Going abroad at 7 weeks pregnant… would you?

We’ve been offered a last minute holiday to visit family (2.5hr flight) but i’ll be around 7 weeks pregnant when (if) we fly. This is my first pregnancy and obviously still in the very early stages where anything could happen. Nobody except my partner knows.

I’m worried i’ll feel sick / generally feel awful. At the moment I feel absolutely fine but aware that will change… what would you do?

I'd go. You're pregnant, not dying:

Personally I am not leaving country during this pregnancy just incase something goes wrong and I need medical help. I am over cautious though, you can fly up to 28 weeks or do I believe with no issues.

Beaniesmumsie · 30/04/2023 20:43

I wouldn’t, but I have a history of miscarriages and the last thing I want is to miscarry in the plane or in a foreign country

Temporaryname158 · 30/04/2023 20:44

I would and I did. And I went to an Asia country with poor healthcare!

ArseMenagerie · 30/04/2023 20:44

id go.

LysHastighed · 30/04/2023 20:47

I booked a flight for 7w and had to miss it as my pregnancy sciatica suddenly got so bad I couldn’t stand or go down the stairs to get into a taxi. Get comprehensive travel insurance.

dreamersdown · 30/04/2023 20:48

I went to NYC at 7 weeks pregnant. Was a bit tired, but that might have been all of the walking!

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 30/04/2023 20:48

On my first pregnancy I didn't travel abroad as I had bleeding early on (all ok).

This pregnancy #2 I had a pre-booked holiday and we went to Portugal when I was between 6 and 7 weeks and we also had a toddler with us. I was absolutely fine, really enjoyed it. Did feel a bit sick in the morning and evening but wasn't actually sick but it wasn't too hot when we went. Did go to bed early a few nights as was tired but we had really busy days x

LysHastighed · 30/04/2023 20:48

You might also want to get a private scan to check the pregnancy is in the uterus if the healthcare isn’t great where you are going.

WooWooWinnie · 30/04/2023 20:49

I’d go. To put it bluntly, if anything happens at that stage you can’t really do anything about it, so you might as well be on holiday. Just my opinion though, I understand that others would rather stay home for the same reason.

Wrongsideofpennines · 30/04/2023 20:53

I wouldnt but only because of experience. I was going to in my first pregnancy at 10 weeks but I had significant bleeding at 9 weeks and we had to cancel. Make sure you have really good travel insurance. And declare absolutely everything. They tried to say my insurance wasn't valid for threatened miscarriage because I hadn't declared I had coccyx pain after an injury 2 years prior. Obviously they were completely unrelated but the insurers still tried their luck and it was more stress we didn't need.

Crustsamongus · 30/04/2023 20:54

Congratulations! In my first pregnancy I flew at around 8 weeks and again at 35 weeks, both times to see my family on the continent. The second time was much more stressful as I had dreadful anxiety about the the baby's movements and part of me was worried I'd have one of those 15 minute labours mid-air! I felt sick throughout that entire pregnancy but it was at its worst at 14 weeks. I'd go for it, you can always fib and say you're still getting over a bout of Covid if you feel really tired. Hope everything goes well!

Pollywoddles · 30/04/2023 20:55

I did and miscarried my first pregnancy while abroad. I did receive excellent medical care (Germany) but travelling home mid loss was fairly horrific.

This is absolutely worst case scenario though, if I had my time again, I’d still go. Staying home wasn’t going to change anything.

marmite2023 · 30/04/2023 20:55

I went skiing off piste in zermatt at 7 weeks. Climbs with skis on back and everything. Going to Antigua in July, Spain in the summer, and Italy twice in September, all while pregnant. Due in November. We love travelling and don’t plan on giving up. But then, we both grew up in households where travelling happened with infants. My BIL was taken camping in a tent in Australia at 3 days old!

Worriedmotheroftwo · 30/04/2023 21:00

Of course I would! And did. I find it bizarre that anyone wouldn't, especially at such an early stage!

endofthelinefinally · 30/04/2023 21:01

It depends where you are going. Check out the law around what care you can have should the worst happen. Women have died in Ireland and American states where it is illegal to interfere with a pregnancy even if the mother's life is in danger. It is important to check the law in several countries at the moment.
Obviously talk to your travel insurers and make sure you pay any premium required.

Maraudingmarauders · 30/04/2023 21:07

I travelled to Denmark at 8 weeks. I had terrible nausea but I'm still glad I went and had a lovely time. It was a good distraction - better than feeling poorly at home.
I phoned my insurers but they said it didn't need to be declared unless a known issue
I'd phone yours to be sure.

MO22 · 01/05/2023 06:53

I travelled to Majorca at 7 weeks. It was my second pregnancy post a miscarriage and I did a lot of googling re the flight as that was what I was most worried about (no idea why, I went insane that first trimester) and actually we had a lovely time, even though I has a bit of spotting whilst out there which was stressful.

I agree with PP, having gone through it, there's not much you can do anyway if things go wrong at that stage, so we didn't want to not do the things we enjoy. Hope you have a lovely time if you go!

Wallywobbles · 01/05/2023 07:04

I flew all the way until 7 months. I don't think flying is particularly risky for pregnancy is it? And depending where you are flying to, unless it's the 3rd world you'll probably get better funded health care.

AppleTree16 · 01/05/2023 07:07

You’ll be fine. We went to Paris when I was 8 weeks. Sorry from not being able to drink all the wine, I was fine.

Mushroo · 01/05/2023 07:24

You’ll be fine. I was on holiday last week at 4 weeks and was a bit scared as obviously the highest risk of miscarriage but it was fine and being away actually took my mind off doom scrolling.

As someone else said, at this stage, even if the worst happens you can’t really do much to change it. Just check access to medical care just in case.

ChateauMargaux · 01/05/2023 07:28

@endofthelinefinally .. Your information about Ireland is out of date, the law was changed in Ireland in December 20th after a referendum repealing the ammendment to the Irish Constitution. The life of the baby no longer takes precidence over critical care for the mother.

Capitulatingpanda · 01/05/2023 07:30

Depends where and I would have a scan first to make sure not an ectopic (having had one previously).

Qilin · 01/05/2023 07:57

I did at 10 weeks. It wasn't planned that way but I got pregnant after booking, after years of failed TTC and a miscarry. It was long haul flight, but no connections. All inc hotel experience, As it happened I was suffering a lot from morning sickness. The only place, oddly, I wasn't struggling was in the actual flights. Rest of the time I did struggle as was being sick most of the day, it was boiling hot, the air on wasn't great, I couldn't keep much food down (was all inc but no real plain type food which was all I could manage) and it was a struggle tbh. It's the only holiday I've ever been in where I'd have happily just come home instead.

It depends how you're feeling, It wasn't great for me but that wasn't just because I was pregnant - it was because the morning sickness was so bad. Without the morning sickness I'd have been perfectly fine.

Lcb123 · 01/05/2023 08:11

I’d make sure you have insurance in case you need medical care abroad, but otherwise I can’t see any reason why not? The travelling itself won’t make any difference.
