Accidentally ate mousse 12 weeks pregnant ??

Hiya

keep posting as I’m a nervous wreck sorry!! First time mum here, currently 12 weeks and have been being extremely cautious about what I eat. Been checking everything on Google and making sure it’s safe etc.

saw my midwife at booking appointment who said stay off Google just follow NHS website as to what you can and can’t eat. I’ve pretty much got that memorised down to a T.

anyway, went for dinner tonight and decided to order dessert - ordered a chocolate mousse. The restaurant is one that gets really busy but not a chain of restaurants.

in light of the midwives advice I didn’t Google it and just enjoyed it. Afterwards I mentioned to a friend what I had and how lovely the food was, and they said mousse isn’t allowed in pregnancy due to the raw eggs… I literally had NO idea that mousse contains raw egg / egg whites… I know it sounds ridiculous but I honestly thought it was just whipped melted chocolate

now I’m over thinking this and really over worrying that I may have caused some damage to baby or myself.

has anyone eaten mousse in pregnancy and been fine or does this seem a cause for concern to speak to GP???

thank you ….

You'll be absolutely fine. Try not to worry.

HippeePrincess · 22/04/2023 22:57

It’s fine and you can eat raw egg no problem as it will be lion stamped

Allhailzoidberg · 22/04/2023 22:58

Absolutely nothing will happen, please calm down.

The risk of raw eggs is salmonella but farmed chickens in the U.K are routinely vaccinated against salmonella so the risk is incredibly low.

You won’t have done any damage to yourself or the baby.

You sound incredibly anxious though, maybe mention this general worry about food to the midwife at your next appointment?

eggboxontop · 22/04/2023 22:58

You can eat raw eggs in england. They will be red lion eggs in a restaurant, nothing to worry about.

The risk of eating things from the 'what to avoid' list is absolutely negligible anyway.

Reallybadidea · 22/04/2023 22:59

I misread the title as 'mouse'. That might be a problem but mousse will be fine, your friend is out of date on dietary advice in pregnancy.

MasterCherry · 22/04/2023 22:59

No cause for concern. Recommendation used to be to avoid raw eggs due to salmonella risk, but hopefully the restaurant was using Lion marked eggs, which are fine as flocks are vaccinated. Read under 'eggs' here: https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/foods-to-avoid/#:~:text=Salmonella%20is%20unlikely%20to%20harm,the%20Laid%20in%20Britain%20scheme.
Even if they weren't, the risk of salmonella is a) small, and b) to you, probably not to the baby. Indeed, all of the risks are pretty small! So try not to feel too anxious.

I read this as 'accidentally ate mouse' so it could be worse.

Ireallyshouldchangemyusername · 22/04/2023 22:59

You are probably fine. Most eggs (unless from local farms which still may be but are not always) have come from vaccinated chickens so likelihood of salmonella is low. Think raw/runny egg is now deemed safe in the UK as long as from farms certified under the vaccination scheme so I wouldn't worry too much.

Plus even if the chickens weren't vaxxed, still low chance of you getting sick. I know, hard to not worry but all is most likely fine.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/04/2023 23:00

Do you typically suffer from anxiety or is it new in pregnancy?

blahblahblah1654 · 22/04/2023 23:00

Raw eggs are fine. They're all Lion marked in the uk

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 22/04/2023 23:00

It's fine. You need to relax or you'll be endlessly stressed for the rest of your pregnancy.

tadpolecity · 22/04/2023 23:00

You will be fine. Relax. Millions of women all over the world eat all manner of things before they even realise they are pregnant. Raw eggs were historically linked with salmonella which gives you sickness / upset stomach etc. But even that is rare now

DelilahBucket · 22/04/2023 23:01

Don't over think it. I had my son when the advice was to not eat a runny yolk and I had a runny yolk in a sandwich every day from about 18 weeks. The chances are everything is fine.

Barleysugar86 · 22/04/2023 23:01

You'll be fine. I ate brie whilst pregnant. And salmon sushi. I know you aren't meant to but I craved it. figure it never made me sick before.

amispeakingintongues · 22/04/2023 23:03

Most eggs in the UK are safe to eat raw as they are Red Lion / British Lion certified.
Which means they have been vaccinated against salmonella so you can technically eat them raw.

I really wouldn't worry about foods this much, stress is not helpful in pregnancy either. And i've (at some stage, occasionally) ate runny eggs, sushi, salami, tinned tuna, wine and probably most foods on the naughty list while pregnant. My son was perfectly healthy and still is. I'm pregnant with my second and ate an Italian BMT from subway a few weeks ago because its the only thing i wanted.

So yeah be mindful but don't stress yourself to this degree!

‘Do you typically suffer from anxiety’

Typical MN response whenever a pregnant person posts about something they ate

RyvitaBrevis · 22/04/2023 23:09

Please don't worry. Most eggs in this country are safe to eat raw because the hens were vaccinated against disease. Eggs stamped with the Lion are safe to eat in pregnancy in dishes such as mousse. Don't look at advice on web pages from other countries like the US because the eggs there are not safe to eat raw. That's why it's best to stick to the NHS web site. NCT advice below is good too:

https://www.nct.org.uk/pregnancy/food-and-nutrition/what-eat-when-pregnant-and-eating-out-quick-guide#:~:text=risk%20of%20salmonella%20.-,Raw%20eggs,made%20with%20Lion%20Code%20eggs.

Even if the egg wasn't from a vaccinated hen, the only harm raw eggs can cause you or your baby is if they make you ill or give food poisoning. Salmonella is extremely rare. You would know if you had it. And the risks to your baby even if you did become ill with salmonella are small; it's not as serious as the risk from listeria (e.g. from pate, uncooked cured meat etc). Have you ever had food poisoning from mousse before? I imagine you haven't!

There's no reason to worry.

eurochick · 22/04/2023 23:10

Most mousse served in U.K. restaurants won't be made with raw egg. They will use cream instead. I know this because I am dairy intolerant and could have one made with egg but not cream! Even if it did contain raw egg the risks in this country are very low, as others have said. Statistically you were probably at more risk of harm on the car journey to the restaurant than eating the dessert.

It’s also a response when someone is obsessively checking something and has been told not to by a HCP and is now worrying unnecessarily.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 22/04/2023 23:15

OP, mousse made with raw egg is specifically mentioned as something you CAN eat on the NHS site. It's fine. Your friend is telling you outdated advice, listen to your midwife.

Youdoyoubabe · 22/04/2023 23:17

And so it begins..... a lifetime of worry. You'll be fine. Just don't follow it up with a fag and a whiskey.

MollyRover · 22/04/2023 23:17

Wouldn't they most likely be using pasteurized egg whites anyway?

Aylestone · 22/04/2023 23:18

Dear lord op, you’ll be fine 😂😂

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 22/04/2023 23:20

Not all mousse have raw eggs in it.

WhatHoMarjorie · 22/04/2023 23:21

I don't think you should phone your GP to tell them you've eaten chocolate mousse, no.

You'll be absolutely fine. The salmonella risks with an egg produced in the UK are miniscule.
