Do you need to push baby??

I keep seeing stuff about your body will naturally push baby out when it's ready without needing to push?!!

That's absolutely amazing if that's true!!! I've had to push with body babies but is this true? For example if you was in labour at the end where baby is ready to come out, would your body do its thing?

You don't need to push, that's what the contractions are for! Pushing causes all sorts of nasty problems like tears and incontinence and shouldn't be encouraged.

That's interesting you say this!

I guess the midwife's in my first labour made me focus more on breathing and chin on chest for pushing. I guess it makes sense, pushing too much is not healthy!!

But also some people with a epidural etc kind of need to push because they can't feel everhtbing etc.

Can't believe you don't necessarily need to push during labour x

Well after doing the listening service, I found out that I was fully dilated and apparently had reached the second stage. After being in it for two hours I had an emergency c section and never felt any urge to push at all. I’ve looked it up online and apparently there can be a ‘passive second stage’ where women can go for hours without the urge to push until it kicks in. Has anyone else experienced this?

I was fully dilated for over 4hrs and never had a single urge to push.

My body didn't push on its own either.

I was in denial (precipitous labour and pains were in the wrong place, and they never confirmed I was actually in labour, just gave me some diamorphine) when it suddenly changed to mooing time and was trying very hard to hold her in. It's such a weird sensation, the body moving the baby out on its own, that I freaked. I actively pushed on the very last push only because she had to be freed from shoulder dystocia and they needed her out immediately for the oxygen. Still 12 minutes for second stage all in according to my notes😅Now I understand how women in comas can have natural births though!

I had no urge to push. My body just did everything. I had done hypnobirthing, so was just taking slow, deep breaths throughout and my daughter very slowly nudged her way out, a centimeter or even less with each contraction. The midwives all said that it was a beautiful birth, my perineum stretched perfectly and I ended up with no tears, stitches or even a graze!

Mine is 16 now but I do remember having the urge to push but I also remember them telling me to push as baby was getting tired. I remember thinking why I have only been in labour a couple of hours . He is my only one so nothing to compare too.

FernGully43 · 08/06/2023 21:16

I remember at one point the midwife told me to stop pushing and rest but my body was doing it on its own and I couldn't stop. So I just kept pushing and he came out😅
So yeah I think it's a natural reflex

I didn’t have this at all, but had read about it before labour. I ended up with an epidural and hormone drip, maybe that interfered? Three hours of pushing when contracting ended in an EMCS because DD was stuck.

CombatBarbie · 08/06/2023 21:26

I tried to reverse what my body was doing as I had an instant memory of the crowning pain 1st time around..... My body won.

WonderingWanda · 08/06/2023 21:31

Well I pushed for hours first labour and he had to be dragged out with forceps. Second time round I wasn't pushing and I could feel contractions pushing the baby out.

Have a look at hypnobirthing. I didn't think I would be into it, and wasn't into a lot of the affirmation type stuff, but the education piece around the birthing process and what your body will do is absolutely invaluable. It taught me to keep moving, don't lie on my back, and let my body take the lead.

I had a very long labour and hadn't slept in 2 days by the time I was in established labour, so I was sleeping in between contractions. I was waking up to my body pushing (and the pain) - describing it as like vomiting is the perfect description , I've never heard of that before and if is bang on! It was like my body was doing a super intense crunch which lasted about 6 seconds each time.

I got up on my knees and leaned over the back of the bed. I only pushed when the midwife suggested it, saying "if you push with the next contraction, the head will come out" and it did. And next one "push and we'll get the shoulders" so I gave another little push and he came out. I only had a few grazes, no tears.

I would have had a very different birth if it wasn't for hypnobirthing, teaching me how to work with my body and let it do its thing!

Mine did. I'd describe it as like vomiting. My body had to get something out abs did it. I remember thinking 'oh, I've got no control over that!'

Didn't mean it didn't hurt.

Absolutely this that @FisherThem said for me 😅

My body wanted that baby OUT 😂 His head started coming out and the midwife was obviously trying to slow down his exit to give me minimal damage but she kept telling me to “stop pushing and just pant” 😅 I was like “I love that you think I have control over this”…woooosh, out he flew 🙈😅
After 39 hours of labour I should add 🤣

My first two I pushed out. The pain was horrendous and I just wanted it over ASAP. Pushing was a relief and gave me focus. My third was barely painful and my body pretty much pushed him out for me.
