Red specs / dots over skin

Im hoping someone can help me as I’m worried sick. I’m just over 16 weeks pregnant and have just been to the GP because I have noticed loads of tiny red pinprick dots over my body - my arms, legs and tummy. It looks like specs of bloods under the skin, but individual specs not so much a rash. I also have some cherry angiomas but these are slightly different to these as in they are tiny and flat. I thought she was going to say it’s just a pregnancy related thing, but she said she had never seen this before and wanted to check my bloods for liver and kidneys issues and infections. She also googled HELLP whilst I was in the room, so this has frightened the life out of me! I feel well in myself.

Does anyone have these red spots and know what they are ? I’ve attached a picture, but they are so small it’s so hard to get a good picture of them ! But they are like this but over my arms, legs and tummy and even a couple on my face. Thank you !

They're very common, I got loads when I had dd, absolutely nothing to worry about.

Nelly567 · 31/05/2023 19:07

Thank you, that makes me feel better. Were yours flat and under the skin, almost like a tiny freckle of blood? I was absolutely fine until seeing the GP!

I had them too. I had the blood tests but was told it was unlikely to be anything other than one of those pregnancy things. Which is exactly what it was.

Melroses · 31/05/2023 19:10

I had that towards the end of my twin pregnancy and they were much worse after delivery. Mostly chest and palms. Just told 'oh that's interesting' 🤷‍♀️

They did go.

Sapphire387 · 31/05/2023 19:52

I can't see your picture clearly but tbh I have had these for years, no idea what they are, I think some people's skin is just prone to it.

imapterodactyl · 31/05/2023 20:55

I have them. I asked a derm when I went about an unrelated mole and he said it was normal. I have loads now after 2 DC but only on my torso. I hate them but apparently no way to get rid of them. He said age but I chose not to hear that bit.

PensionPuzzle · 31/05/2023 21:00

Just stopping by to see what's said here as I've had these before, during and after pregnancy, I always wondered what they are too! Nobody medical has ever mentioned them when they've seen them, and I've never had a dodgy blood test result (including TORCH screening which came back clear), so I guess they must just be a mechanical thing. Hopefully that helps to reassure a bit 🙂

Nelly567 · 31/05/2023 21:02

Thank you everyone, this does make me feel better. I came out of the appointment in a blind panic and I can’t really find much online or not a picture that looks exactly like mine anyway. She’s sent me a follow up text to ask me to bring in a urine sample also. It was also that she said we will need to closely monitor you and mentioned HELLP and pre eclampsia on top of liver and kidney issues, that I just wasn’t expecting to hear. She said she had never come across this before, so perhaps that’s why she went through all of the above……

I'd mention to your midwife when you next see her (I know it will be a few weeks off yet but it will fly by) as it will be them that takes the lead on any extra monitoring, I think? I'm willing to bet the midwife is much less concerned (from seeing dozens of pregnant ladies per week) and more inclined to simply keep a normal eye on things than your GP was 🙂

Ljhunt · 31/05/2023 23:24

I can’t really see much but I’ve had lots of petechiae all over since getting covid in December 2020, and since being pregnant I definitely have lots more. I think it’s normal

Ljhunt · 31/05/2023 23:25

(I get them mostly on my arms and legs and actually since pregnancy, lots
on my upper chest)

Elttek · 01/06/2023 05:49

Weirdly I had these at the tops of my arms and shoulders last pregnancy, but not noticed any yet this time though I keep wondering if they'll show up!

Nelly567 · 01/06/2023 10:37

Just went for my bloods (6 vials so must be testing for everything!), and urine sample, I’m hoping after reading all the replies nothing will come of it !

I’ve had loads of these since my last child was born in 2020, I’ve never had them checked out but I’ve had tons of blood tests for various things in the mean time (miscarriages) and nothing has been flagged. Also still feel fine so hopefully they’re nothing. Understand your worry, I often have health anxiety and also did much googling! I’m sure they will be nothing x

Canyougivemedirections · 01/06/2023 15:19

I also noticed some of these on my forearms today and I’m about 8 weeks pregnant. I do have cherry angiomas too but they’re mostly on my chest and abdomen. I’m sure it’s perfectly normal and I’m not too concerned.
Keep us updated on your results and try not to worry.

dindot · 01/06/2023 15:51

I'd forgotten about this but I got them when I was pregnant too. Mainly on my chest and arms.

Nelly567 · 01/06/2023 20:26

I should get my results tomorrow so I’ll keep everyone updated. A few more have appeared on my hand now, so strange ! Feeling much more positive now though that it’s just going to be hormonal !

I’ve had these all over my body since I was a child. Never thought anything of them tbh. I’m quite pale so have all sorts of marks all over that show clearly.

Nelly567 · 02/06/2023 17:08

I had my blood test results and they are all normal (a couple of borderline but doctor wasn’t concerned) apart from CRP which was raised at 16. Normal range is below 5. I haven’t had any recent infections that I know of, so I’m unsure if this is related ?! She wants to see me again next week, so anxiety has kicked up again a bit !

OP posts:
PensionPuzzle · 02/06/2023 20:10

I'm no GP but I believe CRP being elevated in pregnancy isn't unusual, did your GP use pregnancy-specific reference values? I'd get in touch with your midwife just to advise, if you can, as incredibly I know my GP and maternity notes didn't cross check at all, I had a UTI but my midwife only knew because I told her!

Nelly567 · 02/06/2023 20:28

Thank you. Yes she said it was still high for pregnancy and kept asking if I was sure I wasn’t ill, or even have a sore throat ?! I was like no and still no ?! She said all it can indicate is that there is some inflammation going on in the body and maybe I don’t know I’m ill?! She will see me again on Wednesday! I’ve left a message with my midwife who works part time so I’m hoping to hear back from her on Monday. Every time I speak to this GP I come away way more stressed with a million more questions. 16 does seem higher than it should be, and I wish I could put it down to a recent cold or something, but I’ve been feeling fine!

OP posts:
Elttek · 02/06/2023 21:20

Lots of things can cause an elevated CRP- even stress and exhaustion and anxiety so try not to worry too much!

OnSusansFloor · 02/06/2023 21:41

OP I'm a midwife. The little specs are totally normal, some people are just prone to them in pregnancy. They'll probably disappear a few weeks after you give birth. A CRP of 16 isn't abnormal in pregnancy. You don't have HELLP!
The problem is that GPs don't have much involvement with antenatal care unless they're particularly interested and seek it out. I saw a GP for one of my routine antenatal checks instead of the midwife, and she asked me what she's supposed to be checking and where to listen to the baby's heartbeat! Not her fault, they just don't get much exposure to pregnancy in their training.

Nelly567 · 02/06/2023 22:54

Thank you everyone!! Honestly makes me feel sooo much better! I’m going to just try and relax and no more googling ! I agree that the GP just probably doesn’t have much involvement with this so I guess just being over cautious - which isn’t a bad thing ! Thanks again xx

Just thought I would update everyone as it’s so annoying when posts aren’t updated ! I had another call from a different GP who said she saw my notes on the screen as original GP wasn’t in today and I had to drop another urine sample off. Apparently first GP had written to gynaecology ?! No idea why! Don’t have any gynaecological issues / infections. Anyway new GP bleeped medical team after she asked me to send in some pictures of dots and told them about the crp and they want to see me in med sdec tomorrow. I’m assuming this is a medical assessment type place - trying not to google! I’m hoping it’s all just pregnancy related like you have all said and they are just being cautious? My midwive still hasn’t got back to me either, I know she’s part time, but I messaged on Thursday so maybe will hear tomorrow x
