Accidentally ate mousse 12 weeks pregnant ??

Hiya

keep posting as I’m a nervous wreck sorry!! First time mum here, currently 12 weeks and have been being extremely cautious about what I eat. Been checking everything on Google and making sure it’s safe etc.

saw my midwife at booking appointment who said stay off Google just follow NHS website as to what you can and can’t eat. I’ve pretty much got that memorised down to a T.

anyway, went for dinner tonight and decided to order dessert - ordered a chocolate mousse. The restaurant is one that gets really busy but not a chain of restaurants.

in light of the midwives advice I didn’t Google it and just enjoyed it. Afterwards I mentioned to a friend what I had and how lovely the food was, and they said mousse isn’t allowed in pregnancy due to the raw eggs… I literally had NO idea that mousse contains raw egg / egg whites… I know it sounds ridiculous but I honestly thought it was just whipped melted chocolate

now I’m over thinking this and really over worrying that I may have caused some damage to baby or myself.

has anyone eaten mousse in pregnancy and been fine or does this seem a cause for concern to speak to GP???

thank you ….

You'll be fine. IME there's a weird thing with pregnancy, where previously perfectly normal friends/colleagues suddenly feel they have to share worst-case scenarios and dire warnings with you, even if these are (like the one about mousse) totally ridiculous! It's horrible that you got such a shock. But it might happen again - and next time, if someone tells you such-and-such is awful during pregnancy, just smile and nod, check it out on the unlikely chance they're right, and then ignore it.

Best of luck wit the rest of your pregnancy.

I misread the title as 'mouse'. That might be a problem but mousse will be fine, your friend is out of date on dietary advice in pregnancy.

So did I and frantically read the post to see how OP ate a mouse. I was thinking it was in some dodgy stir fry.

RichardHeed · 22/04/2023 23:36

I chomped through half a pigs worth of salami and prosciutto during pregnancy before knowing you’re supposed to avoid cured meats. It’ll be reet.

LeavesOnTrees · 22/04/2023 23:36

I'm another one who thought you'd eaten a mouse ! Wasn't sure how that would be possible though.

Lovelyring · 22/04/2023 23:53

You'll be fine like everyone said.

Definitely don't Google. You can find websites to say EVERYTHING should be avoided in pregnancy.

I was pretty lax actually. Figured if French pregnant women eat Brie, why can't I. Mostly just avoided alcohol and pate. I don't regularly eat most of the other banned foods anyway (swordfish anyone?!)

Dont Google it and don’t listen to others on this. I got myself into some panics in my first pregnancy with people telling me I could eat, humours, pineapple, coffee etc etc usually just after I had eaten a huge amount of it!

The NHS advice is clear, just follow that 😀

ThomasinaLivesHere · 23/04/2023 11:40

Like the midwife said just follow nhs guidelines and don’t listen to people or Google. So many people have outdated or just wrong advice.

luckystarg · 23/04/2023 11:43

My best friend is a midwife and mother of two. I am childless. We went for sushi (raw) whilst she was pregnant and I asked about it. She explained all advice is due to risk of sickness / poisoning, if it’s been 12 hours you’re most likely fine anyway. You have to evaluate the risks.

God, yes. I remember a colleage I barely knew haranguing me about eating pineapple. It was the only thing that didn't make me feel ill at breakfast time.

thecatsthecats · 23/04/2023 17:58

Think about it this way:

Toxoplasmosis, Listeria and Salmonella are illnesses that an adult human doesn't want to get REGARDLESS of whether they are pregnant or not. Because they are not nice, and can even (rarely) be fatal.

But millions of people eat things that carry an increased risk every single day without worrying about catching these things.

Yes, there's an advantage to being careful. Yes, you can reduce your risk.

But these food risks are ALWAYS there for ALL adults.

I am far more careful about the things that are less good for a growing baby - excessive caffeine, alcohol, vitamin A, smoke etc.

Mumofthree8 · 23/04/2023 18:06

The risk from raw eggs is salmonella but farmed chickens in the U.K are routinely vaccinated against salmonella so the risk is incredibly low.
also if you did get salmonella there is little to no risk to your unborn baby, you would just get food poisoning which is unpleasant but usually not serious.
read up on listeria that is the one that can actually harm your unborn child.

AnotherVice · 23/04/2023 18:10

Think of it this way OP; the risk is that you get food poisoning and the severe diarrhoea and vomiting causes early labour. Have you ever had severe food poisoning from mousse before? Or eggs? Or ever? You and your baby will be fine.

ThanksItHasPockets · 23/04/2023 20:36

I thought this was going to be about hair mousse Grin

Hopefully you are feeling reassured, OP.

Lcb123 · 23/04/2023 20:38

Gosh please relax. This stress is worse for you than any food. The guidelines for eating in pregnancy are
pretty random in my opinion and vary a lot round the world.

Kvetching · 23/04/2023 20:38

Blimey. Calm down - you’ll be fine.
