Not coping very well with morning sickness. Any advice?

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and really struggling with this morning sickness. I didn't get it at all in my last pregnancy so I have no idea what is normal or not but for the last 3 weeks I have felt debilitatingly sick 24/7. There is no break from it. I feel worse when I'm hungry but as soon as I take a few mouthfuls of food I feel really nauseous again. Night times are the worst as I wake up feeling really sick and can't get back to sleep. Even drinking makes me feel awful. But I don't actually vomit that much, maybe 4 times a week or something. It's just the non stop feeling really sick and dizzy that's making me miserable.
Is it normal to feel like this?
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to help?
The thought of being like this for another 6 or 7 weeks is making me want to cry.

If it's that bad then speak to your GP but ultimately do whatever you need to do to get through these next few weeks.

I found full fat coke and general junk food a godsend during my first trimester of my first pregnancy, nothing else worked - my point being that sometimes you just have to use whatever you can to get through.

Is there anything that helps you feel better? Are you able to sleep during the day?

heartbroken22 · 12/04/2023 03:37

Can u go boots tomorrow or a chemist and get anti sickness like cyclizine? Also get a doctors appointment and maybe they're prescribe it

How often u being sick? It could be the start of hypermesis gravidarum or HG. There's a thread for people who have it in the pregnancy section...

Keep having small bites regularly and don't let yourself get too hungry...eat what u crave and don't worry...hope u feel bettter soon...

Beetrootz · 12/04/2023 03:48

I'm not actually sick that often. Maybe once a day or once every 2 days but the nausea is horrendous I think. Its honestly all day and all night long without stopping. But I wasn't sure if this is normal as I tried talking to my mum about it and she said everyone feels sick and to just get on with it.
I'm awake right now as the nausea is so bad I can't sleep.

I didn't say in my OP but I have to be careful with what I eat and drink as I suffer from chronic migraines and as I am no longer allowed to take my usual medication for migraines I have to be careful not to trigger them. So can't eat any junk foods or anything with refined sugar or caffeine.

At the moment all I can manage to eat is some toast and sip water throughout the day.

I was like this from 2 or 3 months to 7 months, only sick in the morning but they did give me meds, quite strong ones in the end that they don't give in first trimester but there will be other ones you can try now. I was struggling to eat mostly only managing potato, cookies, black tea, caffeine free coke, mango juice randomly, it was amazing once they gave me the meds and I could eat cereal and meat again. There is a scale here, you can see the nausea does count. yourhealthrotherham.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/PUQE-INDEX-ASSESSMENT-new.pdf
Hope this passes soon, it really does make things tricky.
On the plus side once born my baby was almost never sick!

LadyJ2023 · 12/04/2023 05:28

4 kids and sickness with every one for the whole 9 months never felt so ill. Literally only stopped the days I gave birth

eggboxontop · 12/04/2023 06:53

I think you can still get anti-sickness medication for nausea without being sick.

If you want to try a more natural approach first then try taking an extra B6 supplement as there's a link between low B6 and morning sickness.

Try chewing on actual ginger, sorry I know that sounds like the opposite of help but it's worth a try. If you can't hack that then brew up your own ginger tea with real ginger in a saucepan.

Peppermint tea can help some people too.

Can you stomach fresh fruit?

Beetrootz · 12/04/2023 07:05

I can manage some fruit yes but only in really small amounts. I'm just so miserable as there is no break from constantly feeling sick or heaving and I have to manage working and caring for DS. I might phone the GP and see if they can prescribe anything.

DottyDry · 12/04/2023 07:34

I found it helped to eat little and often even if you feel you can't really face it, just to stave off the sickness. I can remember heaving while eating, but it was the only thing that eased it!

I remember if I didn't eat something pretty much as soon as I woke up, I was nauseous for the rest of the day. I think if I left too long between eating it triggered sickness.

Good luck and hope it passes soon

heartbroken22 · 12/04/2023 09:59

Minty chewing gum helped the nausea too. I chewed like mad.

TheIsleOfTheLost · 12/04/2023 10:59

You can absolutely get the gp to prescribe something. There are a few things they can try too, so if one doesn't work you can ask again. It took me three medications to get one that helped in my second pregnancy. The first I got through miserably as I didn't realise that the doctor could help, but by the second pregnancy I had a toddler to look after too.

