It was just what I felt like (am just under 8 weeks pregnant) but didn't think of fact that it's on a list of foods not to eat. The white bit was hard, but the yolk was runny and delicious. It was a good quality, organic egg though - do you think it'll be ok?

tbh

yes, it almost certainly will be. the risks are TINY.

BUT in any case-the risk here is salmonella. Lion brand eggs (if its from a reputable source) are vaccinated against it.

the only problem might be if its say eggs from your backyard-but see above re TINY risk.

EllieG · 21/02/2008 10:16

You'll be fine. I've eaten a hundred as didn't realise weren't supposed to, and baby is cooking just fine. Sure it's OK, especially if you know where came from.

tbh - I'v eaten pretty much everything you aren't supposed to - I think there is too much scaremongering these days about food and moderation and common sense is needed.

tedmundo · 21/02/2008 10:16

jane7 - you will be fine!

It sounds like it did you good and if you can stomach anything wholesome and tasty like eggs right now then you go for it.

doggiesayswoof · 21/02/2008 10:16

It's on the forbidden list because of the risk of salmonella - the quality and whether it's organic or not makes no difference I'm afraid . It's a small risk (although I can't quote the stats I'm afraid)

I am sure you will be absolutely fine. FWIW I have the odd runny fried egg - only when staying at MIL's because she makes the best fried eggs - and I have not picked up salmonella yet. I'm 27 wks.

doggiesayswoof · 21/02/2008 10:18

What about brie then folks?

fryalot · 21/02/2008 10:18

Do I sense a touch of exasperation there, MMJ?

Jane - it's because of the listeria that may be present in the egg. They give you a long list of things to avoid just in case there is a problem.

Unfortunately, the list changes every couple of months, so they say EAT LOADS OF LIVER, IT'S FULL OF VITAMIN B (or D - can't remember) AND REALLY GOOD FOR YOU then when you're 5 months pg, they say ON NO ACCOUNT EAT LIVER IT WILL KILL YOU BOTH!!! and you're and

Don't worry, I'm sure it will be fine. But you might want to have them hard boiled for the next seven months.

(incidentally, liver won't kill you, I was paraphrasing )

fryalot · 21/02/2008 10:19

salmonella? thought it was listeria

oh well

izzybiz · 21/02/2008 10:41

Lion brand eggs are vaccinated and fine. As is shop bought mayo, mouuses, baked cheesecakes etc.

mumblesmummy · 21/02/2008 10:45

It's terrible but now I'm going to go and munch rubby egg just coz you've mentioned it and made me want it. I've scoffed them all the way through. They're scrumptious.

It's only for risk of food poisoning anyway... have you ever been poisoned by an egg before? I've not. But then I do sniff them after I break them and before I cook them, to check they're fresh.

Jane7 · 21/02/2008 10:46

thank you all so much - i feel much reassured. shall cook my eggs for longer next time - but I was sooo hungry and sooo impatient. No one told me being pregnant would make me so hungry, as well as queasy. Somehow at the same time.

Fillyjonk · 21/02/2008 10:50

oh maybe it is listeria

its SOMETHING anyway and lion brand eggs are fine

eeew at runny eggs though, eeew

Piffle · 21/02/2008 10:52

I've got one strapping 14 yr old, one 5 yr old and a robust 11 mth old who would anecdotally be evidence that you'll be fine

ladytophamhatt · 21/02/2008 10:57

you'll also find that the list of banned food is differnet in each country.

For Eg, IIRC peanut butter is encouraged in USA for its protien(?? or whatever good stuff its got) but banned here because of peanut allergies.

Soft cheese in frnace is fine too I understand.....

lorrycat · 21/02/2008 11:56

I definitely think that although its wise to be careful during pregnancy and make sure that you're preparing and cooking food thoroughly that there should be no problem with eating as normal. I'm quite lucky in that i don't actually like a lot of the foods that are 'banned' such as paté, blue cheese and peanuts. But i have to say that i am partial to soft boiled/poached eggs and medium steak. I've never gotten sick eating them in the past so i don't think eating them in this way will harm my baby.

lollipopmother · 21/02/2008 12:59

I ate a gone off cheesecake two days before I found out I was pregnant, God it made me ill! Nothing I can do about it now though. I thought 'sod it' to the list when I first found out I was pg and ate some Brie, and instantly felt so much guilt that I knew I'd never do it again.

Brie is fine if you cook it by the way.

SydneyB · 21/02/2008 13:11

Ok, I have eaten steak tartare, many runny eggs, brie, parma ham, hollandaise sauce and even an oyster since I found out I was pg. I mean, the risks are tiny and the advice changes all the time. Surely it's much worse to eat loads of processed food and other rubbish? As long as you don't smoke (although THEY have just announced they can't find any links to harm to baby), drink in moderation and generally try and look after yourself, I'm sure it'll be fine. I mean, does anyone know anyone who has actually had any problems as a result of eating a runny egg whilst pregnant?? As someone else has said, in France they encourage you to drink a glass of red every day and eat soft cheese!

KJ11 · 21/02/2008 14:44

can i eat stilton when its been melted into a sauce with cream??!

LazyLinePainterJane · 21/02/2008 14:50

mmmmm could just eat a soft boiled egg now...

lollipopmother · 21/02/2008 14:51

That would mean it was cooked, so I'd say yes you can, but don't take my word for it.

KJ11 · 21/02/2008 14:53

that's what i think!

doingmyheadin · 21/02/2008 15:16

Soft boiled eggs, especially if Lion marked are pretty safe to eat. Most salmonella is found on the shell and will be killed by a few minutes in boiling water. To be quite honest salmonella etc has been found in many foods including chocolate!!! Just be sensible.

doingmyheadin · 21/02/2008 15:45

Saying that I generally find its best to follow the advice even if some of it is a bit over the top as the guilt and worry often outweighs the pleasure! I recently ate some very yummy fried potato and cheese with a soft egg on top whilst abroad, then went outside and stroked a sheep. I couldn't sleep for about 3 days completely convinced I was about to miscarry. If you weren't neurotic before pregnancy you soon will be!!

TrinityRhino · 21/02/2008 15:50

PMSL
