Do you need to push baby??

I keep seeing stuff about your body will naturally push baby out when it's ready without needing to push?!!

That's absolutely amazing if that's true!!! I've had to push with body babies but is this true? For example if you was in labour at the end where baby is ready to come out, would your body do its thing?

Mine did. I'd describe it as like vomiting. My body had to get something out abs did it. I remember thinking 'oh, I've got no control over that!'

Didn't mean it didn't hurt.

cannaethink · 08/06/2023 12:46

I didn’t push with my second baby and he came out just fine! I tore horrendously with my first so did all I could do not tear again, which included just ‘breathing’ the baby out. I just had minor scuffs so I was pleased about that!

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 08/06/2023 12:48

I never had to consciously push or decide to push, and there was no line between the first and second stages at all. It was all just one stage in a bit of a blur. But no one told me to push or mentioned it, it just started to happen and then there was a baby!

Babies can be born to women in a coma.

Its a bodily reflex. Yes like sneezing or vomiting.

MargotBamborough · 08/06/2023 12:50

I don't think you need to, no.

I did push mine out but only because she needed to come out quickly and because it was a VBAC I was damned if I was going to fall at the last hurdle and be carted off for a C-section.

But my body would have pushed her out even if I'd just lain there and tried to do nothing, I think.

PinkPlantCase · 08/06/2023 12:54

I maybe pushed a bit at the very end but it was more of adding extra umph to what my body was already doing. On the whole my body did it all.

MintJulia · 08/06/2023 12:57

I was unconscious by the time DS was born. My body was doing its best to push him out but he had a 92 percentile head and I have narrow hips, so it took a little help from the doc.

But yes, a woman's body can in some circumstances deliver without conscious pushing.

PinkPlantCase · 08/06/2023 12:58

I would say though that it’s probably dependent on a woman’s body being given the time to get to that point and the right environment. Not something that every woman is afforded.

It also relies on a healthcare system that trusts women’s bodies to just do it. I have friends who gave birth abroad and they didn’t have much choice but to give birth in stirrups with coached pushing.

Exactly how I described it with my second. The feeling was immense and actually a relief!

My first wasn't so kind to me, she was dragged out eventually by a surgeon. No urge whatsoever 🙄

Exactly this.

Op it's a bit like doing a big shit, you'll know what you need to do. 😆

Pressthespacebar · 08/06/2023 13:02

I’ve had 8 and never had to push, my body just took over, there were times I didn’t want to push but my body did it anyway.

I’ve never understood it when you see people give birth on tv and everyone is yelling “push!” at them, I just assumed they’d had an epidural or something!

Perfect28 · 08/06/2023 13:06

I pushed like mad but my baby needed to come out or he would have died. I found some superhuman strength I swear. If everything is going well then no, you don't need to push. It's the fetal ejection reflex, aren't bodies amazing?!

scrivette · 08/06/2023 13:11

I didn't have to push, my body just seemed to take over and was bearing down without any assistance from me.

bluesky45 · 08/06/2023 13:17

Yes, my body just pushed of its own accord. It hurt like hell though still and was a lot of effort, but I didn't have control over it, I couldn't just stop it. The midwife told me to stop pushing at the start as apparently I wasn't ready yet but my body was doing it whether I wanted it to or not! The same for both babies. One was natural and one was induced.

clouise30 · 08/06/2023 13:19

I had an epidural and my midwife had told me to grab some sleep while the baby came down a bit lower and then she had to wake me as my body was pushing whilst I was fast asleep!

Tafaa · 08/06/2023 13:22

Yes my body just sort of took over at the end, I did give it a bit more 'umph' though as I vividly remember thinking I just absolutely had to get the baby out in that last push lol

daffodilandtulip · 08/06/2023 13:23

I was screeched at repeatedly to push, and treated like a silly little girl because I wasn't doing it right.

CornishGem1975 · 08/06/2023 13:25

Three babies, never managed to push one out despite a lot of trying. 2 x ventouse deliveries, 1 x EMCS.

Season0fTheWitch · 08/06/2023 13:28

My quickest birth happened with very little effort from me. About 20 minutes from the first contraction to her in my arms. It started as period-like cramps, I tried to relax and breathe deeply, in a deep squat with no underwear on. She basically slid down (painful AF) but I didn't have to force push at all. I think the second to last movement I pushed a bit, but I was excited and in pain!

Anissue · 08/06/2023 13:30

What the first reply said - like vomiting. I was trying not to push because I was worried about tearing, my body just pushed her out involuntarily and she shot out.
I was crouching in a birthing pool.

If you lay on your back i’ve been told it’s harder/you might need to actively push.

sherbertyellowteddy · 08/06/2023 13:33

I remember going down to theatre for forceps maybe csection delivery, baby was stuck. the midwife told me not to push, now you cannot not push, your body just takes over. I just remember saying , sorry I can't help it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Saltisford · 08/06/2023 14:01

Well after doing the listening service, I found out that I was fully dilated and apparently had reached the second stage. After being in it for two hours I had an emergency c section and never felt any urge to push at all. I’ve looked it up online and apparently there can be a ‘passive second stage’ where women can go for hours without the urge to push until it kicks in. Has anyone else experienced this?

ShadowPuppets · 08/06/2023 14:13

I tried to push but DD was pulled out with forceps in the end so clearly my body missed the memo on doing it naturally!!

DS was a heavenly ELCS by comparison because I didn't fancy giving myself another prolapse in the process of trying to push...

LittleBlueBrioTrain · 08/06/2023 14:14

I had an epidural and syntocin drip which appeared to be doing nothing, so they kept turning it up. What we didn't realise is that the monitor wasn't picking up any contractions. Baby's heart rate dropped too low and position changes didn't make it come back up, so they examined me and he was practically crowning. I gave two pushes because he needed to come out quickly.