Hazelnuttella · 12/04/2023 11:03

Rennie / antacids helped me feel a bit better.

Beetrootz · 12/04/2023 11:35

Hi everyone. I phoned the GP this morning and she prescribed Cyclizine so I'm hopeful it'll work and I can feel functional again.

Hi.
Feeling for you. I was really nauseous and only sick once a day roughly until I was 4 months pregnant. In bed pretty much the whole time with a bucket.

I didn't want any meds for it ideally.

What helped varied. Eating some baguette dipped in balsamic vinegar at one point.
Pot noodles were manageable for a spell too. Tiny sips of water all day.
Being tired made it much worse I remember that.

I hope it passes quicker for you. Feel better.

Beetrootz · 12/04/2023 18:34

Thanks for sharing your experience. I've taken my first tablet about 1 and a half hours ago but so far I still feel just as sick.

I'm just feeling really down as its so miserable feeling like this all the time with no break.

I hope it'll eventually pass at the end of the first trimester. I dont know what I'll do if it continues past that.

technotstarnotechstar · 12/04/2023 18:48

Sorry you are dealing with this. Its awful. It sounds completely counter intuitive but don't let yourself have an empty stomach, even if you don't feel hungry try to eat some toast or crisps or biscuits. An empty tummy seems to make the sick feeling urge to throw up stronger.

Rachaelrachael · 12/04/2023 18:54

Try not to let your stomach get empty. I used to keep a pack of ginger biscuits on my bedside table and nibble through the night and the minute I woke up. Also some people swear by the travel sickness bands you can wear on your wrist for morning sickness. Hope it passes for you soon!

ilovemydog123 · 12/04/2023 19:12

Ginger biscuits and if you not keen on them I use to have butter on them

Beetrootz · 12/04/2023 19:15

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Having something by my bed for when I wake up is a good idea. I have to be careful what I eat so I don't trigger a migraine but some crackers should be fine. I've not heard of the bands you can get, I will look into it.

Congratulations by the way! It will all be worth it 😊

BritishDesiGirl · 12/04/2023 19:39

@Beetrootz

Mine lasted until 14 weeks. A few things whi h l found helpful, lemons!! Lemonade with squeezed lemon, boiled sweets such as humbugs and soft mints. Anything with salt and vinegar, snack a jacks. Sour sweets.

I also would try sipping on lucozade which helped me.

If things are that bad don't suffer silently.

mauveiscurious · 12/04/2023 22:32

I was very nauseous but I was advised to keep eating as it helped

shadowchancesassy · 12/04/2023 22:41

Have you tried the travel bands? I swore by them. My daughters 14 weeks and suffered awfully with nausea so I told her to get some and she's been wearing them for the last 7 weeks and touchwood she's been fine (well apart from the tiredness)

Tomicca · 12/04/2023 23:00

I have been like you op since 6 weeks and I am now on week 21😩it’s bloody tough sick once a day but bad nausea. The nausea is a bit better than it was in the beginning though. I find chewing gum constantly helps, also oranges even if it’s just one segment at a time the juiciness helped my mouth feel less dry. Now I can eat a whole one but at your stage it was a tiny bit at a time. I got cyclizine which didn’t make a massive difference. I take omeprazole for heartburn and I feel they have helped with the sickness a wee bit.
Babybels are good for me as they are small. I really do sympathise it’s very debilitating.

Campervangirl · 12/04/2023 23:07

A packet of ginger nut biscuits by my bed and I'd eat a couple before I got up in the morning worked for me, I was nauseous throughout my pregnancy but it was 35 yrs ago and you were expected to just get through it, I'm glad the GP has prescribed something for you

Cappuccino17 · 13/04/2023 01:13

I was nauseous in both pregnancies but 1st pregnancy was worse. I think it's because it was hot summer weather alongside.
I ate a lot of tip tops that helped ,anything really sour and salty, fizzy soda but in the second pregnancy I drank sparkling water as it still helped but healthier and penny sweets like fizzy cola bottles. Sounds unhealthy but what can you do! Weirdly as soon as the 2nd trimester literally the day all my symptoms went in a flash it was true! The symptoms disappear like i had read. So it was a huge relief to feel normal again honestly. I hope it gets better for you too, the first trimester was the hardest for me in both pregnancies.
