t really felt much different other than im really tired and getting up in the night for a wee
xx

Same - previous pregnancies I had very sore boobs and felt sick. I'm just unbelievably tired this time.

Ofcourseididthat · 16/06/2023 18:32

43 here and five weeks away from due date!

I am actually fine with it. I can’t change my age, after all!

Gowlett · 16/06/2023 18:35

Gave birth at 44. Pregnancy was fine. It was nerve wracking at times. Especially in the early days. However, I didn’t realise how risky birth would be. The hospital took no chances with us.

Jaystarlight · 16/06/2023 19:08

@Gowlett Hi there can you please tell me more about the risks/precautions that hospital put in place. I was 36 with my second And no measures put in place at all x

No, but Luisa Dillner had a baby at 47 and wrote a column about it. I'm having a baby at 47 | Pregnancy | The Guardian

Just read this. Amazing she fell pregnant at 47! Really enjoyed reading this article ❤️

Gowlett · 16/06/2023 19:23

Jaystarlight, they scanned me a few times past 38 weeks. Found very slightly extra fluid. Booked me for induction. Would not let me go past 40 weeks. Were plain-speaking about the risk of stillbirth related to my age. Said to come in any time I had any concerns, beforehand. Which I did.

EMCS in the end. I was lucky that excellent people were there in the room. I was offered C-Section a couple of times before the failed induction. Looking back I should have gone due that. But everything worked out well, Thank God.

Jomummy1013 · 16/06/2023 19:24

I'm due mid January and I'll be 42 by the time it arrives. Nice to read about others in my boat. I'm a single mum and very worried x

Jaystarlight · 16/06/2023 19:36

@Gowlett thank you. Do you mind me asking what were your risks of Down syndrome? So pleased all was okay x

@Jomummy1013 hi and welcome. You will be fine I believe that. I was a single parent for many years and in some ways preferred it. I have a partner now but he’s very selfish and immature and I feel I parent three kids a lot of the time. X

Jomummy1013 · 16/06/2023 19:41

@Jaystarlight thank you.
I have three children who are 13, 9 and 8 but I share custody with their father, my ex husband. I have two daughters and a son in the middle.
This baby is a different father. Who is not on the scene and does not want another child. He is older than me and his kids are adults! I don't want anything from him either. I am scared but looking forward to my baby.
I'm sorry to hear about your partner. I know exactly what you mean xxx

Jomummy1013 · 16/06/2023 19:43

@Jaystarlight how many weeks are you? When is your little one due? X

Jaystarlight · 16/06/2023 19:44

I had my first at 38 (nearly 39) and have just found out I'm pregnant again at 42. I'll be 43 when baby is due.

You've given me hope. I'm 38 but financially not in a good place to try for my second baby. Hoping to try in. Few years when I'm 40ish, good to hear it is possible!

Silverfoxlady · 16/06/2023 19:49

Hi, I am 43 years old and 8 weeks pregnant. This will be my fifth baby, but there is a large nine year gap between my baby and my youngest child.

This baby was definitely planned (peeing on sticks, planned ‘romantic evening’[not at all romantic], and held breaths every month). I was getting premenopausal symptoms before pregnancy so I was surprised it worked in the end.

I am also a little nervous because of my age and the statistics on the internet, but the midwife said the only difference is that she is recommending a low dose of aspirin because of my age. I wonder if anyone else has had this recommendation?

I am lucky that I have only had mild morning sickness this week, but I am completely and utterly exhausted this time round, and the people at work keep asking me several times if I am ok in the afternoon. I am finding it hard to concentrate. I even fell asleep on the floor of my children’s room whilst packing for a sleepover, what a laugh!

Jomummy1013 · 16/06/2023 19:58

@Silverfoxlady I am taking 150mg of aspirin every day ❤️

My kids are the laziest kids in existence but you never know 😂😂

Congratulations! I had DC2 last year aged 45. The only "extras" I had were the NIPT as the 12 week scan placed me as being higher risk for Downs (NIPT came back as low risk) and I had extra scans to make sure baby was growing at the rate it should. I was offered (& accepted) a test for gestational diabetes but that was purely off my age, I had no symptoms and never developed it. I was also scheduled to be induced a couple of weeks before my due date, but labour started a couple of days before I was due to be induced anyway. The consultant (again, had one purely due to my age) said that had I been 42 they would have let me go full term but at 45 they'd rather not risk it (placenta is often less efficient or something at my age). I was scared too in the early days but I needn't have been. Congratulations and best of luck OP

Gowlett · 16/06/2023 20:25

Jaystarlight, I didn’t have any tests done. I don’t know what the statistics for Down Syndrome are.

Jaystarlight · 16/06/2023 21:03

When did the nausea start? I feel like I've had nothing but tiredness (think I'm 4-5 weeks)

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 16/06/2023 21:12

I know a few but not a lot of mothers of your age OP. Most of them have either conceived naturally or via IVF or sperm donor.

As long as you’re healthy and have good medical care I wouldn’t worry.

There are lots of stories of older mothers before we had great healthcare who got pregnant at your age and older, didn’t have great pregnancy care before birth and they and their babies were fine, so honestly relax!

Your other children should be fine too.

allthingsred · 16/06/2023 21:15

Just had my 4th at 43 with a huge age gap (17 yrs)
Feel like a brand new mum, lots of 2nd guessing myself, lots of anxieties.

I live in a small town so lots of people felt the need to comment on my pregnancy, and in all honesty i felt i had to justify myself ( kind of ruined it for me).
But everytime i look at him i feel a massive swell of love ❤❤
Yes im knackered, but i dont think any different to any other new mum.

Enjoy every second op. It is really a blessing 🙂

airmaxJ · 17/06/2023 00:01

@Jaystarlight yes would get started on the aspirin as soon as .

Nell80 · 17/06/2023 07:09

Jumping on the thread to hear more and hopefully meet some like minded people as I'm also over 40 with a new baby

Jaystarlight · 17/06/2023 07:22

@airmaxJ if you don’t mind me asking, What is the aspirin for? I’m currently extremely nausea’s struggling with swallowing anti sickness meds.
Is everyone here on/were on aspirin? I am not booking in with MW until 8 weeks so not advice x
