Food aversions...will they go away?

I'm 10w with my second and have extreme food aversions as well as smell aversions. Even the smell of my own house makes me feel sick.

I'm living off toast with jam, strawberries, and apples. That is all I can eat.

Please tell me this will get better? I went off meat when pregnant with my first but it got better by this stage and my appetite wasn't as limited. I'm scared I'll never enjoy food again!!
It is a shame as I've been invited to dinner with friends and I'm having to say no, I don't want this to be forever. DM had aversions to sausage and butter when she was pregnant with me and has never been able to eat them since.

I don't know if anyone believes in wives tales but I am convinced this baby is a boy based on the extremity of the aversions.

Please tell me most people had a normal appetite again at 12w - 16w!

I didn’t fancy anything the first trimester, only dry foods like ready salted crisps and toast (and McDonald’s 🤣) I started to be able to eat more after 14 weeks, I still can’t eat things like mash and gravy though the sight of it makes me feel sick! We stopped going out for dinner too bevause whatever I did manage to eat I’d just come home and be sick 🤣

TheRookie · 13/04/2023 08:33

I still can't stand the smell of cooking beef and my.son is 19 months 🤣

But it definitely does get easier, you're only 10 weeks which is prime symptoms time. I think my appetite and food aversions settled by the time I was 16-17 weeks!

Cheapcookies · 13/04/2023 08:35

I really want a chilli and a takeaway chicken curry. But the thought of it being in front of me or trying to eat it 🤢 maybe I just want to want it

Really pleased to hear you saw improvements in to the second trimester. I am so fed up of eating the same things. Then my husband is whinging about the strawberries because "they aren't even in season" 😒

Mine improved by 16 weeks

log51 · 13/04/2023 11:24

I'm 16 weeks now and mine improved around 12-13! I can pretty much eat anything again now! Like you I was loving strawberries and also anything salty so lots of McDonalds chips tbh.

ChloeN · 13/04/2023 12:14

@Cheapcookies i tried to eat curry or anything with sauce and just couldn’t 🤮 I don’t know what it is, maybe the texture 🤣

Dollmeup · 13/04/2023 12:33

Mine lasted throughout both pregnancies, but went away very quickly afterwards.

Phineyj · 13/04/2023 13:03

That suggests you've got reflux - those are all acidic.

I found Lovehearts and other sherberty things useful for calming this down and taking the taste away.

Skybluepinky · 13/04/2023 13:20

I couldn’t stand the smell of tea, and years later it still makes me heave.

Yourteaisgettingcold · 13/04/2023 13:37

Food aversions lasted till i was about 35 weeks but the aversions changed, it was trial and error based on each day so I just had to go with whatever I fancied at the time. Its been a wild ride!

pumpkinpiee · 13/04/2023 15:42

Mine lasted until about 20 weeks unfortunately, it’s horrible I really sympathise x

SummerBaby23 · 13/04/2023 15:59

I really sympathise too it’s awful. I would sit in my car and cry about the thought of going in my house because I couldn’t stand it. My first pregnancy it didn’t really get better until very near the end but the second pregnancy got better about 20 weeks so I just think it’s very individual. Avoid what you can’t stand if you can and don’t worry about minimal diet. I was so averse to everything in my first pregnancy I took no vitamins, and only ate cheerio, haribo and salt and vinegar crisps and my toddler is absolute fine (and eats everything herself).

Be kind to yourself and I hope it passes soon!

annlee3817 · 13/04/2023 23:15

I couldn't even look at chocolate without wanting to be sick until around 16 weeks, slowly was able to eat it again, lived on the high fibre Jacobs cream crackers as that was the only thing I could really stomach when the nausea was at its worse. It did get better though. First time with DD1 I had an aversion to pasta and that continued for around a year after she was born.

Cheapcookies · 13/04/2023 23:28

God I hope I get my appetite back around 16 weeks like most others and that I don't hate certain foods forever....I love food!! 🤣 I did manage some baked beans today which was like a gourmet meal.

For me, Pepsi Max and coffee. This disappeared within hours of having both DC.

SpringTime2023 · 14/04/2023 05:24

I couldn't stand chicken (was always my go to meat) during first trimester. I remember ordering a Nandos but being sad that I simply could not enjoy it! I started feeling better around 16/17 weeks but the aversion took a while to completely pass - probably until 22/23 weeks maybe? Had lingering nausea in the evening for ages which played into that maybe (no where near as bad as 10 weeks though).

Groutyonehereagain · 14/04/2023 05:34

I couldn’t stand the sight and smell of used dinner plates. That’s never quite gone away.

Florin · 14/04/2023 05:45

I went instantly vegetarian when I first discovered I was pregnant, just the idea of meat made me want to throw up and I am a big meat eater. Dh even tried putting little bits of chicken in pesto pasta but I couldn’t manage to even try and chew it. When I was 20 weeks we went away to the Caribbean and the first night we went out to dinner and I ordered a massive plate of ribs while my family looked at me in disbelief as I ate the lot. I was fine from then in with meat. The other weird thing is I had a huge want for those little syrup steam puddings you microwave, never eaten one before pregnancy but ate a truck load through my pregnancy but as soon as I gave birth had no want for one and haven’t eaten one since.

Baker18 · 14/04/2023 08:43

Mine were really bad in the first trimester, there was basically nothing I wanted to eat except crackers and cheese. I'm nearly 26 weeks now and they definitely improved 14 weeks onwards but still not totally gone. I had aversion to water which has 90% gone now thank goodness, just still find it easier to drink if very cold! Still don't really want any meat or vegetables. I think some of it is in my head though as I can still eat things if they're put in front of me... it's just the thought of them initially that turns my stomach or with meat sometimes it's just the raw meat and cooking it. Definitely most evenings though I spend ages not able to decide what to eat because I just don't fancy anything. Hope it goes back to normal after birth!

Mushroomofficeglass · 14/04/2023 08:48

I had sickness throughout the whole of my pregnancy and had aversions to the smell of KFC (had ho drive past on way to work). Had food aversions to cereal, tea, cous cous, beef and many more. Mine are teenagers now and food

Mushroomofficeglass · 14/04/2023 08:49

Is not a problem except I can't eat cereal or cous cous. Everything else I could eat straight away.

IHeartGeneHunt · 14/04/2023 08:53

Until 20 ish weeks I couldn't eat anything except Weetabix, Asda plain ham sandwiches (made me sick if I touched the ham to make my own sandwiches!) apples and cheese Wotsits. It did get better!

Glitterb · 14/04/2023 08:54

I’m nearly 12 weeks and my food aversions are still going strong! I will really fancy something and then realise I actually cannot stand it anymore 😆 toast is my favourite thing currently and weirdly enough granny smith apples! I do have horrendous acid which is putting me off food as I feel sick a lot. The smell of bleach is vile to me as well as is a cup of tea and chocolate (two of my favourite things previously!)

Augustone · 14/04/2023 08:58

I developed an aversion to pork chops and roast pork. The smell and thought of them made me feel so sick and the thought of the texture in my mouth....

Still the same 22 years on and haven't touched either of them since
